International student rule changes

As an immigrant, here is my viewpoint irrespective of this hobby -

So I started my journey in Canada as an international student. I came here with one goal which is to settle here permanently and to do that I chose the path of a 4 year professional degree from a well known legitimate university. I graduated with good grades and internship experience and got a job in my field which allowed me to apply for PR under Canadian Experience Class and set me to my path to citizenship.

Unfortunately, many students coming here do not come with the goal of studying. They are instead here for working and student visa is just a way in for them. There are so many private colleges that you might have not even heard of nowadays. The students attending these colleges are taking advantage of Canadian study permits and I don't like this and will never support this. Unfortunately, though these same students (mostly from India) take up minimum wage jobs that keep this society running, think Walmart, tim Hortons, gas stations, uber, etc. So completely banning them might not be that effective cause not only do they work and keep society running, they pay taxes, pay rent and the major thing is that they pay very high tuition fees so they do put in a lot of money into our economy. On the other hand they also put a stress on our rental market, Healthcare ans resources in general so I am not sure what the fine balance is here.

Since you asked about this hobby, I am assuming you were referring to Asian providers who probably also come here on study permits and I am also against this as what they are doing is still illegal. They aren't paying taxes, they are using their study permits as an excuse for working here and to me that's not fair. But if we ban them then there is less choice and less competition so maybe higher prices.

This was my opinion/rant on study permit but there is a whole new discussion about immigration through the PR route which is also at a rise and has been out of control recently. We definitely haven't balanced the needs of current people v/s bringing in new people and have failed terribly in this.

Our economy needs people so I am not against immigration but we also need to make sure our infrastructure can handle all new additional people and that we have enough resources available for everyone which we clearly don't as we lack houses, lack doctors, etc.

There are some local SPs who definitely file their returns and pay taxes. Do they declare all their earnings is a different question.

But the difference is that the work permit for a international SP on a student visa explicitly says that you can't work in sex work (atleast it said that when I got my work permits a decade ago). So not only are they working against what the provisions in their work permit say, they also aren't paying their taxes because if they did then they would be caught easily for not following the requirements of their permit.

Not that this should descend into the cesspool of economic policy, but here’s my not fully formed take while nursing a whiskey, with the caveat that I know shit about economics.

I’m all for reducing student visas. In recent years it seems it’s nothing more than a scam by these private “colleges” to separate desperate parents in 3rd world counties from their hard earned dollars. Ethics aside, the injection of all of these students distorts our economy in a number of ways.

It artificially depresses wages by injecting below-market workers into the labor market. It could be argued that they are doing jobs no native Canadian would want to do. But this is a bit of false economic logic. No Canadians want to do these jobs (Tim Hortons, McDonalds etc) because the wages are too low to live on; but the wages are too low because students are willing to take less to do these jobs. In the absence of these students, Tim’s and McDonalds wound have to pay a decent wage to compete in the labor market or shutter stores. Given that they are for the most part franchises, no self respecting franchisee is going to piss away their million-dollar license because of a labor issue.

So the conservative counter to restricting student visas is that this will lead to inflation (labor costs etc), but that would be more than offset by the available rental stock that would open up by their absence in the rental market, and with rent being the single largest item in the budget of any renter it would be a welcome relief.

I’m not an economist, and this is all deductive reasoning, so I stand to be corrected. Canada’s birth rate is well below replacement population so there is the argument that we are grooming enough new Canadians to sustain our economy, but I think that Canada is attractive enough that we can attract enough immigration without the added inflationary pressure from thousands of students who don’t pay taxes and don’t provide any tangible economic benefit to Canada except propping up a corrupt private college system.

I went to uni in the 70s. It was a novelty to meet foreign students. I still clearly remember meeting a Russian for the first time.
I did upgrading in the 2000s and native Canadians were a minority in several classes.
University I was going to openly said they were dependent on foreign dollars. Im fine with them benefiting but they are now tailoring their programmes to attract foreign investment instead of serving the Canadian community.

A massive influx of foreign workers is definitely affecting the workforce. Almost all the fast food franchises in Winnipeg have been bought up by immigrants who employ relatives and friends from their community.

This is also a big factor in the homebuilding sector. There are many workers arriving with zero credentials working on houses. I have seen houses less than a year old with kitchen cabinets falling off the wall, improperly installed windows and doors and leaking plumbing. Unscrupulous contractors hiring people from back home who don’t know what they are doing but will work 16 hours a day.
Obviously these fake tradesmen are stealing jobs from real tradesmen who worked really fucking hard to get their red seal certificate.

Trucking has also been taken over by immigrants. We see truckers who can barely read or speak English, they drive semis through no truck streets, and are a menace on the road. Some drop off orders of building materials at the wrong location altogether.

There's a minimum so it doesn't drive wages any further down. I think there's lots of young Canadians that want those jobs, actually they're taking up jobs that a lot of high school students and local university students are trying to get.

inter provincial trade, which no federal gov't, who has the power to force it on the provinces will implement it

Most if not 100% of Asian SP's came here using a tourist visa or as a tourist from visa exempted countries, not student! Once they passed customs and exit YVR, they are nowhere to be seen by the tour company! When their visa's are up, they will go to those crooked immigration lawyers applying for extension or better yet, got cozy up with some of us single pooners and got married! That is a fatal mistake if that's what happens because they will marry you and then they will have 2-3 boyfriends/clients who they fuck semi-free on the side. In the meantime, tjhe poor husband thought he just won the lotto and got a nice asian wife! LOL

They are renting apartments, leading to a shortage of rentals . Renters now make up over half the population of Vancouver . If you also take away rentals there is no where for them to live . A lot of those renters work in jobs that are necessary to keep a city running .
