One man has been arrested and more arrests are expected, RCMP say, following a vicious assault in Courtenay, B.C., that police believe was racially motivated.


Jay Phillips said he was attacked Friday on a city street by three young men stripped to the waist. A video of the incident posted on YouTube shows Phillips, 38, fighting back as he's surrounded by the trio. It's not known who shot the video or posted it on the website.


Phillips said the attack was unprovoked.


He said a truckload of men drove by and started shouting racial epithets. "We're going to kill you, we're going to lynch you really vile stuff."


Phillips said the three men, who appear to be in their early 20s, circled back and confronted him.


The men "got out of the truck, surrounded me, still calling me names, threatening me, threatening my family, saying this is our white town and you're not allowed here stuff like that.


"Then they all came at me and surrounded me."


In a news release issued Monday, police said they are reviewing video evidence and questioning witnesses, but preliminary investigation indicates there may have been a racial element in the incident.


Phillips, who said he's the target of racism on almost a daily basis, said he felt compelled to report this incident to police.


"There's a lot of young kids of different races in this town and they may not have been as fortunate as me and I'd like to take care of these kids," he said.


"I think everyone should be allowed to walk down the street with their head held up and proud of who they are. Everybody."

That's both fucked up and sad. Speaking as a white guy myself, how pathetic must these guys' lives be if they have to go around shouting racial slurs and attacking non-whites to make themselves feel better about themselves?

I have to say, though, I find it interesting that in a story where the issue of race is central to the actual story, CBC is too "politically correct" to mention the races involved. The only reason we know the attackers were white is because of a quote from the victim, and we have no idea what the race of the victim is. I'm sorry, that's not being sensitive to the races involved, that's flat-out poor reporting.

That area has never been "white only", btw. It has one of the oldest Chinese cemeteries around, a hundred years ago one of the largest Chinese communities complete with hotels, shops, theatre, housing (coal mining town), and many of the Asian families have been there a helluva lot longer than those white boys.

I won't even bother to mention that the Native population has lived and prospered in that area for several hundred years longer, evidence of settlements along the river banks were easy to find 30-40 years ago. Nor should it come as any surprise that with a nearby Air Force base that the racial mix has been evident, considering the Americans have been stationed there for decades as well.

I shouldn't even have to tell anyone that displaced slaves came to Vancouver Island over 150 years ago too, and their history there is well documented. In fact, most non-white people have longer histories than white folk, imo.

I think there is a real problem with racism pretty much across North America, and it is not, unfortunately, confined to "ignorant hillbillies." Maybe the white men in suits who live in West Vancouver and South Granville are politically correct enough not to shout racial slurs in public, but they are still telling racist jokes to one another.

I hope these guys really are early 20s. They are going to get caught quite easily. There names and pictures are going to be in the paper. They are going to be stuck with this for life, everyone they ever meet will know, or might find out.

Fucking idiots must be shitting their pants. They will be able to use the hate crime legislation and hopefully put these guys away for a decent amount of time. They must feel like idiots.

As I watched this video, I was wondering why this guy, who is the victim of this attack, didn't run away? Why did he goad these three white trash boys on? He was the one that yelled, 'Come on!' Why did he stand and fight? What started this fight? What was happening 5 minutes prior? He was called 'nigger' by his assailents, but the victim also yelled a threat that these guys are dead.

Might be more to this story than immediately meets the eye. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not siding with the 4 assholes who attacked this dude and pretty much had their asses handed back to them. It's just that there must be more to this than the video suggests.....I just get that feeling. Who knows? Could be as simple as getting his as kicked because of his colour, or it could be more than that? Let not slip into this lynch-mob mentality until we know the whole story, which ought to come out in the wash....
