Ok, this is in reference to designer suits (zegna, d&g,etc)-what is the difference between designer names and what am I paying for between them (not between a zegna and one from a mexx store, for example). What differentiates one brand from the other - just the look or is one known for quality more than another? Anyone recommend where I can find reasonable prices for them (eg $1000 range).

You have to also take into account your body type. My SD can only shop at certain places because he is a fairly slim man. His friends are more stocky and tend to like Harry Rosen.

The most important part about buying a suit is that it fits you right, feels comfortable, and looks great on you.

In general, higher priced suites will use better material, have better stitching (or be sewn by hand) and there is more attention to the detailing.

I would also suggest the possiblity of having a suit custom made for you. You know it will look and feel great, and you will be able to get it made from whichever quality material you desire.

Designer suits are overpriced for what you get. For $1,000, you can get a better quality suit from a place like Dunn's that will look a million times better.

Sperminator--- you know your sartorial shit! I am seriously impressed. If you aren't the manager of Harry Rosen's, by any chance, do you work for them?

Would you be kind enough to share the name of your tailor and chemisier...

Depends on your age, size, and the reason for the suit.

Generally speaking - high-end business attire for average/stocky men would wear Armani Collezioni, Brioni, or Ermengildo Zegna (not Z Zegna, that's their more lower-end sporty line I believe). These suits are generally on the more 'conservative' side with a less tailored look.

The more fashion-trendy lines like Prada, D&G, Versace, and Hugo Boss are usually worn by slimmer men (but of course anything can be made-to-measure anyway). I swear by Prada myself, but that's because their suits fit me like no other suit, and I like its unique tailoring. Where does one even buy a Prada suit in Vancouver anyway (with a proper selection...)? I bought mine in Italy.

Then you have wool/thread count... I think the more expensive suits it's around 140-180 (Spermie probably knows more) or so.

Without getting into too much commentary about all the other options available for a G, I find the best "name brand" suit in the 1K range to be a Boss (although I've bought them for 400-500 Euro). Its well fitted, the material is usually satisfactory and the stitching is usually well above average.

We can get into a discussion until the cows come home whether Italian or Saville row is better fitting or higher quality but at the end of the day its a Jag vs. Benz discussion ie personal preference and for the record I'm a Benz man.

Any so-called "custom" clothing from countries such as Vietnam, India, Thailand, or Taiwan is 100% pure unadulterated SHIT. The tailoring standards are shoddy to say the least; the fabrics are almost always synthetics (i.e. polyester), and the styling is . . . well, let's put it this way: are any of these countries famous for their fashion runways? A made to measure shirt (not custom or bespoke but made to measure only) will set you back $200 in Canada. So what can you expect for $200 for a so-called custom suit from such places as Vietnam, India, Thailand, or Taiwan?
I don't think you can use price as an indication of quality as standards of living vary greatly from there to here. But I did buy a MTM suit while I was in Vietnam and was happy with what I got. I got to pick the fabric, the style and other minor things as well. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a standard suit. But it was good enough for me and I have usually gotten complimented on it whenever I've worn it.

On the other hand, a travel companion bought a suit from a different place in Vietnam and it turned out horribly for him. The tailoring and finishing was quite poor and he was not too happy at the end of it. So I think it really depends on where you're getting it from if you're over there.

Men in suits mmmmmmm...

Find a good tailor in your area. Brand name clothing isn't cut well anymore, Christ, I cannot even get the creases on the trousers to line up properly these days. And the stitching? No matter what you pay the hems aren't done properly. Have you ever seen a Hong Kong finish on store bought clothing?

There are two tailors on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. Both are Italian and very good at their trade. Italian men have a feel for texture and drape...

Besides, the most difficult part in fitting a suit must be the armholes in the jacket....they are so individual and when they fit poorly the hang of the jacket is ruined...spend a little more and have something that makes you look like a million dollars......women love men in suits!

my 2 cents: go for Boss or Canali!

Hey there, thought I'd join in since I love a nice suit & tie.
If dropping $2000 is a little steep, then go for Boss. You can find some Boss suits at places like Harry Rosen for around $800.

If you go to Seattle, check out Nordstrom Rack. They are like the Winners for Nordstrom dept stores. The best 2 are Downtown and the new Southcentre one by SeaTac. Last year Southcentre had a few Boss suits for $400 US! But it's hit&miss with selection & sizes. I bought a Boss shirt for $49 and Seven jeans for $89 or 99.

For Zegna, they have a slightly less expensive line called Zegna Z. (Um, that's less expensive for Zegna—they're still a grand!) The Z line can vary in appearance. Some look more rough/casual. I lucked out and found a Z suit that was more on the dressy side and it was 25% off at the time!

Frankly if you're going over a grand, check out Canali. They aren't as well known as Zegna, but i prefer them. I've never coughed up the $1500-2000 for a Canali suit, but I have several shirts & ties. The shirts are around the Zegna price of $225-280, but their ties are a better value: Canali 125-140, Zegna 180-250!!! And the Canali shirts and ties are both better made in my opinion.
Zegna & Canali shirts are both tailored to a slim to average build. If you're a little bigger try the french brand Faconnable for shirts.

With suits, think about how you'll wear it. Always with a tie: buy a 2-button so it shows a little more shirt & tie. Sometimes/always NO tie: Buy a 3-button.
If you're slim to average, flat front pants are more stylish. If you have a little pudge, you may want to find a suit with pleated pants, but more than a single pleat will date you.
For the jacket, you can 1, 2, or no vents at the back. I prefer the very Italian look of flat front pants, with a 2-button jacket with the side vents (ie 2 vents).

Hey it's all about personal taste! Notice the little details and don't regret spending the most you can afford on a great designer suit.

PS The suits at Moore's are absolute crap. Most are wrinkles waiting to happen if not perma-wrinkled already. And the shape is simply not as nice as a designer suit! If you can't afford a nice suit, wear a just a nice dress shirt & dress pants until you can!

The upside of buying from a place like Harry Rosen—free tailoring for life. Seriously.

PPS 2 fashion tips when wearing a suit. #1 Don't pull out the shirt too much! Just enough so you don't look like Pee-Wee Herman. #2 Learn how to tie a tie! Harry Rosen's website has a printable step-by-step. I go for the Windsor because I like a bigger knot.

PPPS No I don't work for Harry Rosen or any other store!

Wow, I can't believe I just wrote this much!

I just checked out the site and at least they're honest: "We are better quality than Zara but not a Zegna suit."

They say all their suits are custom-made. If that is so, then why is it they already have their suits pre-made for online sale?

Personally, I wouldn't buy a suit from them. Thanks, but no thanks.
I checked the site out. It appears they have (sample) suits pre-made so you know how it might look. But when you place an order, you are suppose to give all your measurements. Apparently, they send you fabric swatch and measuring tapes too.

GO to Harry Rosen or Holts, you can't go wrong getting a suit that suits your body type and fit. You may spend a little more but it is WELL worth it. I have suits that are 14-15yrs old and look just as good as when I bought them and because I don't by trendy suits they are still in style. Change it up with shoes/shirts/ties to achieve different looks.

Store it in a breathable suit bag in a dark well ventilated closet.
