in an "organic" fashion? My dog and two cats spend a lot of time with me in the back yard, so anything toxic is verboten.

My dogs have taken Heartworm prevention pills for years.
This is what I've been told and read. Heartworm disease is caused by a parasite (worm) that is spread by mosquitoes. The adult form of the worm lives in the heart and pulmonary artery of the dog and as the numbers of parasites in your dog's heart increase they clog up the heart and cause life threatening heart and lung disease. Unfortunately, althought there is a test to check your dog, it can be a silent killer. Many dogs appear healthy until the infestation progresses to a life threatening condition very quickly. Southern Manitoba and Winnipeg are very high incidence areas for Heartworm because of our climate and we have the right species of mosquitoe that carries the disease.
Call your vet tomorrow and I'm sure they will explain it better to you.

Step 1: Align your hand with the mosquito.
Step 2: When it feels right, the timing and alignment is juuuust right, slap it.

Some people use a lot of force. Others, a light slap will do the trick. It just depends on how annoyed and/or pissed off you are at the time. It's nontoxic and not harmful to your pets. Hell, make a game of it. Carry a tally sheet in your back pocket. At the end of the day, compare to your family and friends to see who has a higher kill count. Loser has to sit in the back yard naked that night, surrounded by bright lights to attract the mosquitos. :D

Another good idea is that if you have any still water in your yard, like a pond or pool, drain it or put a fountain in. Still water is a breeding ground for mosquitos. Some cities and towns have bylaws against still water ponds in yards for this reason.

We do a lot of clutching, grabbing, slapping and plain old stomping here in Manitoba, and that's just in general. With regards to mosquitoes our minds have gone mad and we spend much time in glaring helplessly... at the fact that we live where we do. Eh, it's not so bad.

Chopsticks

(1) Buy a copy of Karate Kid
(2) Buy a pair of good chopsticks

That old guy in the movie uses chopsticks to simply grab the mosquito. Make sure you explain to your neighbors ahead of time.

Belair,
living in the mosquito belt also they can be a pest in the summer. Here are some suggestions which I received from a friend. I can't say for sure if any of these work or not but hey, better than getting the "bites".

Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets...Best thing ever used in Canada ..just wipe on and go..Great for Babies too.
**Don't forget your pets! a nice bounce sheet tucked under their collar when they go outside will protect them as well!!

Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October . He said it works. Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Every one he has talked into trying it works on them. Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.).

If you eat bananas, the mosquitoes like you, something about the banana oil as your body processes it. Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitoes will be much less interested.

This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone found (who is in the woods every day), is Vick's Vapo-rub.

Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides.

"Tough guy" Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito repellent you can use is AvonSkin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol. BTW, do not take internally!

One of the best natural insect repellents supposedly discovered is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure Vanilla that is sold in Mexico . It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects.

and finally when all else fails - get a frog!!!

Deet....

I believe in the US one can buy bug spray that is about 95% DEET. That is a tad higher than the 23.5% that exists now in Canada...

Otherwise....The Mosquito vacs (propane powered).. I know they do work...

I use Revolution for heartworm and all parasite prevention. Its two drops on the dog's neck or back and you're covered for a month from just about any parasites. As far as killing the miserable creatures I use a bug zapper that looks like a tennis bat. Its battery operated and provides you with instant gratification when u see the fuckers fry.
