Both parts of David Tennant's swan song The End of Time are going to be aired on Space on January 2nd.

http://www.spacecast.com/Schedule.aspx?fldate=01/2/2010 12:00:00 AM

Have a bootleg of Waters of Mars only started watching it. So far nothing special , but mothing special for a Tennant Who is usually damn good. (Except for that one where the guys girlfriend's living head gets stuck in a block of concrete- bloody awful that one....)

Saw the Tennant episodes of Sarah Jane Series 3- very well done and some nasty foreshadowing.

How many of the folks on this thread rate david Tennant as the Doctor?

Personally, I haven't seen too much of the last couple of Doctors, Eccleston and all, but NONE of them can even come close to Tom Baker in my book. That guy was the fucking mutt's nuts as the Doctor and nobody will ever be better.

For those who don't know, Tom was the Fourth Doctor and I think he was the longest in the role.

Class!

I think Smith's going to do OK. I liked him. I'm guessing we won't see his interpretation of the character till next week as he seemed to spend a lot of this episode channeling Tennant until the regeneration was complete.

Loved the scene with clips of all the previous Doctors and #11 walking through them.

Debut episodes are usually pretty tough especially with all the introductions of new characters.

It also looks like this season is going to pe pretty creepy given Moffatt's propensity for creepiness.

Question though- were those knife holes in the wedding dress? I thought they were, the person Iwas watching wiht disagreed,

I looked at it a couple of times and couldn't tell.

The new Doctor is too young. I can't see it. They are going to turn the Companion in to a relationship thing, that is a mistake.

It was always great when the Dr wanted to be with his companion, but knew he couldn't. Billie Piper's character was great that way, and I loved how they eventually got together, but this new Dr, I don't know.....
Okay. I take it back. Whenever there is a new Dr I always think the same thing. "He won't be as good, the last Dr was the best, nobody can top that!". Well, I don't know if the new Dr will be ask good as the past Dr's, the first episode does have me interested. At the very least he has potential, and the new companion is good. Not as hot as Billie, but good looking and a wee bit sassy! I htink this could be interesting, at least worth watching the next few episodes to see how it all comes out.

I thought the show was pretty good but I wouldn't mind seeing the companion into a relationship thing .
A bit of sexual tension is common for many programs ?

eg .. Get Smart, Gilligan's Island, Batman , X-Files, Currently on air : Castle, Fringe ...

I'd like to see the series explore why the Dr is a celibate ...

And if he is the last of the Timelords maybe he should be visiting the local sperm bank and making contributions.

I've seen every extant DW episode there is so I think I know my Drs. I rate Tennant #1 he was so damn good.

Here's the list, I was going to leave McGann off because while the audio adventures he's been doing are decent, they aren't canon and the one movie he was in wasn't enough to really make a determination but I still liked him better than Hartnell or Troughton. Smith is exempt as well for obvious reasons.

1) David Tennant
2) Tom Baker
3) Tie Jon Pertwee/ Eccleston
5) Sylvester McCoy
6) Peter Davison
7) Colin Baker
8) Paul McGann
9) William Hartnell
10) Patrick Troughton

Here's a challenge- rate the companions or maybe a top 10????

Nah, Tom Baker for me. He was the Doc when I was hiding behind the couch watching as a kid. Part of his charm is that he's exactly the same weird eccentric character in real life. McCoy was unmitigated shit. I reckon Davidon and Colin Baker both rank above him. I'm surprised you missed Peter Cushing. He wasn't toooooo bad even though it wasn't pukka BBC Doctor.

I guess we can agree to disagree!

I also rate Troughton over Hartnell (and McCoy too for that matter).

Why the HELL is The Doctor wearing clip-on braces?!?! He needs to have buttons sewn on the inside of the trousers' waistband to allow the braces to be buttoned on.
If you will recall the first episode where the Doctor assembled his wardrobe while running thru a hospital. The "assembelage" was the best he could do under the circumstances.
The Doctor hasn't been a standard of quality tailoring if I can recall. (Remember the U-Boat Captain .... and remember Tom Baker's claim to fame was a 30 foot scarf )

Interview: Karen Gillan Travels the Universe with Doctor Who
Kat Angus
April 12, 2010

As Amy Pond, the latest companion on Doctor Who, Scottish actress Karen Gillan argues she's just as important as the time-travelling Doctor.

When the new series of Doctor Who premieres April 17 (9 p.m. ET on Space), it will be a rebirth of sorts for the revered British sci-fi series. The show is under new management, as longtime staff writer Steven Moffat replaces Russell T. Davies as Doctor Who’s showrunner; as well, 26-year-old Matt Smith will step into some very large shoes as the eleventh Doctor. It’s a high-pressure situation, as Doctor Who fans are among the most critical viewers in television.

But just as Moffat and Smith face pressure to live up to their predecessors, Karen Gillan, too, is in the hot seat. Playing Amy Pond, the Doctor’s latest young companion, the Scottish actress must prove to viewers that she’s worthy of travelling the universe with the universe’s most notorious time traveler. Luckily for the 22-year-old, she’s opted to trade her nervousness for out-and-out and excitement.

“Of course, I’m feeling quite nervous about how people are going to react, but do you know what? I’m kind of really excited about it now,” Gillan says. “I think that, as a team, we’re all confident in the work we’ve done. I just hope that people like it.”

And, Gillan posits, Moffat is the perfect person to introduce her to Who fans. The scribe of massive popular episodes such as “The Girl in the Fireplace” and “Blink,” Moffat knows how to combine light-hearted whimsy with white-knuckle suspense.

“He’s kind of given it a bit more of a fairy-tale feel, especially in the first episode,” she says. “A lot of people who have seen the first episode have said it’s one of the scariest, and that is not half as scary as what’s to come in the series.”

This is exactly how he brings Amy Pond into the Doctor Who universe – she first meets the Doctor as a wide-eyed young girl, only to meet up with him years later under less-than-ideal circumstances. But don’t let the term “fairy tale” fool you – Gillan is adamant that Amy is anything but a damsel in distress.

“She is brilliant! Well, as a character – hopefully my performance lives up to how she’s written,” she says, laughing nervously. “She’s kind of this free spirit, which causes some turbulence in the relationship between the Doctor and Amy because she won’t listen to him all the time. She’s funny and she’s really passionate and, also, I think she’s a little bit lost underneath all of that. She’s really up there in importance with the Doctor and I think she’s quite pivotal to the whole series.”

Quickly, she adds: “I’m not saying that she’s completely equal to the Doctor, because I think they’re kind of worlds apart in terms of character, but she’s definitely up there in importance.”

But many Who fans would argue that the most important aspect of the new series is how Matt Smith measures up as the Doctor, considering that David Tennant’s tenth Doctor was one of the most popular incarnations the show has ever seen. As far as Gillan is concerned, viewers have nothing to worry about; Smith, she says, is bizarre and manic and fun in all the right ways.

“He does have big shoes to fill, and I think he definitely fills them,” Gillan says, clearly gearing up to gush about her costar. “He’s kind of perfect for the Doctor, because he’s this fairly young guy who has this ancientness to him. Sometimes the things he says just sound like an old man! He’s quite eccentric, so that kind of works in his favour; you can really sort of buy into the fact that he’s from another world, which is a really big part of the Doctor. Matt plays that aspect of it really well. He’s got the mischief of a young boy and the wisdom of an old man and he’s just so exciting to watch.”

All in all, Doctor Who’s new season may face myriad challenges when it comes to impressing fans, but Gillan has never been one to back down.

“With each episode, we go to life-threatening extremes every time, and that is a challenge in itself, just to portray these things and go to that level every week,” she says. “I think the hardest things about this job are the most rewarding things, because when you’ve been challenged to up your game and you do it, it’s one of the best bits. “

Doctor Who premieres Saturday, April 17 at 9 p.m. ET on Space.

I never thought of Cushing actually and rate him below Troughton- that absent mind professor act of his was pure shite.

I have to agree that McCoys first season was MAJOR crapola but there were a lot of great stories in his last two- Remembrance of the Daleks (it's in my top 10 or close to it, I haven't factored in teh Ecclestons or Tenants so it might be top 20 now :) ) Battlefield, Fenric,Ghostlight (yeah it didn't make a heckuva lot of sense but I liked it.) McCoys portrayal was lot better in his last two seasons and his chemistry with Sophie Aldred was excellent.

BTW read today that Jo Grant is going to be popping up on the next season of Sarah Jane adventures.

See where you're coming from Bruins, but all the doctors have had good bad and indifferent stories. How the actor portrays the character was the thing that made the difference. Good, bad or indifferent story, Tom Baker was always eminently watchable. McCoy did get better. Sophie Aldred was pretty sexy. Had a bit of a horn for Tegan myself. MMMmmm.

So what's you favorite Baker?

Mine is Talons of Weng-Chiang followed closely by Pyramids of Mars. After that it's a bit of a muddle- Genesis of the Daleks maybe.

I have all of the Tom episodes and for some reason my favourite is Horns of Nimon. I don't think it is the best story and looking back, the effects, costumes and support acting is cheesy, but I remember watching that particular episode as a 7/8 year old kid and it scared the b'jesus out of me. I think the cheesiness is all part of the charm of that era; Blakes Seven had it in spades too. I( guess it's kinda similar to the debate over old Trek and Next Gen.

Gillan is SUPER hot. Only Tegan can compare.

Is it me though, or is the writing in Season 5 simply awful. Too much suspension of disbelief, too many inexplicable occurrences, too many unexplained plot jumps. WW II Spitfires that fly in space? Robots who become human because their emotions are stimulated? And on and on. It just seems like there are so many holes in the writing this year. Too bad.

But Gillan makes it worthwhile

Dr Who is characterized by bad writing. In last weeks' story you had the Dr. writing a zero setting virus in about 30 seconds on a cell phone ... getting it transmitted around the world ... (with no ill effects ) ... having every clock set to 000 ... and the aliens being able to trace the origin of the virus back to the cell phone ... thereby finding prisoner zero in under half an hour ...

Question I have is who is the story written for ... Gillan is a kiss-o-gram girl - Police women in hotpants (plus references to Nun, French Maid outfits ...)

What is an eight year old kid going to make of all this ...

PS For the eight year old kid in 2010 the TARDIS looks like a porta-potty

Just a warning that the volume is loud on this one. I recommend turning your volume down before watching.
