every year guys like Bo Horvat,Curtis Lazar and other draft picks seem to be stuck in a no-man's-land where they're not quite NHL-ready
but have little to gain by another year in Junior.

They are ineligible to play in the AHL unless they are 19 yrs old and have completed 4 yrs of junior(pls correct me if I'm wrong)
However, once their Jr team is eliminated from post-season play, they can join an AHL team.
So,why was Bo Horvat allowed to spend 2 weeks at Utica earlier this season?
For that matter, why are 19 year-olds ineligible to play in the AHL?to "protect" them from older players?if that is the case, why are they
eligible to play in the NHL at 18?the NHL also has older players.
I must be missing something on this, would appreciate enlightenment.

I had the pleasure of meeting Willie Desjardins recently, very pleasant guy, soft-spoken,modest,said "We've been lucky"
re the good start to the season.
Bobby Clarke was quoted "The harder I work, the luckier I get"
The Canucks def. picked a class guy there.

P.K.Subban has obvious skill set, makes some great moves offensively, but can turn routine defensive plays into adventures.
In a recent game vs. Calgary he blew a tire spectacularly, giving the Flames a freebie.
Also,as the Habs were leaving the ice(don't recall which game)P.K. sees it as his duty to stand by the gate and acknowledge each
teammate as they exit.
he then tried to KISS Tokarski who was having none of it,turning away like an awkward end of a 1st date, hilarious.

the Lions massacre is well-documented on another thread, but I think it's safe to say we'll see many new faces in '15,maybe
incl. the coaching staff.
yes, injuries hurt, but they're part of the territory, the best teams have the depth to cope with setbacks, and the Leos did not.

even the best coaches can't prevent stupidity.recently a wide receiver for Buffalo was touchdown-bound,but felt compelled to
begin his hotdogging-high-step at about the 15 yard-line,and was taken down before he could score.
at least he hung on to the ball, unlike the infamous Leon "Big Daddy" Lett in that long-ago Super Bowl.

on the same theme, there was a recent clip of a college game where another WR has open space, races to the end zone
and spikes the ball....on the one yard-line.
while he's making an idiot of himself doing the boogaloo in the end zone, the other team picks up the ball and returns
it 99 yards for a TD.

One can only wish that both those morons had their showboat butts stapled to the bench for the rest of the game.

Stamps look like the team to beat tho' historically they have lost more Western Finals at home than they've won.Yes,that should have
nothing to do with 2014 but still..

Finally, biggest surprise so far in the young NHL season...Canucks,Flames,Isles,Preds,or someone else?

I hope for feedback,comments,argumennts,etc.

disappointed how the Leos went out with a whimper and hardly roaring.
yes, I know our two main guys were out of service, but to be thumped like that
was just god awful. at least I thought our D could have given them a bit of chance
but what a poor performance. shoddy coverage and tackling in the secondary and
I've more pressure urinating than the Leo's front four.

grusse, I'd give Benny one more year. losing Lulay and Harris was a factor but
as far as Khari Jones, I'd give him the slip.

biggest surprise in the NFL for me would be Arizona.
too bad about Palmer going down but they still find a way to win and
could surprise a lot of teams when playoff starts.

I played major junior in Quebec but was not good enough to get drafted though I played for two years in Europe. I remember this was a crap rule then too for the guys that were not learning anything in junior anymore. I went to Europe at 19 and it was great and I became a better hockey player and just more mature in general. Playing against men when you are a man is so much better. Little things I could do to cheat in junior I could no longer do and I was far from the more talented guys as I never scored more than 25 goals in junior so I can imagine for guys like Lazar and Horvat it is very frustrating. You show good insight in your comment.

On the BC Lions. As someone from Montreal, I fail to see any problem with the game yesterday. I thought it was great. :clap2:

There are no surprises in the NHL, as we are less than 20 games in...how can there be surprises, not enough games...the Edmonton Oilers are only 12 points out of first place, and they have a game in hand...

Giancarlo Stanton has reportedly signed a 13 year, $325 million dollar contract...I know he doesn't play for the Canucks, so that is of little interest to anybody here...being a baseball fan myself, I thought I would mention it

does anybody here remember Dick Allen

The CHL develops players for the NHL...there has to be something in it for them, would you not agree...allowing 19 year olds to play in the AHL would have huge financial implications for the CHL...the thinking is, if they are good enough to play in the NHL, fine, let them play in the NHL, if they're not, sent them back to Junior, can't be all about the Canucks

As the others mentioned, they don't allow 18 year old in the AHL, not to protect them from the older players.
But for the benefit of Jr hockey. Horvat and Lazar are more extreme examples. But I am sure every NHL team would prefer to have all their 18 year olds on the AHL team instead of a Jr team.
That takes 100-150 of the best junior hockey players away. Then its "why can't 17 year olds play in the AHL if they earn a spot?"

Ripping his team. Instead of worrying about his own play.

All of the sports books I have read and what they say about teams.

The most important thing they say is the locker room. Respect for your teammates, you play for them as much as you play for yourself and the fans.
The best teams, are those that are close. They hang together off the field or ice or whatever.
It what has been said over and over again.

off field:
classy gesture by the NO Saints organization giving a devoted Bengals fan
a souvenir football after a Saint's fan stole it from her.

you also see it in other sports like hockey and baseball where the intended
recipient of a souvenir gets thwarted by over zealous individuals.

such as the couple in an MLB game snatching a souvenir foul ball away from a boy
who couldn't be more than 8 yrs old. then proceeds to take selfies of themselves
while the boy was in tears. in the end, I think the boy got a souvenir ball after all,
from one of the club.

thx for the comments,beginner

re surprises...I did say "so far in the young NHL season" as we're just approaching the quarter pole.I certainly didn't intend for anyone to think I was making a prediction.
by the time the reg. sched. is over the teams I cited might be buried deeper then Jimmy Hoffa, but, for now, their fans can smile.

Giancarlo Stanton gets multi years and $ that exceeds the GNP of some countries.I hope he's recovered from the HBP that ended his 2014 season(or did he come back
for the last few games?can't recall)

I believe you refer to Dick "don't call me Richie" Allen, talented, but troubled, ballplayer from the 60's&70's?before my time but my favorite uncle told me
about him,fabulous talent&take-no-shit attitude.

good informative points raised re CHL&AHL and draft picks.

my understanding is that when a CHL player is taken in the draft, the NHL team that chose him makes a payment to his CHL team so there's some compensation there.

I don't have the #'s, so this is admittedly speculative but I think most of the CHL players drafted are done so with the almost certainty that they will be returning to
their CHL team for at least one more season.
So,it wouldn't be a large # that fall into the grey area like Horvat I wouldn't think..

thx for the injury-exemption explanation,Badger, that one had me puzzled.

I had thought that,if a draft choice played 10 games with the NHL team that picked him,he had to stay with them for the entire season, but I read something
last week about he could still be sent back to Jr.,just that he'd be paid his NHL salary.correct me if I got that one wrong, anyone.

Zero respect for Pasquale Buono...Pasquale is dumb like a fox, not a Benevides fan, but Pasquale is just covering his overrated Italian butt, I say overrated, because, although he has won 5 Grey Cups, he probably, with the teams he has had, won 10. Ask Corey Chamblin what it is like to lose your starting quarterback. Pasquale should have been the one pitch forked out of here. God I miss Bob Ackles, forget about Pasquale.

agree that Buono's teams should have at least appeared in more Grey Cups.

between Calgary&B.C. he had about 7 teams that finished 1st,but lost Western Finals at home.

not sure how being Italian fits into the analysis, lol.

re the AHL and jr players.....got it from a sportswriter(one of Badger's "favorites",lol)that a guy is eligible if he's 20 yrs old on Dec.31
