Any suggestions? Looking for something to play music off the phone, in the hotel so obviously doesn't need to be too loud. Any features/ things I should be aware?

My previous go to, touring speaker was the BOSE SoundLink mini II (until I lost it). I prefer smaller speakers that can not only have great sound, travel lightly, but now I also look for waterproof ones,
that I can also go kayaking and hiking with. My two current bluetooth speakers are the Google Home mini and whichever Sony (waterproof) speaker this is. (Purchased it at London Drugs on sale for $59+ taxes)

Headphones? No matter what I pretty much can say your music will be your neighbor's music with BT speakers in a hotel room. I have stayed in 4 star hotels and can hear next door's moans and conversations. Really suggest you don't go disco club loud please.

It's not the music that's going to be too loud.

I’ve been eying on a set of Kove Commuter 2 speakers, they are able to split and have a left/right speakers and it’s waterproof.

Look at Sound Matters. https://soundmatters.com/

Older speaker design but effective. The battery, a rectangle becomes the woofer. Company started by an ex NASA Rocket Scientist. Yes. A rocket scientist.

Models I have are versions of the FOXYL. I had no reason to buy their newer version the DASH. London Drugs used to sell them, the BT version was around $120 maybe more. Back 10 years ago when I was traveling a lot I always had my wired one with me then added the BT version around 2017 or so. The issue with any speaker in a hotel or a shared place is the bass. There are much much louder speakers out there and the FOXYL may not get to the volume you want but it is articulate sound. JBL, Sony, Braven, Ankor many others thump out the bass which will piss off your neighbours big time.

But, headphones ...

Sony SRS-XB12 or the newer SRS-XB13 that don't have the 3.5mm jack input for direct wired connection.
The battery life is good, 16hrs. It pairs two to make stereo, so you could have one speaker in a bathroom and another on a nightstand in a hotel room, or having great separation by having one on each nightstand by the bed.

The Beats one I have the Pill A1680 with 12hrs battery life, its just too heavy at 3 lbs. When it bit the dust I went with the little Sony's after hearing them in Best Buy and seeing how light they were. For $50 vs $200 they were good enough.

At home I use two Google Home tall ones, paired to make stereo. It also does bluetooth pairing, so I can connect my Amazon firestick to talk directly through bluetooth. They also do wifi broadcasting, so Spotify through the Google Home app, or a direct-connect from Spotify on my phone.

I believe that's the point, a little music to cover the other sounds coming from the room :)

I think Vanessa has it right. I'm just looking for something small to play some music in the background/ set the mood. Also looking for some small board games/ card games. We're putting together a "go bag" of essentials to have at the hotel.

I studied digital music production and I could talk about this for hours.

I 100% recommend the JBL charge. It has the most diverse range: whatever genre you want to listen to, it’ll do it justice. It’s also water resistant, and has outlets to charge your electronics. It can fill a room without being too loud, and honestly can also fill a room while being too loud lol. It’s a bit of an investment but it’s 100% worth it.

I have the charge 4. Here’s a link:

So how do you connect it up with music?

Ultimate Ears Mega Boom 3

trust me. This thing kicks and it’s imaging is unreal. It’s basically a cylinder and is great. If you are looking for something smaller the UA Wonder Boom is good too.

Once you get into Bluetooth compression you are likely dealing with two methods of compression and imaging is everything.

That being said go into a shop bring some music and play it on diff devices. What sounds good to one person may not to you.
