Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh?

It might be a simple task to some but there are many highly intelligent men out there that don't spell properly or use grammar properly.

After all math is the only truly efficient and accurate language. One example is Binary. Of course you can compile this and make it even more efficient.

What a messy language system indeed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonological_history_of_the_English_language

However it is forever changing and adapting.

There is now a wide spread movement to compile the language. Example ROFL.

That is just progress.

However many do not want there culture to change/improve maybe for artistic reasons.

I have run into many ignorant people that feel they are so superior because of there grammar and spelling. Then when you pay attention you find their grammar and spelling to be wrong also.

Your thoughts?

The first thought that springs to mind is that there is a difference between "there" and "their" that apparently you haven't completely figured out yet. But one out of three isn't bad, I suppose. :)

Nice run-on sentence.
No, Mr huge penis not so huge brain guy this would be an example of a run on sentence but then I wouldn't expect you to know the difference so I suppose I really shouldn't be surprised that you're unable to distinguish one from the other, should I?

it's important

No matter what is appreciated today, there are things that remain forever... Decide for yourself what is important.

Poor spelling and grammar drives me nuts because they are fundamentals of good communication. It seems a bit foolish when people dismiss these errors and jump on the grammar/spelling 'police' in forums. If you can't spell worth shit you've missed out on an elementary stage of growing up and I'm going to assume you're a couple notches below me.

I understand the frustration when a thread seems hijacked due to grammar/spelling 'cops' and an argument ensues about who's right and who's wrong. Perhaps an idea is to take a measly two minutes, look up the word/phrase/structure for the correct form and LEARN from it. In the very least, if you keep getting called out on your stupid-ass writing skills, then give up and move to a site where it's tolerated. Idea #2: Proof-read.

the english language is dead

you do realise that the word of the year for 2007 (according to Merriam-Webster dictionary) is "w00t". Thanks to leet speak english is now on a ever changing path to a more global language

http://www.m-w.com/info/07words.htm (my only gripe with merriam-webster is they dont seem to fully understand leet speak, but atleast they get the concept out to the masses)

Initially I make the same judgement of people but in some cases change my mind. Anica Green is an example, I first thought WTF is wrong with this girl but something shone through the poor spelling. If she ever comes out of retirement I would pay extra to have her whisper misspelled words into my ear throughout the session.:)

I agree. I realize that many of those who are devoid of such skills will fight the good fight, claiming spelling and grammar mean nothing and the English language is "evolving" (by which really they mean devolving into gibberish). However just because they didn't pay attention in grade school and develop half decent communications skills doesn't mean they have a valid point.

My sentiments exactly! There's an exception to every rule and she proves it. I initially glossed over her posts because of her atrocious spelling but it didn't take long to realize Anica has more on the ball than 98% of the people who post at this site. I now read any Lounge thread in which she posts. It may sometimes be tough sledding but the pearls of wisdom are always worth the effort.

I personally just view the English language as an art form/skill. Just like anything in life, doing/using is one thing, but being proficient and excelling is another.

Example #1. Lets replace the fluency of English with dancing. Running onto the dancefloor and flopping around and attempting to do what, at best, looks vaguely like the "running man" going backwards, could be considered as dancing, but comparing to someone who actually knows how to dance, there's a huge difference.
Example #2. Cooking. Mixing together anything random inside your fridge and popping them in your pot and cooking will not turn out or taste as good as fine cruisine at some 5-star restaurant.

This topic partially reminds of a quote in Hamlet. I don't really remember how the quote went, but the vocabulary used by the nobilities and the commoners is totally different (but maybe someone who knows the play better than help me out). Taking that concept to heart, I'd rather speak more eloquently (like the nobility), than dumb-ed down, "durr... durr... me bread good eat", (commoner) :D

As far as my opinion of the evolution of English, everything is going shorthand, such as: lol, rofl, wanna, etc. until eventually people will be using pictograms again (low end). After that people will found out it's pretty hard to explain epistemology when all your can do is write/draw dogs, cats, moon, etc. :D

In an online forum - where the written word is our predominant means of communication - spelling, grammar, punctuation and diction are some of the most fundamental factors in creating the image or impression we wish to convey to others. Just as showing up to a face-to-face meeting unwashed, unkempt and slovenly dressed is liable to create a poor physical impression, haphazardly spewing unedited drivel on a board portrays much the same virtual image.

Sure, I understand that written communication may not be everybody's forte. For some, English is a second or even third language. Others may have linguistic processing disabilities such as dyslexia or aphasia. Saying that, it is all too easy to use features such as online translators or spell checking software. Arguably these applications have their limitations (such as in identifying homonyms), but they do produce notable improvements. To the people who feel that editing is altogether too time consuming, I say this: We all have unique weaknesses that require some extra time and effort to mitigate. Some people have to spend more time putting on makeup in the morning; some people have to spend more time with the dictionary. That's life! :)

I've been writing for years now, professionally.

I understand, and can appreciate that theer aer thoes that dotn nede evreythnig in odrer to reda thnigs, :) but also appreciate the aescetics of a properly spelled, grammatical review.

If we can discourse on a proper, comfortable and considerate level, I think it brings more to the discussion than a mis-pronounced, illiterate and inconsiderate rant. Although it's still readable, is it pleasant? No.

I tend to also discredit the reviews I read by less literate people, to a certain extent. I think literary content reflects probable veracity.

Jodie, you were bang on with your comments. Kudos to you.

Two cents, cheers, and have fun!
