The Man Who Can't Get Fat

Mr. Perry, 59, can eat whatever he likes and never get fat. He cannot put on weight because of a condition called lipodystrophy that makes his body rapidly burn fat. He used to be a chubby child, but at age 12 the fat dropped off "almost overnight". He initially tried to eat more to gain weight, but it had no effect. His body produces six times the normal level of insulin.

The Man Who Doesn't Feel Cold

Dutchman Wim Hof, also known as the Iceman, climbed the Mt. Blanc in shorts in the icy cold. He has harvested world records and always stands for new challenges. Scientists can't really explain it, but the 48-year-old Dutchman is able to withstand, and even thrive, in temperatures that could be fatal to the average person.

The Boy Who Can’t Sleep

Rhett has a rare medical condition in which he can’t sleep a wink. He is awake nearly 24 hours a day, and his condition has baffled his parents and doctors for years until he was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called chiari malformation -- his brain is literally squeezed into the spinal column, resulting in compression of the brain stem.

The Girl Who is Allergic to Water

Teenager Ashleigh Morris can't go swimming or soak in a hot bath -- she's allergic to water. Even sweating brings the 19-year-old out in a painful rash. She suffers from an extremely rare skin disorder called Aquagenic Urticaria, so unusual that only a handful of cases are documented worldwide.

The Woman Who Can’t Forget

“AJ”, an extraordinary 40-year-old woman, has "nonstop, uncontrollable and automatic" memory of her personal history and countless public events. If you randomly pick a date from the past 25 years and ask her about it, she’ll usually provide elaborate, verifiable details about what happened to her that day and if there were any significant news events on topics that interested her. She was given the code name AJ to protect her privacy, and her condition is so unusual that a new name was coined for her condition: hyperthymestic syndrome.

The Girl Who Eats Only Tic Tacs

Natalie Cooper, a 17-year-girl, has a mystery illness that makes her sick every time she eats nearly any food. She can eat one thing that doesn’t make her sick: Tic tacs. For reasons that doctors are unable to explain, Tic tacs are the only thing she can stomach, meaning she has to get the rest of her sustenance through a tube.

The Woman Who Has 200 Orgasms Every Day

Sarah Carmen, 24, suffers from Permanent Sexual Arousal Syndrome (PSAS), which increases blood flow to the sex organs. She believes her condition was brought on by her birth control pills. She and her boyfriend split, and new partners struggle to keep up with her sex demands. "Often, I'll want to wear myself out by having as many orgasms as I can so they stop and I can get some peace," she said.

The Musician Who Can't Stop Hiccupping

Chris Sands, 24, hiccups as often as every two seconds, and sometimes even when he is asleep. Mr. Sands thinks his problem stems from an acid reflux condition caused by a damaged valve in his stomach. Mr. Sands, who is a backing singer in the group Ebullient, said the condition has hampered his career as he has only been able to perform four times.

The Girl Who Collapses Every Time She Laughs

Kay Underwood, 20, has cataplexy, which means that almost any sort of strong emotion triggers a dramatic weakening of her muscles. Exhilaration, anger, fear, surprise, awe and even embarrassment can cause sufferers to suddenly collapse on the spot. Like most cataplexy sufferers, Ms Underwood is also battling narcolepsy, a condition that makes her drop off to sleep without warning.

The Woman Who is Allergic to Modern Technology

Debbie Bird is allergic to cell phones and microwaves. The 39-year-old is so sensitive to the electromagnetic fields generated by computers, mobile phones, and microwave ovens that she develops a painful skin rash and her eyelids swell to three times their size if she goes near them. Mrs. Bird, a health spa manager, has transformed her home into an EMF-free zone to try and stay healthy.

Just an FYI

I think half of the Asian population is blessed/cursed with lipodystrophy...they don't get fat no matter what they eat.

I've read about hyperthymestic and it's a horrible condition. Our brains are designed to selectively remember for a reason.
Your statement is a stereotype. ;)

The rate of obesity in China has substantially increased (97%) in the last few years.

The over all obesity rate in Canada and China are relatively the same (in the low to mid 20th percentile).

I don't believe I am out of line :) I generated a graph comparing few Asian countries against the Western world. You can generate your own graph using Wold Health Organization (2005 data) from the link below:

http://www.who.int/infobase/report.aspx?rid=118

I did not look at Asia as a whole. I was referring to China.

It is hard to compare stats as a whole due to differences in methodology and years compared.

Stats can = 23.1 percent (2004)
China/WHO data = 25 percent

It is also interesting to note that the WHO states that In China, people don't need to be as fat as Americans to develop serious syndromes.

This has led government to use lower cut-off points in its guidelines on obesity. Thus 28.0 and above is defined as obese. Where as in Canada/WHO 30.0 is defined as obese.

Further more, the WHO states, that using these cut points rather than the WHO definitions would increase the prevalence of overweight and obesity in China by a further 66 million.

I think genius is nothing more than a person with super-memory...
I disagree. A person with an extraordinary memory might be called a genius due to the modern overuse of the word, but the word traditionally describes a person with original, innovative ways of thinking...individuals whose reasoning, inventiveness and creativity opened new doors to new ways of thinking or seeing things.

Michelangelo, Freud, Einstein, Edison...these people didn't just have an exceptional memory.

I think genius is nothing more than a person with super-memory, but you probably don't want that still....
I read about her before, and apparently her life is very miserable. Imagine every grief and humiliation you experienced all comes back to you like yesterday's. I also read that she even suffers insomnia for that reason.
It's a gift to be able to forget...
true but then you learn to forgive and to let go. I lost a large part of my memory of my childhood from age 16 and below and until now am still getting parts of it back :(

Then again, we always want what we don't have, right?

I think I have this! And if you ask Madeleine she will agree. I make hot chocolate and order lattes with half&half cream, eat supper then eat snacks. I don't think she can believe how much I eat sometimes lol

Seriously though, I wonder if the reason I can not gain weight is because I produce more insulin than most people. I can eat a ton of fat and nothing but if I eat a lot of healthy carbs I can sometimes gain a couple pounds. Interesting...

This statement makes no sense to me.
Dexi, it means he is the backup singer on their albums but has only been able to PERFORM live 4 times. :)
