With more SPs refusing to communicate if you're using a texting app, I'm considering getting a burner phone specifically for this hobby.

I obviously don't need much, just a basic phone and ideally a pay as you go type plan, if those even exist anymore.

Anyone go this route, what are the best deals out there etc?

Speakout from 7/11 was such a perfect plan pay as you go. It closed down. I then switched to Lucky moblie which is $19 per month unlimited in north america and it is working fine. I use it only for texting but you can also phone. Any used phone will do.

Telus still sells flip phones, with pay-as-you-go or monthly options. If you go to a Telus outlet, they may not have any basic flip phones out on display, but will likely have them in the back if you ask.

Could you not use an eSim and have a different number instead of getting a completely new phone?
This is what I'd suggest as well unless the OP specifically wants a separate device (depending on situation sometimes you just don't want texts with SPs going to the same device your "real life" texts go to).

Just about every new phone takes a real sim and esim and can have 2 numbers on it at the same time. Make the monthly your secondary and change your settings so you don't confuse it with your normal number

I think this is what I will do. Seems like my phone will support multiple profiles as well so I can just create a separate profile and phone number on one phone.

I believe that Fongo still functions as a texting app when you message providers. I don’t mind using a real phone number, but there are a lot of scammers and unethical people who can access your real name, address, and location from your number.
I’m not that desperate to use my real phone number. Email or a text app works fine for me—if they don’t want to see me because of that, I respect their decision. I’m sure most providers don’t use their real numbers anyway, so why should clients have to? Privacy is important to everyone, not just providers. To each their own.

You set it up online and can buy the esim online from kodoo. Enter what ever name you want to go as. Pick your number and go

I wish it was this easy.

This is the kind of texting app that many SP’s don’t like and won’t respond to. Yes it’s a local number but there are ways to find out if it’s an anonymous app, SP’s use those methods, and will ignore or block your number. They have their reasons and I’m not here to start an argument.

Hence the conversations about second phone options.

I use an 8 year old iPhone with a Chatr plan for London drugs ($149/year plan). You can give them all fake information, and use the email that you use for this hobby. You get a real phone number, unlimited texting, at least 30 GB of data and you can put it in a beat up phone case and store it in drawer of your toolbox (if you have a partner (and a toolbox)). I put mine in airplane mode and turn it off when I’m not using it. That way if someone finds it and turns it on, they can’t turn off airplane mode and see that you have a cellular connection, which could lead to questions…
