Thx Sdw

For giving the board a brief but albeit real picture of what mental disorders can be like. Panhandling, self-talking, crazy-people out there on the streets don't choose to be that way... we as a society aren't taking care of each other, as much as we have advanced, we still have no clue how to help the mentally ill.

Social assistance as far as I am concerned is ONLY for the severely handicapped (which includes mental disorders) and those who have just found themselves in a tough rut. In the long run, any able-bodied and employable person who is living off social assistance is not only hurting our welfare system but also themselves. Life is a struggle, pure and simple... nothing comes easy.

I would expand your list of the people that we must provide social assistance for.

Agreed - The Handicapped. However, some limits. We shouldn't be encouraging people to self-inflict a handicap. I don't view drug use as a disease that is no one's fault. I don't view alcoholism as a disease that is no one's fault.

Agreed - Temporary Assistance. However, some limits. There must be a path out. We should provide education for those that through bad choices didn't finish school. Now that they understand the consequences they should be provided the opportunity to correct their mistake. We should provide financial education for those who don't understand how the system works so that in future they know how to operate in our system.

We must provide financial support, education and medical assistance to those who are escaping abuse. When we provide no option other than survival sex or theft for a person to survive we create additional generations of people with the same problems and the same effect on society.

We accept refugees into this country. I assume this is to make us feel good. How can anyone drive past a refugee who has been shuffled into the DTES and feel good? We owe these people the Language Training, Education and Financial Training to be able to operate in our society. We owe them support for the first couple of years while they assimilate into our society.

For greater clarity. There is a difference between an immigrant who has the skills and education to enter this country and a refugee who possesses neither the skills or education and is allowed in because it makes us feel good.

We need to decriminalize drug use and prostitution. Take away the need for Dealers and Pimps. Make the Heroin user buy their drug at the Pharmacy the way they did when Bayer first started selling it. Make Cocaine the same way it was when it was an ingredient that provided zing to soft drinks. Taking the money and mystery out of these drugs removes pretty much all of the negative problems they cause. Use the Australian or Dutch model for prostitution. Legal as long as it is done indoors. Required regular medical treatment.
