There is a lot of culture and history in Van
Sirens sirens sirens

Shopping in Van is amazing!
There is a Starbucks on every second corner and one Timmies every 100 blocks

"Every 5th person drives a scooter"

Are you sure they're not motorcycles? I don't see many scooters.
More like 1 in 100. Although I do have a feeling that scooters will come back with a vengeance for city dwellers and those that dont commute or do a lot of highway driving.

Well, maybe not one in five, but there sure are a lot of scooters. Perfect place to drive a scooter. I just bought one this summer and Vancouver would be a great place to have a scooter or motorcycle. Longer riding season than Calgary, thats for sure. Just have to make sure I have rain gear. And the cars. OMG there are a lot of nice classic and muscle cars here in Van.

for another 'adventure' grab a skytrain pass and head out to
NewWestMinster and check out their 'Quay' ... then jump on
the skytrain again and check out the city from an interesting
view ... go all the way to the end of the line and hop on a
seabus (your skytrain pass still good for that) and check
out the Lonsdale Quay in North Van (the seabus terminus
stops right there!)

Its another great way to spend the day ... no car, no traffic,
no parking ... sure, you may get mugged, or worse, but
welcome to Van!

:)

Everybody keeps talking about fireworks tonight. Where is the best place to see them?
Where is your hotel? Ask the concierge if you can see the show from your balcony or patio or the hotel roof if its accessible.

English Bay (Davie and Denman)is the most popular spot but also a ridiculous amout of human traffic down there. If you do go down there, get there early, bring a blanket/chair and keep your booze hidden.

Otherwise, rent a bike or walk over Burrard St. Bridge to Kitsilano (if you drive parking is insane and again get there early if you have a car) and check out Kitsilano Beach at the Northern most point. If you can't see the apartments along side English Bay from your "spot" you won't be able to see the show.

Have fun! It's so beautiful. And rarely to you see soooo many people out on the streets in Vancouver.

So how is this shit hole (in the words of In The Bum) compare to cow town? Can you list some pros and cons for each. I am seriously contemplating moving to cow town (there's a job offer on the table, and I have about a month to decide)?

I know that income tax is lower and there is no PST. That should be reason enough to move. But what about the people, culture, living costs, snow (I am used to Montreal snow, so shouldn't be a problem there), and most importantly the pooning scene?

I wouldn't even try to weigh this one in economic terms, as the old joke goes, "where is the culture in cowtown?"

A-"At the 7-11 in a yogurt tin."

Cowtown is a very conservative town of mostly caucasians with few non-caucasian immigrants, speaking from the perspective of Vancouver. If you want any kind of ethnic food, your choices are few and the food is whited out. If you want to visit a micro or AMP, good luck trying to find one. If you go to the established agencies, you'll be paying Swedish Touch prices. The independant scene is the only thing left there, and the prices are about the same as here if not a little higher. If you are into the street walkers, you might as well go straight to jail first. LE has done a terrific job of pretty much eradicating or controlling almost all forms of prostitution. I daresay Calgary is the model for which Vancouver would love to become with regard to the sex trade. There is no Richmond, no Surrey, a dead Chinatown, no Koreatown, no Japantown, no Indiatown, almost nothing but white collar caucasian on the Northwest, Central, Southwest and Southeast, and blue collar caucasian on the Northeast. Almost any non-caucasians you meet is not going to act very ethnic either. As I'm not a pickup-driving kind of guy who likes to pretend he's a cowboy and wear a silly hat, I find the popular social scene there annoying. You'll meet many Americans living there, and that might bother you if you are Canadian. If it weren't for the booming economy, I wouldn't even consider it myself.

However: it is a very clean town and white collar types who live there all seem to be on a health kick. I stay away from the Northeast, so I don't see much else.

Calgary sounds like the kind of town where a guy goes to find BOREDOM. From GBM's description its sounds like many of the Midwest cities I've been to like Minneapolis, St. Louis, Milwaukee. If youre on business there and want adult action from a AMP or one of those HK rug and tug spas like Blue Sea you got pipe dreams. Thank the Good Lord, the NW has one place that a guy can indulge in pooning and I dont live far from it.
