So I'm going through something now ,thats taking up way too much of my time.
I had a set of twin calves born here late in the calving season...The first one popped out no problem, and the mother bonded to it quickly.
A few hours later, she was struggling and I had to help her birth a second calf.
This massive little girl took hours to come into this world....And the cow ignored her, and wouldn't bond.
So after watching this go on, and watching the calf get weaker and going downhill in a hurry, I tried get her to latch onto one of her nipples.
She won't do it for anything. She'll sit there and not suck or nurse with it in her mouth.
So I decided to bottle feed her..Well holy shit, she got stronger and now will only feed from a bottle I give her.....Which pisses me off because I need to feed her every 4 hours.
So for over a week, she runs to me from the trees, and sucks that fake boob dry in under 5 minutes....Even at 3 AM. I know she has bonded to me.
I've tried every day to get her to latch on to her natural mother, who she hangs out with, but she will not do it. I know this may go on for months!!
I figured you all could have some fun with this .....So.....What could I do to make her suck on that boob, so I can finally get a good nights sleep?

Have you ever had this happen before

you need to sell her to some one who will be willing to raise her as a family extention.

I've intervened before, but after a few days they will latch on and nurse from the mother.
Unless the Mother rejects it for some reason......That hasn't happened here.
The little calf will just sit there when I place the nipple in her mouth and not nurse.....But goes to town when I present her the bottle.

Can you try to get another cow to adopt her as her own? If not, how long before she can be weaned? Can you set up some kind of contraption to hold the bottle so she doesn't associate feeding with you?

I have just set up a bottle holder on the fence. The only way you can get another cow to adopt her isn't very pleasant.....It's called grafting. If another cow has twins and one dies, you place the skin of the dead calf onto the one thats lived from another cow. This mother cow hasn't rejected her, she just won't nurse from her...the problem is with the calf.
I don't call a vet for advice very often.......I have 390 other calves to look after as well.

She freakin' sucked for about a half minute, then she gave up, and head butted me right in the balls........But it worked for a few seconds.
I'll keep trying...Your a pretty smart Dude.
The large breasted cowgirl idea is good in theory....But I won't get any work done, or God Willing, I won't get any sleep....I could use a good nut massage right now.

Well...I figure she doesn't like a tick-tack sized nipple loaded with milk and honey, and prefers a inch and a half one you could hang a skeleton key from, thats stuck on an end of a bottle......I think she's just lazy ,and the mothers nipple is too small for her liking. Which is something this guy does not have a problem with.

I assume that I'll be bottle feeding her till she's weaned........Damn.!
Next thing you know you all here will have me name her.....Her tag reads #393, and she's not moving into the house with me.
Oh....And had another set of twins today.....Had to help the first one out, but the mother bonded right off ,and they nursed as soon as they got their footing.
This sleep deprived Cowboy is thankful for that.

^ I don't know....We could screw my hat down tight, and give it a cowboy try.

O.K....So I walked out my door and yelled "Smartie" out to the calving pen....She answered back and ran to the fence.

Thaaaaat's just great !! Now I have to keep her for sure...I gotta stop hanging around here.

I remeber when my kid sister mixed up the sex of her hamsters. And POOF. Man there were so many hamsters. IT HAPPENED A FEW TIMES TOO !!my father wasn't big on pets and didn't even know one hamster existed in the home never mind dozens. It's was eye drop feedings every hour, all night long and then I think my mom did it during school hours. BAby hamsters need to be seperated from their morhers as some mommy hamsters will eat their bsbies. Those little ones attatched to my sister as well and would run to her as soon as she got up and walked towards to cage. It was cute.

The look on my fathers face when he walked in on us one day to yell at us about something -- and got wind of the hamster mill!

I'm very maternal naturally so if there's a baby creature of some kind that needs a feeding or something Id get up and do it no problem. It's a good thing the calf lives with you and no where near me, as it would have probsbly made it way into my bed already at night and be roaming around the house during the day.

Could you rub a bit of honey on the fake boob and if it likes it rub some on the cows boob it may switch her over?
Grew up on a ranch that raised race horses (TBs) and also had cattle. Honey isn't metabolized well by cows but molasses is and has same potential to work (seen it work). Corn syrup can also be tried. Cows, unlike horses, don't have a "sweet" sensory response or craving but they do like sticky for some reason. Sometimes the real thing just won't work too and hand feeding may be a reality for you - spent many an hour as a youth bottle feeding both horses and other critters that simply didn't take well to a natural nipple.

That just about sums it up.....I've accepted my fate for the next long while.
I will admit, I've been raising cattle all my life, and never knew they didn't have a sweet sensory response.
Thanks for that!!...You learn something new every day.

If you can get that big just eating grass, it is probably good they don't have an urge for chocolate too! LOL.

right here and now
Hey Syb, I'm not a rancher, but as kids we lived on a hobby farm and raised a number of calves for 4H.
We would mix up a batch of warm formula in an ice cream pale, lube our hands with the mix, poke our fingers into the calves mouths then draw their faces down into the pail while they sucked away. They would then finish the formula on their own, without our assistance, allowing us to move on to other chores.
Good luck with all your beasts.
