I came across two articles recently that made me wonder about how the World in general views Canada. The first was about the number of refugees currently in the country. My figures are probably incorrect but I seem to recall that there were something like 160,000 claimants waiting for a decision of which 40,000 had already had there claims denied but could not be located.

The second was about the use of H1N1 vaccines being given to Afghan detainees by the Canadian military. Apparently military officials are saying that the Geneva Convention requires detainees/prisoners to be given the same medical treatment as the controlling forces.

Do foreign nations think of us a softies ?

The number of refugee claimants is miniscule compared to other major industrialized nations.
People looking to us for refuge does not make us 'softies', it makes us a 'land of opportunity' for people in lands that have none.

Treating prisoners in a humane manner is what makes us a civilized nation.
It's just one of the many things that makes us stand apart from the third world shit-holes with the arbritrary justice systems.

And the latest boat-load of Sri-Lankan refugees come without documentation, papers, or any proof that they'll do any good for this country. Save me the diatribe about being humane. Will you still be 'humane' when you your son or daughter is killed because one of these idiots we were too kind to send back blows up a building? Right.

Sorry, I take a hard stance on immigration. Send them ALL back. With the exception of a select few, most work menial jobs that require no more than a grade 10 level education, if that. I can't go to a Surrey Tim Horton's anymore without seeing at least one non-immigrant working there. Land of opportunity? Really?

I'm sorry, if you weren't BORN here, you don't have a RIGHT to be here. I'm not saying immigrants can't visit, but we should treat them as if it's a privilege, and not a god-given right to be a Canadian.

Mr North, You must then be a native (first nations) Canadian.

We all arrived from somewhere, the question is just how many generations back.

So you have a problem with native born Canadians working at Tim Horton's ?

"Immigrants" that are visiting, are tourists and those we need. ;)

Is it just me or is this one of the most confusing statements? Does he mean immigrants? Does he want non-immigrants to work there? Does he want immigrants to work there? Are immigrants stealing Tim Horton's jobs from non-immigrants?

Mind you, anyone who drink's Timmy's coffee should have their head examined anyway.

So the question is, are you going to tell your father/grandfather/great grandfather to fuck off back to wherever they came from???

Maybe you weren't taught to share your toys when you were a kid?

If I were a first nations person, I would probably wish that this had been the policy all along, but I am rather glad that my great-grandparents were allowed to immigrate here. I know for a fact that the "property" granted to them by the Upper Canadian government to farm in the 19th century was previously occupied by indigenous inhabitants, and that those people had little say in the matter. I expect they had a grudge, too.

As is the coherency of some posters here.

if you weren't BORN here, you don't have a RIGHT to be here.
So, none of the brown people or Asian people in this country were actually born here, right? Is that what you're implying?

It not you. The statement (to paraphrase through the double negatives) reads that everytime you go to Timmies you see at least one white guy. I am guessing he also uses "irregardless" and he takes stuff out of the freezer to "unthaw" it. Personally, I find if I want to unthaw something, it is way more effective to put it IN the freezer. :p

You know, what is so ironic is that the very people who bash immigrants and call themselves proud Canadians, can't speak, write or spell their own language lol. I seldom comment on punctuation here because for one, I am not perfect but also to avoid the crap of being called 'punctuation police' but really, some of the posts on here are so hard to read. In the end, you just have to consider the source and laugh.
