Does anyone know what is happening to Speakout wireless? It looks like it might be shutdown at the end of August? I received a text telling me to move to Lucky Mobile instead.

If that is the case, what are people doing for burner phone service?

I just use Chatr. Took an old phone to superstore and it cost me about 20 bucks for a Chatr Sim card and setup. I paid cash with no ID needed. They do ask for information but I just gave them fake info and there was no issue. Now I just buy a top up card from 711 and I'm good to go.

Rogers is getting out of the prepaid arena, that's also going to affect their MVNO's too. Chatr, Lucky, and Public Mobile are your best options for pre-paid, yet monthly fees. I'd recommend the cheapest option.

Thanks I’ve been looking for a carrier who still does PAYG to replace the 7-11 one. Were you able to keep the number you’ve had from Speakout?

Damn. I wish there were another provider that uses the same model as Speakout.

I'll probably go for one of those yearly plans from Freedom or Chatr...

Does Speakout actually say anywhere they are shutting down? The 3G network is being phased out, but according to that FAQ at Speakout it looks like they are just transitioning to a 4G network. Impossible to get through to Speakout to actually ask a real person.

That's what I thought. I have a 4 G phone that is running 3G. There is no way to change the network in the settings, so I'm hoping it will just update to 4G automatically.

Typical ambiguous spin and dumping users to Lucky Mobile. They buy bandwidth from Rogers who is nixing 3G. Don't expect Rogers to sell them 4G bandwidth to keep their business model alive. All carriers' so-called "prepaids" are now merely the oldtsyle monthly-fee plans.

Speakout doesn't have 4G sim cards and it will be expensive to become existent. they may charge you $15 - $20 in order to survive for the sim card.

So that's why they're dumping customers off to Lucky. Problem is, I don't use the phone enough to justify a monthly plan, and Lucky doesn't seem to have a pay as you go option.

I would get the prepaid yearly plan from any of the options I mentioned, even cheaper sub-brands you can find. The main thing is no ID required and paying in cash!

So, without a specific 4G sim my phone becomes useless?
I’m curious about this too. My burner is an old iPhone 6 which can handle 4g. I read the chatter on Reddit and people were thinking you’d be fine if your phone supported 4G.
I think this is happening because support for 3G networks is being phased out later this month. I’m going cross my fingers and hope because you lose whatever balance you have with speakout if you switch over to another provider (and the other provider wants to sell you monthly or annual plans).
