As to Bob's point, yes it is a different world in war but sadly it still gets down to killing.
The precursors to modern war also are pretty different. A US buddy of mine a Republican who is against most of the modern GOP, is a bit of an Eastern Europe political hack. He's usually right when he posts stuff. This just came up in his blog and I thought since it is current with a lot of topics going around I should share it.

Ukraine's elections in the 2004/05 time frame were wrought with corruption resulting in the "Orange Revolution", just read about it if you're interested but Putin's guy was sidelined at that time. Then in 2010 he got in but in 2014 Putin's puppet Victor Yanukovych was ousted. Paul Manafort was Yanukovych’s political manager, and he was paid $10M by one of Putin’s oligarchs. Shortly after the ousting, Yanukovych fled to Moscow, Putin took Crimea and occupied Eastern Ukraine in that so called separatist movement. Then Manafort offers to work as Trump’s campaign manager *for free*. Meanwhile Manafort gave secret internal polling info to the Oligarch who had given him the $10M. Meanwhile, Russian intel are doing a variety of things to aid in Trump’s election in 2016. Remember the two hulking Russian guys who were lost in the hoards of people investigated, arrested, etc under the reign of 45? Those were a couple of Manafort's buddies.
Manafort continued to advise Trump after he officially left the campaign and was eventually convicted in federal court. Of course he was pardoned by Trump. Since then has sung a fair bit to the FBI etc.
Three years later, Trump is pretty much caught red-handed, and impeached (was that the first or second time?) for, trying to blackmail Ukraine by withholding military weapons that they desperately needed to defend themselves against Russia. And what did he ask the Ukrainian President to do?
Two things: sabotage his political opponent (Biden) and just where did Hunter's laptop go anyway
And pin the electoral interference of 2016 on Ukraine, and away from Russia.
Through all this Trump sided with Putin taking his word over the US intel agencies.
Now, while almost the entire rest of the world is isolating and condemning Putin, Trump is calling Putin a genius for his approach to Ukraine.
All of this is a matter of public record and it is very hard to make this shit up.
