I have 2 black belts....... Hapkido and Karate. If someone comes at you MOVE BACKWARDS, they weren't indoors backed up against a wall with nowhere to go. Walk backwards tell him/her to drop it. If their's enough time to unholster your firearm and shoot, you have time to walk backwards and grab your baton. It's a knife not a gun, only useful at close range.
Newsflash: a baton's only useful at close range too. If you're within baton range, you're within range of getting slashed. That's something I would have expected a double blackbelt to understand.

your mom says hi.
if the guy was indeed coming at them with a knife then yes i think they were well within their right to use deadly force. this would have been the right time to use a taser but from what i heard neither officer had one on them.

if how it all went down is indeed how they say it went down cause we've been down this road before with the yvr incident.

however i don't think the cop had any right at all to take a phone from someone and delete the footage. that makes them look more guilty.

Uhhh... batons are about 1 1/2 - 2 feet longer then a blade.

Yup. They don't get long enough to hit a guy without the very real risk that he will lunge at you and stab/slash you. I would have thought that a double blackbelt would understand about threat ranges. Or are you talking about some sort of crazy new 10' long baton?

Oh and pepper spray? Are you serious? When a guy's unarmed, sure it's a good option. The problem with it is that there's a very real chance that instead of incapacitating a person it'll just make them mad, and get them to start lashing out blindly. When the guy's got a knife, that's not a chance you should take unless you don't have any other options.

Yeah, ever see some of the high as a kite guys that they pepper spray and tazer on cops? just makes them madder and more dangerous. they don't know if the guy's strung out or not. was his choice to not listen to them.
I wonder in the States if you're a citizen with a gun if they'd even question you for shooting a guy who came at you like that??

Sorry I guess I'm not a sissy. They need higher standards and better training for police if they are threatened by staplers and small kives. 6 months of training and you might get your second belt in martial arts, hardly ready for a real fight. Yet police train for 6 months and heres a badge go protect people.

What? Move backwards so you can trip over a rock or the curb or whatever and fall on your ass...on your back totally exposed. You move laterally, 45 degrees to the assailant, so that you don't fall over your own two feet. And of course you have 2 black belts....and Reagan never dyed his hair.

You're not a sissy? Thats a laugh. Get off your ass if you think you can do better. Easy to sit on your ass and critize everyone and everything, another to put your money where your mouth is.

Well if your dumb enough to move backwards without looking over your shoulder then you deserve to fall. And weren't they on a sidewalk? Walk 45 degrees backwards into cars or onto the street?

Well you'd have to be pretty fucking stupid to look behind you when you have the guy in front of you now wouldn't you?

Not to mention with a KNIFE!.

All he needs is just that "split second".

So my question in the first place was what would you guys do if you were in the Police Officers postion.

I got my answers. Some want to be the hero/superman/batman/the guy with blackbelts in two different self defense sport whatever you want to call yourself AND some would just play it safe. Cool.

Black belt in which style? It does matter, take a boxer to the ground and he won't know what to do.

Yeah, take him to the ground before he puts his fist down your throat.lol
So you're telling me, if you have a gun on you and some guy comes at you with a knife or whatever you're gonna try and take him to the ground first eh.
ya right. Easy to say that until you're put in that position. Do you really think a cop enjoys having to shoot someone and take their life? easy to say when you're not in their shoes. thats my point. its easy for everyone to say they should have done this or that, but until you're actually put in that position none of us can say for sure what we'd do. People seem to forget that they're human too and I'm sure they get scared or react just like any other person no matter what training they get. I watched a homeless guy outside my work waving a machette around at passerbys and that guy got lucky, there were half a dozen cops with their guns out and he smartly dropped it. I'm sure not a moments gone by when the cop who shot that guy doesn't wonder if it couldn't have gone different. Fact is shit happens fast. Bottom line is the guy had a weapon and chose not to drop it.
People think they can do better then hey, RCMP keep advertising that they're hiring.
