Does anyone here drive a BMW or Mercedes Benz?

Thanks for all the great info guys. A close relative is thinking of buying one of the 2 listed. I know my cars and am planning on becoming a mechanic and Lexus is better in the long run then both of the companies mentioned. I know some Japanese cars are more reliable but they don't have the prestige of the German luxury cars.

I will be driving the vehicle and am prob the youngest perb member(i've never seen an sp). The BMW it is and thanks again for the info guys.

get a real classic machine that's a total head turner and very rare.
Parts are cheap and so easy to replace.

Could you picture yourself in a "71 Super Bee 440 six-pack 4 speed.
Hemi orange and black with the power bulge hood and all the decals
hood emblems and ornaments intact.
You want to roast the tires through four gears. Try this little baby
on for size. Once you been in a Mopar muscle machine you'd never
look at anything else again.

This gem is completely restored through and through for $30.000

Btw, I'm now saving for the latest crate engine Mopar is coming out
with. 540 ci HEMI and it's supercharged. 900-1000 HP.
Either in EFI (literally injected and blown), comes with laptop software
for tweaking all the perameters,
or a really cool looking cross ram intake with a pair of
Holleys on top. But I'd switch those out for the Demon carbs.

The 2007 328i Coupé is one helluva car. 300bhp twin turbo in-line six cylinder engine has been voted best new engine this year.

It can give most cars a run for their money. It is pretty much on par with last year's M3's performance.
Go take it for a test ride, and if you can afford it, you will be one happy driver.

I think you mean the 335i. Yep I'm shopping for one of those, but can't decide between black or silver

I've always wondered about those cars. Don't they have a lot of heavy torque steer? Don't the frames twist easily? Do the insides have to be completely vacated for extra equipment and reinforcement?

Im on 2nd Mercedes ML 350 and I would say reliability is not as good as my other
cheap Japanese car that I was driving while I was in school. There wasnt much to go break
The dealer rate for MB repair/service is not cheap, I believe $100 for 1 hr.

I had an opportunity to drive BMW X5 (V6 and V8)and 5xx series, including the all wheel drive,
Audi A6/Q7 and Mercedes ML550/E320
and I personally liked BMW best.
The test was not just easy drive around a block.
It was driving a set course at an airport, driving and breaking HARD
I was told by the organizer to jam on the gas and "SLAM" on the breaks.
Can you believe I was jeered when my car didnt screech?

BMW X5 (V8) was an amazing vehicle to drive and the best in its class
in my humble opinion. The power and handling was awesome, surprising for its taller stance.
V8 had a lot of power for low end torque to push me against the back of driver's seat.
The 'feel' you get was very responsive, so much that the car and I was like one.

If I had the opportunity to drive all different cars, before I bought my 2nd car,
I wouldnt have bought MB 350.
I bought Mercedes 1st time because I had a tunnel vision to buy ML320
BUT my next car will be a BMW.

MB has very nice ride, softer than BMW, yet perform when it is pushed to the limit.
Mercedes came very close 2nd and Audi wasnt as good as I thought.

MB and BMW has good quality product with some prestige aspect and
if you can afford to drive one, I say... GO FOR IT!!
Since I am still rather younger, I like the younger image of BMW and little alive ride over nice easy driving of MB.

The BMW X5 is one of the best autos I have driven. Great feel, drive & overall quality! Touch wood!

My cousin owns a brand new one of those, and I did get to drive it around town for a day. I gotta say, as much power as it has, the character is still very japanese - which to me means it feels like transportation from A to B - I feel sedated and well rested when I finish driving. But the german cars just drive like a car should - I feel exhilirated, perhaps even tired, but wanting to drive more.

You call it what you want and I`ll call it what I want. Fair enough.
Personally speaking though I`d never own one of those things.
The money you have to pour into them just doesn`t make it worth
while in my book. Plus I`m not into the modern cars persay but when
Chrysler comes out with that 6.1 L Hemi Challenger next year........

Yah they do have heavy torque steer as they were really made for
straight line racing. Totally different from the BMW`s and Merc`s.
The frames are very strong, no need for reinforcement unless you get
into an E or D body which is the pony cars like CHallenger, Barracuda or
the Dodge Dart and only if you put to much power into them then they
need frame connectors or maybe even a roll cage.

You build a very decent 450 to 500 HP motor for any of those and not
have to worry about frame twist.
You`d only have to vacate the interior if you plan on putting in a roll cage
then you can put the upholstery back in.

Go for the Bimmer

I've had a Bimmer for some time now and have had very few repairs to do on it. Very reliable, good on gas, quick, great handling, looks great and certainly cheaper to repair than the piece of shit I had before. I Have been to Brian Jessel's twice in the last year and a half and the cost was a drop in the bucket compared to other mechanics. The hourly rate is like $75 an hour so don't know where the dude earlier got $110. Parts are a little more than other cars but very little more. Example: I replaced the clutch at Brian Jessel when I first bought it for about $800, about $100 more than what the piece of shit's clutch cost. If, however, you're in the habit of crashing your vehicle don't go for a Bimmer. Very expensive to repair or replace cosmetic BMW parts. And yes, ICBC will charge you more to insure it for this exact reason. But if you're a good driver no problem.

All around a very satisfying experience, and ya like GBM said in another post, you get addicted to driving it and it still drives and feels like a new car. It certainly is well invested money.

Think of it this way: you pay a little extra money now for a car that will last probably 20 years if not more, hold its value, looks great and cost you less in the long run in much fewer repairs. I used to go to the mechanic for the other car every 2 months. So think about that.

Have two older model MBs, a 1990 560 SEL with 80,000 kms and a 1990 500 SL with 22,000 kms. Also have a former MB mechanic with his own garage at $50/hr. Love both cars.

The "experts" I talk to tell me that MB quality fell from the late 80s early 90s to now. The engineers lost out to the marketers. When you think that the 90 SEL was about $100,000 and the 90 SL about $125,000 it makes sense. They've tried to hold the price line.......at the expense of their famous overengineering. For new cars, prefer the BMW. For older, prefer the MB.

I bought both out of Japan where there are lots of gently used MB and BMWs. Total cost, about $35,000. They may be the last cars I buy. No duty if they're 15 years old or older. Check it out.

No body buys a Saab anymore, If you must buy used and hose them because they hold no resale value whatsoever. They have a nice sounding stock exhaust is all I will say.
