I'll be travelling to the Vancouver area in a week and would like some suggestions from members on good hotels - both for business and pleasure, if you know what I mean?

Depends on where you want to be and the price range you want to be in. If you are out in Richmond try the River Rock, The Hilton, Marriot, or Richmond Inn. All are reasonably close to the Airport and front desk staff is not overly nosey. Downtown you've got a wider variety, but have found that some of the moderate priced Hotels are more likely to mess with visitors then the higher priced places. Would suggest Pan Pacific, Four Seasons, Waterfront at the high end, La Soleil, Marriott Pinnacle, Delta Suites, or any of the Best Western operations at the moderate end.

I like the best western uptown Hotel Ratings: AAA-3 Diamonds , Canada Select 3.5 Star. It's a very small hotel but rooms are clean and decent lookin furniture. The price is awesome also at 89.00 this time of the year during weekdays and if ur a BCAA member u can pay 79.00(u gotta mention it to front desk before booking).

Downtown Major Chains?
It's been a while since I've lived in Vancouver, so things have probably changed a lot.
Do any of the downtown hotels from the major chains (Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, Westin, etc...) NOT require card key access to their elevators?

Marriot, Westin, Delta, Holiday Inn Broadway, Sheraton Wall Centre Tower 2 & Opus
some or no floors secured:
Sutton, Pan Pacific, Fairmonts, Four Seasons, Holiday Inn Downtown, Coast Plaza, Crowne Plaza, Sheraton Wall Centre Tower 1, Metropolitan, Le Soleil, Wedgewood
If it's an option, always appreciated when the client asks to meet for cocktails in the bar first otherwise, try to get something organized in your room..i remember one client had all the supplies for fresh lemon drop martinis and i also I remember one faulty towers kinda nite when i brought a luvly bottle of prosecco but forgot my bottle opener..we had to call 3 times to have one delivered & didn't get it til the end. Had lots of fun regardless but believe me, just like a good scout, pays to be prepared.
NB: Westin Grand has a mini bar set up that James Bond would approve of.
Agreed. I've always liked the Century Plaza. Always good prices. Admittedly, I haven't been there for about a year, but when I was last there, they had reno'd the lounge and changed the pub into a nice restaurant/lounge. A friend of mine was there a few nights ago and complained that the room he was in was "old" in style and look, especially the kitchenette. Of course, you're there for the bed and not the kitchenette
I also recommend Century Plaza if you are not looking to play hot-shot but still get a decent room that most ladies wont have a problem visiting

Le soleil is my fave it is so cute with European Flavour. They are not nosy and even have little emergency packs in their hounour bar. (condoms, lube etc).
Stay away from Crown plaza on Georgia, they actually escorted my up to a clients room, knocked on the door to make sure. The Bayshore also does this after a certain hour.
RiverRock has very nice penthouse suites with Jacuzzi's but you are looking at upwards of 1200 for the night. I have never had a problem at River Rock with Elevators or the front desk.

Holy Shit $1200 a night. That damn well better already come with an SP.
I did find rooms (finally) with Jacuzzi tubs but I have a hard time justifying $400 - $500 a night for a room I might be in for 5-6 hours a day.
I seem to always fall back on the large chain hotels. Decent price and you know what to expect. No surprise shit hole with bed bugs and roaches.
