Do I think we'll need anything other than English in Vancouver? While it'd be convenient to learn Punjabi, Chinese, and Japanese just so we could all communicate...I don't really think we'll end up with no choice to speak anything other than English (because realistically, we don't really need French in Vancouver either).

Look at the US - there are places where mostly everyone speaks Spanish and businesses have to advertise "We Speak English!" but people can GENERALLY get by no matter which of the two languages they speak depending where they are.

That being said, they really should just make English AND Spanish their official languages, teach them to all children, and call it a day. But then I guess they wouldn't be able to marginalise Spanish speaking people (especially those immigrants from Cuba who get AUTOMATIC asylum as soon as they land) into low paying jobs due to not knowing the language (and therefore unable to enter school), and classes to learn it not being available for any reasonable amount of money. I guess that time in Miami seeing how they're treated made me quite jaded eh?

Considering a LOT of signs AND products have both English & Spanish, I'd have to agree with it should be the 2nd official language lol.

As for the Chinese, or any other new Canadian language, the children of immigrants have been brought up in 2 languages for decades with no ill effects & no significant changes, other than the fact that it is actually now easier for their parents to get information from banks, govt agencies and elsewhere. They often act as translators, or learn English once they start school. The lucky ones get sent to Saturday schools to keep up their non-Cdn studies and remain fluent in both languages.

Richmond, eh? Not too surprising considering Richmond is reported to
have a relatively high concentration of Chinese:

It is simply good business practice to post signs in the language of those
whose numbers are so high in the region of the business. BTW, i am
wondering what the languages on the sign were, besides English which
was at the top of the list. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and EI?

i agree a lot of Asians here in the west canada as much as In U.S we have a lot of Asians Americans.

Lets be fair about this though - what you see on craigslist is SMOKIN hot. What you get at the door is usually still nice...but not what you saw on CL. And the restrictions are normally numerous.

Missy, I simply cannot judge on these matters from a personal
experience perspective, since i've only seen 2 ladies from CL. But
both were Asian, Korean i think, with one looking below my expec-
tations and one being above them. And good service from both,
though not as extraordinary as yours ;

As far as others alleged experiences are concerned, i see an incredible
amount of interest in CL on PERB, especially the Asian SPs. I don't
recall this being here two years ago.

I have also noticed a thread here for the purpose of revealing what
pics on CL are authentic, or fake. Whether or not that occurs more
often than with PERB advertisers or other non CL advertisers, i have
no proof & do not know. In some cases, BTW, such as with youself,
people advertise on both PERB & CL.

Chinese would be hell. I have a few Chinese friends who can only speak a few phrases; what chance do I have.

If there is Chinese sign language there may be some hope.

F'ing "A" lenny I can't be thankfull enough for those sweet Asain
flowers that bless our land and not to mention that having seen
many of the Asian providers I'm learning a new langauge at the
same time. Hell yes they love you long time.

There just ain't no comparison IMHO.

An english speaker can't be "forced" into learning chinese. but it would definitely be an advantage to speak another language, especially if you would like to do business with the segment of the population that speaks the language. There are over a billion chinese speakers in the world, why wouldn't you want to sell your goods and services, whatever they may be, to them?

Vancouver is a small city, and heavily populated with asians, most of whom speak english. Immigration canada strictly limits non-english speakers from immigrating. Yeah, you don't believe me, but the engrish that the immigrants here speak is still a lot more than what the typical person speaks in China or India or South Korea or some country in Africa. Everywhere I go in the world, whether asia or europe, I can always find someone who can speak english. English is the lingua de franca in the world.
