Urine Test -- This guy has a point! This was written by a construction worker in Fort McMurray . Read on . . .

I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes, and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to earn that pay check, I work on a rig site for a Fort McMurray construction project. At any time I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem. HOWEVER, what I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test. Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Understand - I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do on the other hand have a problem with helping someone sit on their ass, drink beer and smoke dope. Could you imagine how much money this country would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check? Hope you will pass it along because something has to change in this country.

Is it the company requiring this urine test, or the company?

I'm assuming his company makes him take the test...

they pay the freight and that is their right...

as for the welfare recipient...

the government i.e. the taxpayer pays the freight...

why as taxpayers, do we not have the right to insist on testing...

I do not like the idea of allowing employers to impose at their whim mandatory drug testing on everyone. Its none of their business what individuals do and where do you draw the line?

I don't like the idea of supporting drug addicts through government support either...but there are civil rights issues at play for everyone when we start imposing these things on some segments of our population.

It is not the goverment's place to be the morality police. Drinking & doing drugs are not even illegal, so it's none of their business, (& before anyone says doing drugs is, no it isn't, it's the buying & selling that is). If that was allowed, what point would we stop at? Mandatory urine testing for all Canadian citizens? Video cameras in our homes? We can not choose who is allowed to have civil rights & who isn't.

His argument makes no sense at all. Passing a urine test on a rig is done for safety reasons; to protect him from doing something he should not do under the influence of drugs or alcohol that will endanger his life and those he works with. Safety on a rig is paramount.

There is no law in this country that requires you to be drug free to collect social assistance. If there were, a significant number of people who take drugs or alcohol would be off social assistance. If that was the case, what do we do with them?

Oh I forgot, the comment is from someone in Alberta -- the land without a social or environmental conscience.

Actually.... the oil companies and service rig contractors save alot of money in insurance premiums by way of drug testing. It is for their benefit, the safety on the rigs is left up to guys like me who actually enforce the regulations. Anyone can cheat a urine test, trust me it's not deterring anyone.

Just because you are on social assistance does not mean you lose your rights.

You can easily say that anyone who uses a government service should be drug tested. Need a passport, pee in a cup. Need to go on EI, pee here please.

No problem I will take a drug test if they will give me a check.
But i can't take a spelling test .. i would fail:)
