I used to use Z library ,with a VPN.
Now I don't know how downloading works. Is it free? A limit on the number of books that can be downloaded? Do I have to sign up? Do I have to make a donation to download?

You can still use it for free. I think it limits your download speed and overall downloads per day without signing up/making a donation.
