Some of us cant stand him but he's going nowhere. Probably has the best job in all of sports. Maybe this is old news to many peop

Commissioner Gary Bettman will be the face of the National Hockey League for a while yet, negotiating a five-year contract extension last November, The Globe and Mail reported on Friday.

According to the newspaper, the nine-member executive committee unanimously approved the extension.

The Globe adds that one of the biggest backers to get Bettman the extension was Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs, who is the league's chairman of the board of governors. As chairman, one of Jacobs's duties is to keep the commissioner and the other key executives under contract.

"Old news. I believe my contract has been extended four times, each time with the approval of the board of governors," Bettman confirmed to The Globe via e-mail.

One governor told the paper he believed Bettman also reached an understanding with the executive committee that deputy commissioner Bill Daly and chief operating officer John Collins will also be retained beyond this season.

Bettman's current contract, which pays him $7.2 million annually, was originally set to expire this summer.

Considering that Roger Goodell only makes $10-11 mill by most estimates its hard to imagine how the NHL can justify paying him this kind of money. One has to only look at what the NFL TV contracts are worth compared to the NHL to realize that its time for him to go as a result of his utter failure to promote, sell or better in any way a great sport!!

He's just a puppet of the board of governors but getting paid handsomely to be a mouthpiece is a cushy job I'd like to have.

Bettman's arrogance astounds me. Air Canada, as a major sponsor, expressed their concern over whether they wished to continue to associate their brand with the NHL after the Chara hit and Bettman's petulant response was that perhaps the NHL might take their business elsewhere (AC handles charter flights for the 6 Canadian teams and 5 U.S.teams). It was good to see Via though, also a major sponsor, express their support for AC's position.

He must also believe the fans are morons when he continues to insist that Phoenix is a viable hockey market. Any 8 year old can do the math and quickly determine that the franchise can't survive in Phoenix.

It was awesome to see Bettman call them out. Sponsors looking for cheap PR need to keep their mouth shut. Air Canada needs the NHL more than the NHL needs Air Canada and Bettmen knew it

I like to see a bluff get called....

Air canada will simply take their advertising dollar elsewhere. They hardly need the nhl so not sure what you're talking about.

AC's operating revenue in 2010 was $9,739 million. The NHL charter business is worth approximately $20 million in revenue to AC. An 8 year old can do the math on who needs who more. Sponsors, other than perhaps Molson and Labatts, aren't exactly knocking down the NHL's doors to come on board.

NHL needs AC more than the other way around?

Let's see the Canadian teams try to get around without AC.

All charters for each team? Canadian owners would love to absorb that.

I wish someone would set him up with a hooker in his room and get some pictures.
hmmmmm? maybe we are onto something here?
Better yet convince him that Gadahfi duck wants to buy the Coyotes and move them to Tripoli. Maybe he'll go there on a due diligence trip and never come back. Given some of the previous owners approved by the Board of Governors on Bettman's recommendation, Gadhafi may not be much of a stretch. At least he wouldn't move the team to Hamilton.
