I've never understood the Harry Potter phenomenon. I've never had an interest in either watching films, or picking up one of the books. Yes it's great kids are actually reading, let alone all of the adult fans, but it's the whole commercial machine behind the book which is disappointing.

I also can't believe JK Rowling is the richest (?) / biggest selling author (?) of all time... (Not Stephen King?)

I do like Emma Watson though...

J.K. Rowling is kinda hot herself.

However, I don't know if she's the best-selling author of all time. I'd figure J.R.R. Tolkien (who wrote a superior wizards and sorcery epic BTW) still outsells her.

From NBC.com at least on Amazon she is...

NEW YORK - J.K. Rowling tops the list. Dan Brown is ranked very high. William Shakespeare just missed out.

It’s Amazon.com’s top 25 best-selling authors.

The online retailer, celebrating its 10th anniversary, announced its biggest sellers Thursday, with Rowling no surprise at No. 1. The “Harry Potter” author was followed by Spencer Johnson of “Who Moved My Cheese?” fame, romance novelist Nora Roberts and “The Da Vinci Code” author Dan Brown.

Rounding out the top 10 were Dr. Seuss, John Grisham, Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien, “Left Behind” novelists Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins and business writer Jim Collins.

Shakespeare was No. 26, one notch below Tom Clancy.

The Seattle-based retailer will unveil its best-selling musicians and movies next week.

The Potter series seems to have a deep universe of characters. Many other books also have a deep universe of characters but they may not necessarily be "compelling" or interesting enough.
JK Rowling's books have transalated well to the big screen so no wonder she's able to outearn authors like Stephen King. :D

off the top of my head i can't think of another instance where
the movies have been as good or better than the books like
in the Harry Potter series ...

even though the LOTR trilogy was good, it was still a bit hokey
at times ... and other than Carrie, which King novel has really
made the same impact on the screen ...

and other than Shakespeare in Love, name one of his writings
that has burnt up the screen ...

I think a couple of the movies based on Mario Puzo's writing are as good or better than the book and far superior to the Harry Potter films. A couple of little films called the Godfather I and II come to mind.

King's The Shawshank Redemption has been ranked amongst the greatest films of all time. I doubt any of the Harry Potter films will achieve that level of acclaim.

Worsened my sickness

Wanted to go to the Chapters party, but I'm sick to the bone! However, being a diehard Potter fan I went at 12:30am and got out of there by 1:00am with a copy of the Deathly Hollows, not a smart move on my part as I spent all day today lying in bed recovering.

well, I did say 'off the top of my head' but you are right ... the Godfather
movies were excellent ...

I haven't read the Shawshank Redemption but the movie is one of
my all time faves ... keep forgetting that it is King's work ...

and no, don't see the HP series as timeless classics or even that
good, but they seem to translate to screen quite well ...

I think the books are still better than the movies. Well at least the movies aren't that bad, not like Eragon.... I really like fantasy so Harry Potter is pretty good. Not the best fantasy series in my estemation, but Harry Potter is not an adult fantasy series. If you are hardcore like me you'll probably like Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" or Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series.

PS- The Lord of the Rings movies are way way better than Harry Potter movies.

I thought about getting the book on day 1,but I spent the amount on groceries.I never read any books and only seen the 1st movie.

If I was a teen,I'll get the book.I rather poon than read.

I'll wait for the movie to come out.
