But our dollar will nose dive and the US dollar will go up.
Ladies touring to the US will make huge money with the exchange. Not sure about stringent border vigilance though. Anyone getting busted can expect perma-bans.
The Canadian dollar has already been falling in relation to the US dollar. One thing all the pissing and moaning about the Bank Of Canada's high interest rate glossed over is how much the inflation crisis was global, the US central bank also keeping a high interest rate to tamp down their inflation. Therefore, the BoC until very recently did not lower our interest rates unless it was headed down in the US too. But if people notice that since the last two BoC cuts did not get matched by cuts by the US central bank, the Canadian dollar has fallen relative to theirs.

As you say though, our lovely ladies will have to be careful if they go down there. (However, if US tourists want companionship up here, the words "US dollars accepted at par" will I'm sure be gladly spoken.)

In all seriousness, Kamala had most of the media behind her, Hollywood, big tech and yet she still lost.
So turns out that 'Orange Man Bad' might make for some good sound bites but it's not such a great platform to run on when the vast majority of Americans have struggled economically over the last 4 years.
Like I said from the beginning, I'm no big fan of Trump (tons of flaws) but The Dems need to look in the mirror and devise a new strategy going forward if they want to give themselves a better chance in the future.
Speaking of which, have you ever head of "The Beyonce Curse" ?

2016 - Hillary Clinton has Beyonce get up on stage with her, then loses the election.
2020 - Joe Biden campaign, no Beyonce appearances, and he wins.
2024 - Kamala Harris has Beyonce get up on stage with her, then loses the election.

"But how? It's Beyonce , the Queen Bee - she's popular!" ask all the Dems who think this sort of celebratory endorsement actually helps their chances.
It doesn't. It might actually harm them, and I don't think they get why...
How many ordinary people would ever get to hang out with Beyonce, or talk to her, or even afford paying money to look at and listen to her over a long distance?
So does it generate feelings of admiration to know that the likes of Harris or Clinton get that special privilege? Nope - it is just a reminder to the common people of a segment of society which they will never get to be part of.

If you like this theory, spread it. I do not know where I first heard it, but when Kamala Harris did the Beyonce thing this time around, it sure did look like a sign the Dems were not learning from past mistakes.

So long Cackling Kamala. It's almost like we never knew ya.
You know who is really loving it, probably tossing back multiple mai-tais today in celebration? Tulsi Gabbard. :devilish:

i'm going to suggest that any tariff that happens will be negligible and symbolic only. Trump has his presidency and now doesn't give a fuck about the working class. he will protect the markets and the markets will not like tariffs.

The Canadian government would be wise to work hard on reminding them that we are not China or India and not undermining their economy to benefit ours. (It's actually been the other way around in these agreements like NAFTA and CUSMA, but the Yanks will never acknowledge that whether D or R.) Make a cordon around North America, if need be. (Despite China, the #1 and #2 trade partners of the US are still Canada and Mexico; it is only natural because it is easier logistically.)

I think people also forget how protectionist Biden was and how much Harris intended to be. The trend towards offshoring production & jobs got discredited pretty hard during the COVID supply crisis, and for both Canada and the US, relations with China and India under their current leaders has been increasingly testy. There is more and more talk of how it leaves us not only economically vulnerable but strategically (as in war-related production). So all that points to diminishing openness of trade & markets.

So Canada better get busy on exploiting those feelings in the US to our advantage, that Canada's strategic cooperation vs. certain Asian powers depends on us not getting fucked out of our trade here in north America. That is how to play hardball with them.

Some of those States were less than 10k difference in votes , and according to even Trump there was cheating in PA - why not in other places too?

I'm suprised the Dems would concede so fast ,even if it turns out to be a fair election, against a known grifter/subverter. Wouldnt be my strategy.

It's funny to think that people think Trump will be good for the economy, obviously ignoring how badly he fucked it up last time. The only reason it even started off well for him, was because he was able to surf off of Obama's accomplishments. I think his incompetence will be on full display this time.
That is such a tired trope. One President "surfing" off of the economic prowess of the previous administration.

The only real lesson for Canada and the rest of the world is to make sure we never ever let the Americans get their hooks into us, never let them influence (control) our politics, economy, media, or military from outside, or anything else that would degrade & mutate us to be more like them.

Countries do not have friends, they have interests, and Canada's leaders need to grow the fuck up and defend ours.
Yes! Well said.

It's not really a trope? Republican presidents always screw up the economy, and leave it to a Democrat to repair. And the first year of a newly elected president's administration is literally just running on the budget put in placer under the previous administration.

Obama left Trump a great economy. Trump didn't pass much of any legislation or do much of anything of major note, leading up to covid. All of the economic trends started off during Obama's tenure. That is a fact. He rode that wave, until COVID came along, at which point his incompetence was on full display. He called it a Democrat hoax, insisted it would just magically go away in the spring, and didn't have much of any real federal response to it at all. He ended up, true to form, completely wrecking the economy, and leaving it to another Democrat to fix. Yet again. And if he had even pretended to be halfway competent, he could have and should have won a second term, to oversee the recovery. But he was one of a small handful of recent one term presidential failures.

And this time, he's not inheriting a super strong economy, like he did the first time. So we'll once again get to see his incompetence on display for all to see, right from the beginning.

Some aspects of economies, do indeed bleed over from past administrations.
Some aspects are global and can not truly be attributed to any administration.

Inflation was already on its way down, and Donald will almost certainly claim credit.
I do not believe it is his to take, but nor do I believe that Biden deserves this acclaim.

Trump tariffs are going to hurt BC bad.
Lumber and coal might get hit.
Auto workers in Ontario.
Trump will tear up NAFTA and the auto pact.
Anybody exporting to the US better be worried.
But our dollar will nose dive and the US dollar will go up.

Apparently Pierre Poilievre will be Prime Minister next year.

It will be fun watching someone as ill-equipped as him deal with all of the mayhem

It might be wise to move a good chunk of your investments to US$ assets while the CAD$ is still above 50 cents.

It is also possible that Poilievre may be good for this country.
If for no other reason than Donald may find him more likeable than our current prime minister.

EDIT: Sometimes we just get what we deserve.

I don’t think PP is in charge of anything.
He’s a puppet for Harper and the business council.

I should have exchanged all my cash yesterday but who really knew what was going to happen. Not enough certainty to risk anything really.

The only way Trump would find any PM likeable is if he was willing to give Trump everything he wants.

I think this Poilievre shit show could happen because people these days are willing to vote against their own best interests.

Alternatively, by the time we have elections, things down south could be going so horribly wrong, that it would serve as a best example of what not to do?

My tea leaves have crumbled, so I can no longer read the future....
The only constructive thing any of us can do is to wait and see, otherwise we are no different than those old dudes on the street corners with their plackers stating the end is near which accomplishes nothing.

Feels somewhat surreal to see Trump win.
But I can't say I'm surprised.
I don't know much about Pierre Poilievre.
But I hope he doesn't turn out like Trump. He's the next PM for sure.
Cuz no way Trudeau and the liberals winning the next federal election.

Trump ran up another trillion in debt in his first term? and people are voting for him because of "the economy" Fuck.
In much the same way that George W inherited a Bill Clinton economy, which was booming, and turned into a war debt shit show.

No. Trump ran up $8 trillion of debt in 4 years.

His personal debt is now almost $2 billion. Guess how he'll raise the money to pay that off.

Well true to my word. I recorded and watched The View today and the roundup was pretty much of concession. Except for Sunny Hostin who surprised me with her remarks. About where the fuck does a convicted felon get to be the President? She was saying that on any job application there is a box to tick which asks if you have a criminal conviction. If you tick it you are pretty much disqualified. She was the only one who expressed fears about mass deportations. Rounding up people and putting them in detention camps. Stacking the supreme court with hand picked judges and the loss of basic civil rights promised by the orange turd.
