A nice new camera. But I'm not really up on camera info and I'd love to hear suggestions.

I want a camera that can be operated via remote so that I can take sexy photos for you all :)

Point and shoot but hopefully have a setting to switch to manual control also as I am learning a bit about photography right now and would love to be able to play. BUT it needs to take good photos on the automatic setting (especially in low light) because I'm not good enough to trust myself to manually set it properly everytime.

Ideas?

If you are looking for a compact camera that takes great shots with little effort, go for one of the Cannon PowerShots. I have had 2 and both have been great. The newest is the A590is. Good price at $160 plus $20 more for a card.

It does not have a remote, but has a timer so you can set it up and it gives you about 10 seconds to get into the shot.

It also has a number of manual setings that you can adjust, or just set to auto.

Camera?

Is the remote a definite requirement? Most point and shoots do not have remotes; they mainly have timers to let you run into the photo.

Low light requirements definitely pushes you into the realm of digital SLRs. And they have remotes. Most have on-board flashes, auto and program modes, and are pretty small if size is an issue. The downside will be cost.

yes I definitely want a remote. I already have a good basic camera with a timer. But ten seconds is not enough to run and get into a relaxed looking pose. I don't mind paying more obviously but it needs to have a fully automatic setting as I do not know much about lighting, etc.

Well, if the remote is what you need, then you likely have to look at buying a digital SLR, and the remote that will work with it. Some of the older point and shoots had remotes available, but as far as I know, none of the current ones have it as an option.

Unfortunately, it'll be a little more expensive buying a DSLR, plus lens, plus remote (I'll assume you have a tripod).

My best advice would be to go to a real camera store like Henrys or something local, and talk to them. Find out which models have a remote available (wired or wireless). I'm not saying you have to buy the camera from them, but it's better than talking to the guy at futureshop who's desperate to make a sale, and will say anything to get you to buy it. Besides, they aren't likely to have the necessary remote in stock. Buy the camera at the best price available, and the remote from the camera shop.

Okay thank you I will try this! I didn't realize it was that uncommon. I used to know a lot of amateur girls who had websites and took their photos this way so I thought this feature was more common than this :)

Easier way...

Katlyn,

I suspect alot of ladies have somebody take the photos for them, or set the timer. It really isn't that hard. The nice thing about digital is you get to try, and try again at no cost. So even if it takes you a day to get enough shots you like, you still save yourself the money. If you're only going to do this infrequently, it might be worthwhile.

Or do what I do; borrow the equipment you need from a friend.

I have a sony camera that hooks up to the tv, I use that to take pictures of myself since it acts as an external monitor of sorts, just set up the shot, start the timer, get your ass in frame before the timer is up and you're good to go :)

My 2cents, you should check if whatever remote your getting is compatible with that camera cause that remote only works with specific Canon digital SLR cameras. Best thing to do is just goto a pro stores like leo's cameras, kerrisdale cameras, or broadway cameras and ask if any digial cameras have remotes or the option to buy one. My old pentax 35mm camera had one button infrared remote; came in handle for those group pics.
