Im currently working 60 hours a week and been doing this for a few years now. I remember a time when im pulling 80 a week and basically passing out while im at work. Sure there's people who will say oh just poon less or spend less. But christ sake Im down by yaletown and they have these 1/2 a mill one room apartments. My relatives make me angry saying stuff like this generation is lazy. They baught their homes when things where affortable and now things are just insane. Christ sake not sure how people who are just in their early 20's and graduating from university can ever afford to buy.

i'm currently working 7 days a week and have been for about a year and half and its still not enough. i can't see myself owning a home in my lifetime at this rate. min. 8 hour shift per day. pretty fuckin crazy if you ask me.
I've inherited a small place but at the same time im not lazy. I dont like to be one of those people who inherit a place and sit on their butts. Have some friends who are still living at home cause life is rough in bc. Im in my mid 30s and my savings would probably buy a crappy apartment somewhere in surrey
Right now im socking money away for retirement and have plans to move elsewhere. Seen some listings in mexico and thailand 50k for a big place. My dreams of having a huge house is impossible here in bc. I dont like being ripped off.
yep for the past week and a half i've been doing straight 11 1/2 hours a day.
my next day off is christmas... but if the store was open i would probably work on that day too to earn the extra.

I have 7 days off this xmas so guess im lucky. Sometimes i get jealous of some of these sp cause they can make 100.00 bucks just for a nude massage with a hj. Dont get me wrong im sure they have a right to charge anything they want.
I've often wondered how people starting out in Vancouver these days manage it. Even in the 80's, when I worked in Vancouver and had a pretty good salary, we had to go way out of the city to find a place that we could buy. Fortunately we own our house free and clear now, because if we had to buy it at its present market value we couldn't afford it, even way out here.
My parents bought their place in North Van in the 50's, on an unskilled labourer's salary. They had the mortgage paid off in 2 years! Now, I could not afford to live in the neighbourhood where I grew up, even though I have tremendous adjantages of education and job skills that my old man didn't have.
I think it must be quite discouraging for a young adult starting out in Vancouver now, unless their career is unusually lucrative.

This reminds me of the time im in the emergency ward at VGH and while waiting i heard a Dr complain about how expensive real estate is.
It's tough for many people to swallow when they see rich asian investors buy their kids these overpriced single room apartments on yaletown. Im sure you've seen them around in town in their mercedes.
this is a crazy thought but we should almost consider doing what mexico does in limiting the types of real estate foreign nationals can buy as well as its location. give our citizens a run at it first. (and i'll stop you now for all you over sensitive types that will scream racism. by "our citizens" i mean anyone that is a canadian citizen regardless of ethnicity.) i see nothing wrong with taking care of our own once in a while.
Great idea but i dont think it'll ever happen. The higher the real estate pricing probably the more taxes people pay. Im sure the govt loves that stuff. I've lucked out inheriting a place to stay but i have friends who just hate living in bc. I know they can move but where?

LAG, unless you feel bound to this lame shithole city; it sounds like you need to pack up and move. Maybe try Kelowna or Vernon in BC. If looking outside BC, the rest of the country is much colder in the winter. Calgary is pretty expensive now, about 75% of Vancouver, but jobs pay more...so overally you would win. THey dont have a junkie problem like here, people are friendlier, better looking women and this city is very very clean.

You can buy a 3 bedroom townhome in a nice neighbourhood in decent shape for $140,000 - you can buy a house for $250,000
There's also a lot of young attractive women that live there.
If I wasn't doing so well here, I'd move to Ottawa in a heart beat.

3) Cities to expensive? Work online and move to Winterpeg the 'City of Women' - too cold to do anything but stay in and screw. Pick up a house there for $50k fixer upper - but get SOMETHING so when the speculators discover it...

Id rather live in a car in Vancouver than live in the cold weather like winnipeg or ottawa. I remember walkin on the sidewalks and lost feeling with part of my face
Although Calgary's housing prices are nowhere near as expensive as Vancouver's, the city currently has the highest average rental rate. This is mostly do to the fact that a significant number of greedy apartment owners are hiking up the rents of current tenants to 'encourage' them to move out so they can convert the suites to condo's and sell them for big bucks.
The cold weather here is another issue. Back in BC minus 15 was a rarity, here its almost like a day at the beach. I work outside, and the coldest I have worked in was minus 25 WITHOUT the windchill (with the windchill it was almost minus 35).
But except for the rental rates, the cold, and the fact that half of the drivers here seem to have learned on bumper cars, I love it here. Much less rain, mountains are still close by, HOT women, and plenty of opportunities to advance your career or start a new one.
