IMO Hollywood maybe other movie making institutions have really lost the plot

Movie night last night. My wonderfully chested FWB wanted me to take her to see the Odyssey. Lots of hype for this one, big names in the cast, Christopher Nolan directing, should be a real block buster.

Well that was 3 hours of my life I won't get back. It might even get up there in the worst movie category for me. Her too. In fact the conversation afterwards was "what a bunch of fuckers, here Cyclops is just chilling on his own private island, raising sheep, making sheep cheese and these fucking asshats come storming in fucking things up and poke a burning stick in his eye! I mean he only had one. Then there's Charlize Theron basically being some island dwelling entity who randomly is feeding Matt Damon blue and white flowers. Add in Anne Hathaway and frankly had to be maybe the worst acting of a string of really bad acting, going from whispers to hoarsely saying shit, not really sure what the fuck she was doing other than sitting in front of a loom? is that what that thing is? Jon Bernthal - I guess somewhere along the way he rose up to be a king or something. And Spidey and his squeeze - I guess the best acting of a really shitting bunch of acting.

I don't know what the fuck C. Nolan was thinking with this horrible waste of time but I guess Matt D made a shitload of money in this stinker.

Effects - 2/10 (hey the sound effects were OK)
Overall - 0.0005/10

If this is the Hollywood blockbuster of the summer, its just all over for any decent movie making.

The FWB and I were so disgusted we just called it a night after enduring those 3 grueling hours.

The last worthwhile theatre picture I seen nearly 12 years ago, American Sniper. Everything else seemed to come down a long way since Shakespeare In Love at turn of the millennium.

I think the biggest fault with the film is a complete misunderstanding of Odysseus as a character. They really laboured the point of zeus law and inviting in guests as a friend, conflating this as rules of engagement during conflicts and odysseus regretting actions during the war with Troy. In the story Odysseus inflates how cunning, arrogant and wily he is, he would be proud of the Trojan horse. There are moments in the story where odysseus cries but this is likely more PTSD rather than regret.

Not sure why you are upset over the Cyclops, he did eat a number of odysseus's men.

The movie was fine, it was beautifully shot, the locations were perfect, a lot of the acting was great (Patel, Page, Pattinson were my stand outs). Nolan still cannot seem to write interesting women though.

I won't spoil the movie for anyone but the ending was a bit odd.

I went from going to the theaters once a month to not having stepped foot in a theater in maybe 5 years? Everything is another superhero movie, lame comedy, shitty remake, shitty sequel, or a long ass boring movie... I was very curious about Odyssey due to the reviews but it was the castings that made me go NOPE there's no way in hell they can pull this off.

For me, the best movies over the last 5-10 years are small indy films, Korean, Japanese, Icelandic or some European. The big Hollywood blockbusters are almost universally disappointing. Oh, and almost any movie done by Netflix will be shit.

I saw the movie “Obsession” a few weeks ago.

It’s not from the big studios and has no famous actors, but it’s one of the best damn movies I’ve seen in a long time. Unsettling, disturbing, and also humorous at times.

It has a jump scare that literally left me vibrating.

The casting was mostly fine, but I would say that Ralph Fiennes was a batter Odysseus in The Return than Matt Damon in this movie, that isn't surprising considering Ralph Fiennes would probably be better than Matt Damon in most movies

I will wait for something to be streamed on Prime or another service if it is one that interests me.Too many drawbacks sitting crammed in a seat with people talking ,on their phones,coughing,sneezing ,passing gas and then have to get up to pee is another ordeal if you are in the middle of the row.Or it could just be me turning into a grumpy old man yelling at the clouds.

I have a pretty skookum home theater system but there are times and for some "blockbuster movies" where the theater experience enhances things. I get it though, when fuckers are talking etc. Long ago I figured they deserved a very loud "Shut the fuck up" which generally works well and has never gotten blowback. And yeah, old guy yelling at the clouds is good too.

For the major studios, it's all about blockbusters and limiting the risk of major flops. Thus, we get a steady diet of superhero movies and franchises (Top Gun, Mission Impossible).

The problem lies with how the film is written and directed. Look at Lord of the Rings... kept mostly to the story line of the book and it did well in theatres... Its when you take a story that everyone is familiar with; and start to put your spin on it, or try to make it drip modern woke policies...

The concentration of ownership is causing the same thoughts and processes to dominate the industry. Studios used to have a variety of tastes, techniques, and produced a broad range of fare. With Disney owning studio after studio and Paramount buying up other companies as well, groupthink is settling in. It's no wonder foreign and indy fare is starting to take over the award seasons, it's the only original content left. If it's not a sequel or a franchise or a complete rehash or reboot of a hit from the past, the majors are staying away from it. Superhero fatigue is real. The sooner it all collapses on itself the better.

On top of this, a few directors, like Nolan, Villeneuve and others of that ilk are seen as able to do no wrong. Nolan in particular has always been a bit of a tough nut and you either love his stuff or you don't. I lost all interest in him about four or five incomprehensible movies ago. I don't mind being challenged to think by a movie, I don't want to have to read a coles notes to follow the convoluted or time jumping plots. Nor am I interested in testing my bladder for 3 hours of anything, good, bad or otherwise.
