To shill or not to shill...

I posted this explanation in reply to a post in the "Yellow Pages" thread. After writing it, I though it might be good on a thread of its own...

A "shill" was a person planted in the crowd by snake oil salesmen who would give false accolades to the product in an effort to entice the crowd to purchase the nostrum.

On perb, it is referred to as a "shill" when one user, usually new, devotes all thier posts to the promotion of one sp. With no other reviews, there is the appearance that the poster is either a) a friend of the sp or b) the sp herself.

Most perbers will look for a confirmation from a trusted long term member to verify the "shill"'s claims. If not verified, someone may TOFTT (take one for the team) and try the "new, bestest sp ever", and post thier review.

In the past, long term members actually used the power of a perb review to entice new sp's into giving them free or discounted service in exchange for a positive reveiw, making the "shill" even harder to spot. Fortunately, that practice seems to have been stopped by exposing the wanna be pimps.

So, if you are interested in sharing more information about your other encounters, good and bad, feel free. It helps us all make our decisions, and gives us a snapshot of your tastes, which may be the same or different from ours, giving us a better gauge on your reveiws.

Don"t really get it but ok then? this quote was for shedevil...not avery!
I was sarcastically referring to the "wannabe pimps". Since you're new here, I didn't expect you to get it. Longer term members will get it, however.

And, bunnies, you still don't seem to understand what rubintugger is trying to tell you. It's OK to have a favourite SP; lots of us do. However, it's not OK to constantly mention her in most of your posts. It makes it look like you're promoting her. Just review her once, perhaps mention her once in a while in response to other members' posts on her, and let it go. And, if you are that SP, then stop shilling yourself.

After looking at Sharla's ad at EC and reading her reviews here, yes I think there are a few shills. One has to wonder if they use a party hat or not in exchange for their shilling.

What do the admonitions re shilling have to do with Sharla or her E-C ad?

The posts on Sharla that were recently deleted were not written by shills; if anything, it was the opposite. Newbies shouldn't accuse long-time members of being shills. Shills are nearly always new members with no posting history.

Very Obvious!

Who shills for who?
Does it matter in the long run?
Nope!
People can read between the lines.
It is so easy to hide behind a screen being a big boy or a girl.
I never realized there was so many review boards across "Canada",until someone informed me.
People must have a lot of time on their hands.
I read my e-mails and https://perb.cc but there is a-z erb.ca.
I always was told it is not healthy to keep things in so therefore I added my .02 cents.
Feels good to get it off my enhanced hard chest:rolleyes:

You mean to say a long time pooner would never shill for a SP, even if some favors were exchanged? The way I look at it, there is no difference between a newbie or a veteran (to put it), if some one is going to shill then they will shill.

I said shills are NEARLY ALWAYS newbies with no posting history. They're usually amateurish and laughable, and easy to spot, and the posters usually disappear after they're called out. As rubintugger mentioned, there have been past cases of long time members trying to promote certain SPs, but they have been rare, and they were exposed long ago.

What I couldn't figure out from your post was what that had to do with the recent posts on Sharla. There was nothing in that thread, before or after the cleanup by BcMod, that resembled a shill review.

Looking at her ad at EC and then reading the glowing reviews of her. To me they weren't adding up.

Shill reviews rarely contain details. and they're usually (poorly) written by previously unknown posters, often the SP's themselves. They're almost always very short too.

If you read the board enough, you'll learn whose reviews are reliable and whose aren't. Also, just because you think a lady won't appeal to you based on her ad, it doesn't follow that others share your tastes. Positive reviews on ladies you probably wouldn't see aren't necessarily shills; they're just written by guys whose tastes differ from your own.
