Interesting article in the Globe today,

" TRSS’s findings – which were shared exclusively with The Globe and will be provided to law enforcement agencies across Canada this week
– were based in part on an in-depth assessment of data scraped from online review boards used by men to find Canadian businesses that provide “happy ending” sexual services. "

“There’s so much money that’s being made in the informal or shadow economy that we are just barely scratching the surface,”
said Heather Fischer, senior adviser for human rights crimes at TRSS, who previously served as the White House special adviser for human trafficking.
It is estimated that illicit massage businesses in Canada and the United States together generate proceeds of roughly US$2.5-billion a year.

There are bad actors in every industry, even the anti-trafficking non-profit organizations, it's big business, ever wondered why?
We should all be fighting for decriminalization, you don't have to look far (ie down south) to see what happens if things go the other way.

Big nets catch good fish too, this is why it's important to have community, and why it's important that we as a community police our own,
as consumers we shop ethically, and why we need to support each other and work together to normalize standards and protect people.

Articles like this do more harm than good, and the fear we all live in of stigmatization makes it hard to want to talk openly about these topics.

What are your takes on this article?

Yes, I've copied and I'm going to add a repost of it (not behind a paywall) on https://PROS.news later tonight.
It's absolute fear-mongering, it is the same thing we saw with the legalization of marijuana though.
They told us about the billions of untaxed revenue, provided legalization, taxed the FUCK out of it -
and went after all the compassion clubs providing services to those dying of cancer at free / discounted rates.

My friend Ted Smith is a warrior, fought the law, and won, only to get fucked HARD ... without the lube.
He's continuing the good fight - and a constant inspiration to me.
We have been talking about it for years, get ready to see our community go through the exact same thing.

And what about money-laundering that drives property prices and rent to sky high? Nothing effective is ever done, and great excuse to keep increasing property tax
What do you think cash business ( say Massage places) who earn plenty of cash do with those funds? Perhaps the owners buy properties to "rent out" and receive cash which they can deposit in the banks to clean it. Watch Animal Kingdom to see how they do it.
I am sure this practice doesn't help our housing prices.
They follow the money, and pick the low hanging fruit to chase.

Funny how they turn a blind eye on casinos and other shell companies. "Sex trafficking" is just a convenient excuse to target MPs.

Thomson Reuters 'found' 87 illegal massage parlours in the lower mainland including - gasp! - one in Chilliwack. So you can be naughty in Chilliwack too if you want. Who knew? The article starts off on human trafficking but then quickly moves on to money laundering and most of it is devoted to that. A decent bit of editing might have suggested that you have two separate articles there, sport. The ladies I have met - sadly, not a lot - have all been intelligent, educated, independent and interesting to talk to. In no way are they victims or associated with money laundering. The article just assumes that all women have to be forced into it, they can't just choose to be in the business because they want to be. So, Thomson Reuters - if you are listening - let's deal in facts.

So the overpriced housing market is because massage parlour owners are buying up houses?

I wonder if anyone looks at the other side of the story - the positive side. I have had an eye on SVIP for quite a few years. I find it interesting the number of their ladies who have moved on to become high profile independents. Is someone who is being trafficked likely to move on to be an independent? I consider this to be a form of proof that there are many women in the lifestyle as a matter of choice.

I have no doubt that there are trafficked women in the industry, but I suspect that Thomson Reuters is painting the situation with too broad a brush, much to the delight of certain of our (explitative deleted) citizens.

Money laundering via rental properties is just one factor.
Doesn't have to be solely from MP's, but since they are largely cash business, they are grouped in with others in cash based businesses.

Just following up on SolidSnake's comment about money laundering pushing the prices up.
Non-existent tenants is one such factor, regardless of who the landlord is. If one needs to find a place to run the cash through, an empty house is a good place to start. So they pay over asking for those lower placed homes, which then pushes everything up.
