While I have no sympathy for the dead perp or his friend in this case, it is unfortuante the NRA would use this to justify America's archaic gun laws.
For every story like this one, there are hundreds of tragic stories about innocent people being shot because someone thought they werre an intruder or kids playing with dad's guns.

i agree with you rc, in that if you or i shouted out to the robber, he WOULD likely flee. but if the mom shouted out to him (in her deepest manly sounding voice) would he? likely he had been watching her place to know that she was alone

its complicated by "duty-to-retreat" and "stand-your-ground" clauses that are in effect to different degrees in different states. the news report cited by the OP is blatantly ignorant of informing viewers about any of these details.
one of the worst case scenarios is that of joe horn who murdered two burglars who where breaking into his NEIGHBORS house from the safety of his own home... and cleared of any wrong doing.
would not have met ended up dead.
as canadians, we are only allowed to use "necessary force" to protect ourselves, loved ones and property.

In human instincts, if you were not an intruder, then you would have just knocked the door and/or looked thru the window so that the people inside will know and politely tell you whether or not they will let you in! Look at the whole situation, if she didn't do what she had to do like the operator says, 2 good samaritans will be murdered, then these two bad samaritans will be executed. So, total of 4 lives will be gone. Now it's only 2 lives or so gone and they are bad samaritans. So, it's justifiable! There are many factors to consider! And yes, most people will think she's using the gun wisely!
At the beginning, it's wrong. But at the end, it's right!
Do you think the two guys are that stupid? They could have probably known the area and known how much time they had to do evil things to her and her baby! And by the way, it could have been planned right after Christmas!
I read about this a couple of days ago on a different type of board....I feel no sympathy for the guys...what they were attempting to do was pre-planned and the one guy that got 2 barrels of 12 guage got what he deserved......whilst I do think american gun laws are completely fucked up beyond belief this has nothing to do with those fucked up gun laws...the specifically has to do with a young gal defending her home and her baby....and IMO in Canada the legal outcome would be the same.

Thank you rat_fink for starting off my New Year with a great smile. I'm all for justice and justice was served. It's a real shame that the second perpetrator lived. I hope he dies slowly and painfully in jail.
BTW, I do agree that the USA gun laws are completely fucked up beyond belief.

Only 18 yrs old & she just lost her SO, left to raise her kid by herself.I don't feel sorry for those 2 guys.

Those guys were the scum of the earth. She did the right thing and she did it with a clear head and not in a rage. I have no problem with her doing it and no problem with laws that allow her to do what she did.
I wouldn't give a shit for any penalties I would face - if my little one was in danger, I would kill first, and ask questions later.

Everybody relates to the 'mother protecting her baby' part... but she'd be just as justified if she was on her own. Having the baby just raises the stakes higher but her life was in danger. That already makes the stakes high enough.
Except she probably would have been slapped with the improper usage/storage of a firearm, "negligence" towards her child (because the gun being readily at hand would mean she's an unfit mother), excessive use of force and so on.
