Does anyone have good or bad comments about the 08 or 09 GTI. I went to test drive one for the hell of it because of their 0 down/329 per month lease deal. The dealer threw it down to 305 per month for me tax included/39 months. This is for the basic manual with no packages.

I had a blast in this car, needless to say the car is on many magazines award lists. Its probably not as fast as my car 0 to 60 but feels seat of the pants faster. Maybe its the engine howl or exhaust that makes it feel faster? There is a little of bit of lag in first but after that hold on, it will push you back on your seat.

I am worried about the VW reliablity part. I wonder if this generation has finally gotten its act together with that. I probably go back to the dealer tommorrow to look at it again. I'm in Love, for the record I still lust for the SI as well but Honda money factor on that car is sky high.

One last thing weeks ago, I tested out a 09 WRX and was let down, its fast as sin but harsh, the clutch and shifter are not smooth and the motor sounds awful.

If you compare both econoboxes, the SI looks better and the GTI is funner to drive. Not sure about handling since both suck as they are FWD based.

The GTI is based on the 2.0 TFSI engine. It comes with 200HP and 207Torque. With that engine, you get max torque starting 1800rpm and all the way 6000 rpm. Hence, the seat of the pants feeling right away which is great for city driving. Whereas, the SI gives you max torque (139) starting at 6000rpm. Another thing is you can get it software chipped by either REVO, GIAC or APR for 600$~. This will take your HP from 200 to 250 and your torque from 207 to 285. Then the car becomes a blast. Some VW dealerships have no problem with this. They even encourage it.

In terms of overall reliability, I think they are getting better but not anywhere near Honda's. Plus as long as you're under warranty, you're covered. I would never buy a VW over a Honda though.

For what the target market they are made for, which is a reliable econo car. I would go for the Honda. I had a Honda and it lasted me forever! Plus both are 4 bangers so great on gas!!!

Plus, try going to vwvortex.com or honda forums...they could probably tell you way more info than here, but also very biased too.

Chris what Honda model did you own? My 06 Accord now has 43k, dont know how to convert that to KM. Its has been 100% trouble free. I've never done the sport compact thing so the itch is there right now. I'm very skeptical of VW reliabilty, if only they didnt make the GTI so awesome I wouldnt go anywhere near a VW dealer.

Maybe I will check out the SI once more, maybe its these tough times they will lower its a grand or two. I highly doubt it though.

That's the part that would worry me as well. A few friends have owned VW's and 1/2 rave about them and the other 1/2 hated them. The cost of parts was insane. One guy waited almost a month for some kind of sensor.

If your buying for fuel economy & reliability then the choice is easy - Honda.

But - I own a German car & it is like a love hate relationship.

It's much like a high priced hooker who fucks yer brains out.
The sex is incredible - but it costs a small fortune.

I love my Benz but she's an expensive slut.

As for the VW their quality is much improved from 15 years ago.

If you make a good income it just may be worth it.
