question about travellers cheques

According to my people, NOBODY uses travellers cheques any more.Where's the most affortable place to buy them
Debit and credit are way handier.

I've been to HK twice using travelers checks lately. Even in a city so world class as Hong Kong some banks will take them some wont! Its all about location. If youre in a residential area like Wong Tai Sin or Lam Tin its hit or miss. But go to area with business people, tourists like Central, Jordan, Tsim Shi Tsai and you should not have any problems. Still not all bank will take them not matter how high class or modern the area is. One Bank of China will accept it and another wont. Its not uniform as banks in the states or Canada.
Some banks will limit your max transaction a day and its a small limit so you might have to make a Pain in the ass trips if you spend a lot. Plus you have to pay the same fee all the time! I suggest you just take cash to Hong Kong too much trouble looking for a place thats accept them.
And bank lines in Hong Kong are long compared to here, but still no where no near painful as banking in China where its so SLOWWWWW! Its like everyone has to tell their life story to a teller there. I once spent 45-1 hour in a Shenzhen trying to cash traverlers checks during 3pm busy time. Damm!!

If you are using the credit card, then you are fine, however with ATM's you will get dinged for surcharges from your bank when you get back home. When I was in Australia for a month, I used the ATM twice and came back to $10 in surcharges, plus another $5 in non RBC ATM charges. Plus, you never know when you will end up in a place where they have no electronic means.
Plus with travellers cheques, you can get them replaced if you lose them. You get rolled for your wad of cash in your pocket then you are S.O.L.
wouldn't bother with travellers cheques. too much of a hassle. Just bring cash LAG. Went to HK last summer, nothing better than carrying cash. no hassles with banks and surcharges. You can probably bring CAD if you wanted. There were people that would exchange CAD for HKD on the spot. If you decide to do that, shop around because their rates vary from one person to the next.
I carry cash, travellers cheques and credit cards when i travel as \i currently am (in Cairo, EG i'll write a brief pooning repor when i get back but its been awesome). I buy them at my bank (CIBC) for a close to nothing commission (i think under $10 per thousand) the security and safety of having them is well worth it and are replaced instantly just about anywhere in the world. They are usually issued by AMEX and i always buy in US$ as it is more widely accepted worldwide.
