It's been my experience that people are drawn to this lifestyle, at least for a short time.
After a few weeks of no phones and running out of food they seem to be drawn back to civilization. If they are still here when the real cold hits,....that usually forces them south.

The work here never does seem to end. In spring you spread fertilizer and set out irrigation pipe, then turn out the stock into the mountains. By summer your riding the high country, and making 450 ton of hay. Fall ,you ship the finished calves ,and cull out the old stock.Winter is a little slower ,with just fixing equipment, feeding hay out and keeping the wood stove going.
Then spring rolls through again and it's calving season, then branding.......Anybody could do it.

You know...come to think of it....I'm real short handed around here come haying season Ladies.
I'm also looking for a lady that'll help me with fencing....She gotta know how to swing a hammer and drive nails into rails...wearing Daisy Dukes and a tank top...It's cowboy wages, but the Moonshine is free.

Sounds like paradise to me, wouldn't mind to go off the grid in the summer. My family has one farm left in Saskatchewan, I've always wanted to go and visit it some day. Alas I bet I couldn't exactly get up whenever I wanted on a ranch as I'm sure there's lots of work. Oh well, a girl can dream :p
What you need is an obedient sub to accompany you to tuck you in at night and then get up early to do your chores. Might be a little hard to explain, but I'm sure we can come up with a suitable backstory. :D

If Angela tucks me in at night and keeps the bed warm......I'd be more than happy to do the morning chores.
Although I figure she'd look a lot better on a John Deere than I would.
I also figure if she'd be willing to bale hay, the hired on cowboys I have working here wouldn't get any work done.
A New Holland 245 Bailer has one hell of a shake....It's a sight to see, with a well endowed , good looking woman sitting at the steering wheel.

The last time i had handcuffs on I got chased by a police dog that eventually cornered me.
When the RCMP showed up and the dog was licking my face and playing with me,....they had no sense of humour about it.
They cranked on those cuffs a little too tight and when I protested....they said the same damn thing "The keys will cost you"....
Little did they know ,that their Police Chief Boss ,was one of my main customers for my medicinal everclear......
It seems he's got a bad back, and needed my product..., on a daily basis.

I'm no rancher, but I've spent time in ranch country, in B.C. and the western states, and mingled with lots of ranch people. I've met ranchers who seem content with their lot in life, but I have yet to meet a rich one, or not a rich one who made his money from ranching, anyway. The ones who stick with it must be in it for the lifestyle.

Thats true...I'm not a very wealthy man from the ranching, but I have several sideline businesses to make me money as well.
One is what I explained earlier, where I'll cut out the middle man with a custom raised product, and deliver it direct to the consumer. It's much more profitable than getting 3.50 a pound on the hoof.
It was only by accident, raising some of my own food, that I discovered that there was a huge following of consumers that wanted ethically, and humanely raised animals, that were not full of pesticides, hormones, or other unatural substances....basically the meat I'll eat myself.
When my product hit the market place, the Government wanted it to be Organic Certified, and I refused. I feared that I would have to do it their way, on their terms, and the demand became even stronger in spite of my non-certification.
My family who are of Nordic background, taught me to build with logs. So I'll harvest logs from the mountains, and build what I need on my place. One of my barns is 7000 square feet, and it cost me very little to put up. I believe that a small producer should be self reliant ,and self sustaining. I harvested about 100 trees to build that barn....The next year I planted 12,000 seedlings to replace what I took.
These mountains , the trees ,grass ,and animals in them are my home ,and I'd like to think I look after them....and I can look any man in the eye and challenge him, if he says any different.

As far as my lifestyle, I take your comment as a compliment, and thank you for it..

You never know who's a member of the "Good Ole Boy" club.
I only do about 2 or 3 runs a year through my still....The taste testing and quality control alone, could make a boy go blind.
The everclear is about as good as any Vodka you can buy....My Apricot Brandy ,there's a 6 month waiting list for.

Is this one of the 'side businesses' you referred to earlier?

Ummm........You sure do pay attention don't you ?!?!
........YES.........
This might be a good time for a reminder - Don't post a whole lot of personal details online, because people do pay attention ...

;)

btw - I notice your beef thread has twice as many views as my bacon thread! :thumb:

If you knew the place that I'm located.......You'd know there isn't much danger that I'd get caught.
It's a hundred Klms. on gravel road, thats almost impassabale even in summer...Which is why I travel your way for company.....Making medicinal liquid isn't illegal...selling it is.
But I do appreciate the concern.
Thank you
