A comment on the Canadian hostages in Iraq

Is it just me, or is all the media attention focused on the white guy from Ontario, and very little is said about the south Asian who is not from Ontario?

The funniest thing about these hostages is that they went there to appease a bunch of Arab terrorist thugs.....and the Arab terrorist thugs are now their tormentors!

I don't think it's about race, I think it's the typical Toronto is the center of the universe thinking. Ever picked up an issue of the National Post? It should be called The Ontario Post.

as for the national post, with i would say close to about 75% of its readership if not more are in the southern ontario area, wouldn't it make sense to focus a bit more on the majority of readers? also the thing with the other guy is that he happens to reside in new zealand now, which means maybe his parents do as well, which also means maybe the media has easier access to realatives of the guy from ontario.

Who owns the National Post?

I don't think it's about race, I think it's the typical Toronto is the center of the universe thinking. Ever picked up an issue of the National Post? It should be called The Ontario Post.

The newpaper you accuse of being Ontario-centric is owned by a family from Winnipeg and maintains is corporate empire headquarters in Winnipeg. And it's not like this family runs their media empire with a hands-off approach. It's too easy to fall back on the idea there is an Ontario or a Toronto bias in the approach the media takes.


This Winnipeg family? The Aspers, specifically the offspring of the late Izzy Asper: David, Leonard, and Gail. The last one now being more involved with the family's push for a Muesum of Human Rights to be built in Winnipeg.

What is ironic is that the Asper family of Winnipeg, which owns the NP among several other newspapers, has to ship the NP from another city for its Winnipeg readers to get it.

Anyhow, given a choice between the Globe & Mail and the National Post, it's handsdown. I would gladly take the G&M over the NP any day. The G&M is moderate compared to the NP's firm right-wing bent.

It used to be East Indian but in the last year or so it's now South Asian. Is it possible that East Indians have gotten such a bad rap or bad name that they want to dissociate themselves from their own race.

South Asian conjures up an image of a Vietnamese or true asian not someone from India. Are these guys chameleons or leopards trying to change their spots, this kind of shit bugs me!

If he was referred to as an East Indian it just may rally his community around him or perhaps they don't give a shit!

My opinion is if anyone is stupid enough to go into that hell-hole, they risked their own neck and I'm sorry but that's their problem!

Actually it is only pretty much in north america they are refered to as east indian, in europe they are refered to as south asian.

Your right the correct term is South Asian (includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka...)... Any who....

Again this not to say that what the Captors are doing is right thing... but is it wise to go to a Muslim as a Christian Missionary? The 'Christian Peacekeepers' went there to monitor human rights abuses. Probably not the wisest thing to do in the middle of a civil war/ insurgency.
