The interest rate went up 1% today.

Do you think this was too little, too late?

What do you think the rate will be by year end? By this time next year?

I wish that they had raised it 5% a year ago, and another 5% today.

This sellers bubble is going to burst, its just a matter of when, and how drastically.

Those deep in debt, are they soon going to panic?

10 days later, and nobody has an opinion on rising interest rates.

My opinion has little value but I would expect another 1 to 1.5 percent added by end of year. Seems as if the US may only add .75 at next meeting instead of a full point. This will hopefully weigh on the decisions of Bank of Can moving forward. Inflation has too many problem areas right now. This is essentially the most effective way to fight it.

I am saver and it is nice to see my investments receiving a higher rate of return. I would enjoy seeing rates go up another 5%. Savers have been steamrolled by central bankers holding interest rates so low for all these years.

Amen.

I have no debt, and do have savings.

For me sky rocketing interest rates would be great.

LOL i only found this thread now haha...

but i believe they want to keep the neutral rate to about 4% and let inflation calm itself down... However, I wish they had raised rates long ago as well.....

Interest rates won't dramatically lower inflation. It will screw up the economy.

It would be more prudent to raise the rates .25% quarterly and see the effects.

There are too many outside influences causing inflation for interest rates to have a major effect on inflation.

Some green shoots are appearing: fill-up ⛽ on Thursday $80.00; last fill-up, prior to Thursday, $100.00.

I've been in energy since December 2020 and it's faired me very well. Still holding energy in fact. Have quite a few energy shares too. Pembina has a monthly dividend of 5.5% and focused in the Natural gas dept. Great company, solid growth. I still see plenty more upside in energy imho. Energy companies are generating massive amounts of FCF. Enough to sustain or even raise dividends even more.Amongst other things too.

Now, I'm beginning to slowly nibble at certain financials shares. Balance sheets are strong.
For the record...I'm not a trader. Very long term holder. I've got a nice portfolio built up.

Check out Great-West Lifeco stock. +/- 6.42% dividend yield tax free 🌟

My only energy stock is Suncor.
Have plenty of other stocks, but not in energy.

Very nice. The potential spin-off looks interesting 🧐 too…
I've had my Suncor stock many many years, it is one of my long game stocks, along with some others I've had a lot of years. Bought some new stocks summer of 2020 when they crashed, some of those have done amazing. Haven't done anything the last year, neither bought nor sold a single share of anything. Just riding it out now, seeing how things go.

Sorry, it is not tax free for most people, but it is certainly at a reduced tax rate. Under some circumstances, for some people, it may be tax free.
I think 🤔 you have it backwards. For MOST persons living and paying income taxes in Canada 🇨🇦 receiving dividends from eligible Canadian Corporations is free of income taxes as a result of the Dividend Income Tax Credit. For those income taxable Canadian Residents that receive more than +/- $70,000.00 in Eligible Canadian Dividend Paying Corporations…

Ah, dividends and capital gains.
One of the last bastions of tax relieved earnings.
I am lucky enough to be paid a good part of my income in dividends by my company. And I say thank you to whomever way back put that into the system!!

LOL! Qualified and ordinary dividends are a US tax concept. Heck, the chart you posted is from an IRS document. Don't use Investopedia for your "tax knowledge" - alot of Investopedia cites US regs/laws. In Canada, the concept is ELIGIBLE and NON-ELIGIBLE dividends.🤦‍♂️

That pic you posted of "supposed" Canadian tax rates on divs is from https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/rp-21-45.pdf LOL!

Here's some friendly advice, if something says "jointly filed" - that's a dead give away that it is referring to IRS rules (and therefore US tax regs/laws). In Canada, there is technically no such thing as a "joint filing" for tax returns - again, that is a US concept.
