Overall I think the number of mass shootings in the US has been significantly lower since the beginning of the pandemic. I assume studies will be done.

I grew up in a small, northern Manitoba community, surrounded by guns and hunting. My uncle even owned a large hunting and fishing lodge, so I had more than my share of meeting Americans and their guns and it was ALWAYS overkill....ALWAYS! As an adult I do not hunt or own a gun. I'm not against it, I'm simply not a huge fan of most wild meats other than fish. THAT is the main difference in gun cultures. When most Canadians see a gun, the first thing we think of is hunting game for food. When most Americans see a gun, the first thing they think about is a weapon to "protect" themselves from other humans. Having access to a gun at the drop of a hat never made me feel any more safe, in fact when I think about it, the opposite is more likely. Gun control, culture, and mental health are ALL aspects of these tragedies.

They shouldn't be in the hands of civilians.
The Second Amendment does specify “as part of a well regulated militia”? It never meant every Tom Dick and Harry should have a gun.
That militia was needed because England was intent on invading. Remember the Brits burned down the White House a few years after this was passed.

Not to discount the role of the second amendment in America's history, but it was written over 200 years ago. It is literally easier to climb Mount Everest than to get this thing amended, which is what it really needs. The forefathers are rolling in their graves seeing guns used more often to kill one another than to protect oneself.

After seeing what America has done to itself, particularly over the past 4 years, "China 2049" is looking more and more likely.

We have fewer gun deaths per capita here than the states because we have stricter gun laws. That in itself is proof that guns are the problem, not “crazies”. You can’t just brush this off and blame it on mental illness.
Exactly. In fact, research shows that people with mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.
Let’s call it for what it is. Hate crime. Not mental illness. Or “crazies”. Whether it is racism, misogyny, or self-loathing projected onto a person or group.
Stop stigmatizing the mentally ill many of whom have suffered trauma. The reality of gun violence is done by men who can’t handle their shit.

U.S gun ownership is about 120 guns per 100 people, and account for 45% to 46% of the 390 million small arms ,in private or civilian hands worldwide.

Part of the problem....in my opinion....is the absolute astounding number of small arms within that location.....and those are the ones that we know about.
Ive forgotten the number of small arms in the US that are unaccounted for, but I seem to remember they had been in the many millions.

On the news today they mentioned his motive was to get rid of the temptation, looking at his beard he may have a background with a fundamental religion. They don’t like the availability of sex period and he looks like he was mighty tempted!

Atlanta police: "Yesterday was a bad day for him, and this is what he did."

Jesus Christ, this is how they're framing it? I hope they made him some fucking chamomile tea.

Imagine if he'd been a brown person.
My first thought was the police made a deal with him... "If you admit your guilt to make a trial easier for everybody, we'll go out there and tell what happened to the public and media."

This is pretty standard if you watch police interviews. It's a method for getting people to talk. Guilty people will often take that deal in order to save face in their minds.

The burning of the White House was in retaliation for the Americans first attacking Canada. And don't forget about the Irish American Fenian attacks on Canada after the US Civil War. Fortunately, in those days we had a good militia in Canada to protect against American invasion.

Ok. First of all WTF IS “gun culture” tell it for what it is- another mentally unstable person went off their meds and got their hands on a gun. Stop blaming the inanimate object for the atrocity. I could put a loaded gun on the floor of a busy shopping mall and it would be perfectly harmless until some stupid human came and picked it up. He could almost as easily killed them with a framing hammer. That said it’s too easy for the crazies to get guns
We have that mentality creeping slowing into Canada.
First off, criminals with handguns.
Second off are people with guns (rifles and handguns) that go throught the process of getting an gun in Canada are largely compliant with laws and regs...
Third, people living on the margins of society that are scared of other people (who are violent- eg criminals), tend to want to get guns for their own protections.
4. If you are going into criminal activities you will likely get a gun for your protection.
5. Movie attitudes tend to rub off on the general public, and there are alot of action movies out there...

I will definitely have to say that there is a "gun culture" out there.

Look how Trump and his followers have blamed China for the virus.
We see anti Asian abuse all over twitter- people yelling slurs at anyone asian. This was bound to happen with idiots worshipping a psychopath.
Look at the American response to ban "French Fries" after France didn't jump on the band wagon... Anything French was to be avoided, even the American made French Fries...

Korean news interviewed a korean female who was at the scene. He walked into the shop and shouted, "I am going to kill all the Asians".
In Contrast, American media highlight's the killer's Sex-Addiction Mental Disorder not the witness' statement
Until we get further clarification, we just have to take the Sheriff's words, "The suspect was fed up and had a really bad day"

Everything is white supremacist this and racism that and only apply when a white guy does something to a non white. How about wait for some evidence to come out first. I wouldn't trust anything of those Asian websites for opinions either. Asians got killed by a white guy so of course they're gonna jump straight to racism without a second thought.

I am interested in your opinion Charlee: is it possible that this is an act against women generally and not an act against Asians specifically?

I have never seen any research into the racial makeup of women who work in massage parlours, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the workers who are Asian are a large majority.

So, in this case, the act against female massage parlour sex workers would affect the Asian community more heavily.

Further, is it of any use to parse this act in this way?

I’m thinking it is more informative to see this as an act against women in general and this man saw women as his nemesis—the source of his 'anger'—no matter their race.

Thoughts?
