I noticed it a few days ago and also wondered.. I have no idea why they would do that but it looks awful. My friend lives on Seymour st and they actually replaced what little grass there was with more sidewalk (I noticed the same thing on Nelson st) I'm not sure what this city's problem with grass & trees is, but they sure are doing a good job at making sure they get rid of all of it!

As a side note, there are TONS of dogs in the building my friend lives in, and now that there is even less grass, the only place you can find any is pretty much where they all go.. So much so, that my dog would not even go there! After a couple walks where she just didn't want to go, I walked another direction and she went right away. That's pretty sad if you ask me. If a DOG thinks it's too gross to relieved herself...........

I really don't know what they're thinking. This is such a beautiful place, but they're building a city of concrete and highrises without any greenery (sp?). This is supposed to be Vancouver.. to me, when I think Vancouver, I think green. Nope, not anymore I guess.

Kinda like the ugly-ass 'area' (I don't call that a park) at Nelson/Mainland corner by the Starbucks and Yaletown Park highrises? Ugh. The building manager told me the city paid over 1 million for that useless hideous..... 'area'.

Most flagrant waste of precious urban space

In Yaletown, at the corner of Nelson and Mainland streets, there is a park. At least, it is a cleared space with benches and unpleasantly modern art, where one could theoretically eat sandwiches and watch pigeons consume the crumbs. But who would do such a thing? The park is made entirely of a nubbly, moonlike surface, heat-reflecting bleached concrete, erratically dotted with craggy mounds from which thin trees spurt like half-tweezered blackheads. It is about the most uninviting setting imaginable. Yaletown: as you reap, so do you sow.

They cut the trees about a month ago.

The stumps are 4 foot high for safety reasons.
You really can't trip over them at that height.

There was a lot of road work done on Granville during the summer.

I suspect a lot of root damage was done while the road work was done.

A lot less maintenance (leaves) and some of the trees would have died off in the next couple of years due to the root damage.

trees are stupid.

they think they can shed their leaves all over the place, and let their roots spread underneath our roadways just because their "photosynthisis" turns carbon dioxide back into oxygen.

they didnt learn their lesson with the stanley park storm a couple of years back, i dont think mass decapitations will do anything either.

as ugly as it is, im not seeing any homeless people sleeping underneath them anymore. maybe that was the reason

trees are nice in a park or forest.
Alongside of a road, all they do it fill the drain sewers with leaves, so the road floods, and they people on the sidewalks get splashed by trucks

cutting

it's part of a revitalization program of the 'The Strip'.
was featured in VancSun this year. i'm sure one
can google and find facts about it. this was in the drawing
board for years just so you know.

funny thing, they are replacing the cut trees with–
you guessed it- trees!

Speeling Poleece!

If you really don't like trees, move to Antarctica! I guess then you'd have to shovel the snow.
An SP I visited once told me that the best way to keep warm in cold conditions was to strip naked and cuddle... like the penguins:)
I could think of other things to do that generate body heat when naked too.;)

...IS fill... , ...THE people...
And if you don't want to get splashed, wear your umbrella on your hip!

Trees take carbon monoxide and turn it into oxygen for us to breathe. Maybe they are trying to poison everybody in Yale Town.:(
...Yaletown...
And I agree with Harmony. I like breathing. Especially when I'm running (rare) or cycling on a busy street and choke on a bunch of exhaust... Diesel is my favorite flavour.

..."PHOTOSYNTHESIS"...
The homeless people will be given a bus ticket back East and then defrosted, or spun dry in the spring .

...RELIEVE herself... Yes, greenery.
It is a big urban "garden" complete with concrete walkways and pay toilets!

...THEN we have...

anyone know why they cut down all the tries downtown on granville street and left four foot high stumps?
...all the TREES...
They are going to be bar stools for the new urban car-free cafe and patio zone on Granville street. They will ship in and install more when it is warmer.

Perhaps this?
pollard (POL-uhrd) noun

1. A tree cut back to the trunk to encourage a dense growth of new branches.

2. An animal that has its horns or antlers removed or has shed them.

verb tr.

To cut off the top of a tree.

Sorry about the spelling thing. I did a paper once on internet, IM and text message communication, so I think it's funny when I'm reading online posts.
Some of the kids in elementary and high school in the U.S. (where the research was gathered) were actually using abbreviations such as LOL, 2, b, u, b4. Even using Smilies in assignments they handed in to their teachers!
Welcome to the brave new linguistic world of internet communication.
I apologize for being old school... and having too much time on my hands!:D

Scrabble anyone?

Why is everyone so doom and gloom and quick to judge. Life is good!

Vancouver took down a gas station and put in a garden plot at the busy corner of Burrard and Davie Streets in the heart of the West End in Vancouver. i can't wait for spring. Shhhhhh but in the dark of night i'm gonna sprinkle THOUSANDS of wild spring flower seeds on ALL the plots. And extra white daisies for good measure!;)

David Buddle of Prima Properties describes a new community garden located at the busy corner of Burrard and Davie Streets in the heart of the West End in Vancouver. Landscape contractors put the finishing touches on the garden, bolting down public benches and raking soil in the beds as a rainy Halloween evening approaches.

lol, gimmie a break folks. its a typo or a big brain freeze or something, i spent the day working outside alright, it wasn't exactly warm. :p

as for bjhunter.............. what the heck are you talking about? i don't think i've made a recent comment on the canucks. though i do think schnider played a good first game in net, he just didn't have a team do anything in front of him offensively. :)

if they cut them down and are going to replace them with other TREES thats fine. i just thought it looked ugly as hell and was just another casualty of this city selling its soul for the olympics and almighty dollar.

It's not just the trees, they've torn up the side walks in the area as well.

The city is reconstructing the entire street.

They've been doing alot of underground work on Granville for the last year, it appeared to be sewer and plumbing maintenance.

As a result, the road surface is a patchwork.

They were going to have to resurface the road anyways, and as a part of the operation, they're redoing the sidewalks as well.

It looks like they've widened the sidewalk on the south/east side of the street (by about a meter).
