Eggs in the microwave

first thing with a microwave is don NOT cook anything in a plastic container. During the cooking process parts of the plastics leach into the food so just use a bowl. Cover the food with a cover (and yes it can be plastic as long as it doesn't touch the food). For simple egg whites start at around 40 seconds and see how it finishes for your particular taste.

I agree with everyone else here...wow what a nice ass!!!

heheh who knows why egg whites explode but when mixed with the yokes they don't. I have some contraption that is supposed to poach an egg in the microwave, and you are supposed to prick the yokes with a fork before cooking. I always assumed that was so the yoke wouldn't explode.

Once I made hot chocolate by heating a mug of milk in the microwave. When the milk was hot and ready, I removed the mug from the microwave and dropped a spoonfull of Nestles Quick in....and the mug erupted in hot steamy foam all over the counter. I read later it was something to do with the milk (can be water too) getting hot enough to boil but the smooth sides of the mug didn't have anything for bubbles to form on (or enough bubbles anyway). But drop the chocolate in and thar she blows!!

Anyways, doesn't help with why the egg whites exploded.

thanks

P.S.

Thanks for the heads up Jodie, I am sure you have saved many of us a cleaning session with our microwaves.

I'll admit it...I had a blond moment a few years ago and put an egg with the shell in the microwave.

The explosion was like a canon and blew the door open. What a F***ing mess!
Canon.. hmm, perhaps not quite a canon musically. It would be more like Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with microwaved eggs. :D

Some ideas

Were the whites from one of those containers of egg whites or from eggs you just cracked? I'm wondering if the just cracked egg whites still have some sort of membrane structure that would cause the water in them to build up pressure as the water turned into steam. Maybe an idea would be to whip the egg whites a little before nuking them.

These are some ideas for poached eggs.

That wiki page is kind of lame. Tells you to boil water, then put the egg in the boiling water, then put both in the microwave. Well if you had the boiling water why the f*ck wouldn't you just put the egg in the pot and cook the damn thing.

I know this does nothing to address your concern... but microwaves should be used very infrequently.

I'm not trying to spread fear or perpetuate a hoax. These little machines can rearrange the atoms in your food.

Even though microwaves are classified as non-ionizing radiation,at sufficient power levels, they can cause ionization such as a plasma.

I can go on .. but I won't bore you. Suffice it to say that if you're going to nuke it just don't use the default "high" setting. The higher the power, the stronger the electric field, and the more damaging it is to nutrients. So, the lower the power, the safer.

:D
I too agree strongly with Bella here...PLEASE don't use them & if you insist, do it sparingly:cool:
I see you have fallen for the usual fearmongering put out by people who have no understanding of the physics involved. Yes microwaves can damage living tissue, but seeing as anythiing you are planning to eat is probably dead anyway, it's not an issue. Perhaps you should have paid more attention in science class :)

Yes, radiation generated by a microsoft oven is within a range of frequencies significantly absorbed by water molecules. But is that all that is going on? See http://www.relfe.com/microwave.html for some basic information. I didn't verify the info, but it's an interesting read.

Maybe I should also try watering plants with microwaved water myself, but the pictures I found online showed that microwaved water most definitely kills plants.

Ultimately, body-based fear has no power over one when one isn't afraid to die :)

Ahhh, who knew microwaved eggs could generate such controversey?

Well, thanks for all the recommendations, science lessons and anecdotes! I will report back after my next (hopefully successful) endeavor. If you don't hear from me, it's probably because I am curled up in the fetal positon on my kitchen floor covered in slimy half-cooked egg whites... ;)

P.S. STOP LOOKING AT MY ASS!! I have brains and a personality too, you know :D:D:D
