Straight Dope is a good place to shoot down urban legends. According to Cecil, the Mayan Calendar , like other calendars, just rolls over (hte world doesn't end every Dec 31, just rolls over to January 1.)

What happens in 2012?

Oil at $ 225 per barrel. Demand way greater than the supply. The credit crunch of 2008, halted financing for exploration for additional supply of the precious commodity.

Just an example, the offshore oil discovery in Brazil last year is estimated at 41 Billion barrels. The recent oil discovery in Ghana pales in comparison to this but would certainly help the economy of that African nation which is actually becoming well-known in the West as an upcoming financial hub. Would be cool to accumulate my favorite oil stock Petrobras. Fund Managers in Wall Street predict PBR to become the biggest oil stock in a few years and have been accumulating it since early 2008. Oil reserves in the Artic which Canada, Russia, and the US have a big crush on is estimated at almost 90 billion barrels. With annual worldwide consumption of 31 Billion barrels a year, the stock in Brazil and the Artic can makes us go for almost 4.25 years. And extracting oil from those places is not the easiest thing to do. After 2012, oil could go to $ 300 per barrel after two more Olympics.

But in real terms, priced in gold, oil will not have risen in value. Rather, the value of the dollar would have dropped in real terms. The TSX and DJIA will drop after this bear market rally that people call a recovery. It is a false recovery. Now I am not suggesting that everyone dump their investment portfolios since the market is moving sideways, and even if it made a 5% correction drop, the year end dividend payout might become huge. This is when you switch to precious metals and get into the commodities such as gold. Then, you don't have to worry.
