i've had a law firm recommended and so i've engaged with them for a minor endeavor... i really don't have that much experience with legal fees. i've been specific that each activity they proceed on they notify me and give me a heads up on an approximate cost. they seem to refuse to do so, just sending me a bill at the end of the month. they have asked me for a credit card for their accounts, i guess so that they can use it like an ATM. is this what all legal firms act like? any advice much appreciated.

What is the world coming to when you need a lawyer to sign a piece of paper?
When you need a lawyer, so that you don't get ripped off from house purchases/sales. Buying/selling cars. Divorce.
Sounds like a dog eat dog world, when you need lawyers to keep the sharks away....
If only man was honest....
So that is why you always need a lawyer.

What a place to ask this question lol
I'm puzzled by your remark Charlee. Do you think we Perbites are all such law abiding citizens that we would never need legal help? Or that there couldn't be any lawyers on this site to provide an answer to the question becasue lawyers are all such upstanding members of society they would never join Perb? Or ???

Personally, I can fortunately say that, other than for transactions requiring a lawyer's sign off, I have not required the services of lawyer for over 30 years and so am unable to provide any advice. It seems I fall into the first category I listed above lol.

HAHA. I mean, I KNOW, I understand that there's a possibility the OP can get real advice here, I just had a moment where I was amused by the fact that someone was asking for legal advice on an escort review board. Also, congratulations on your lawabidedness (yes I made up a word). <3

If they are not listening to your instructions, time to fire them and find a new lawyer.
Legal fees can be incredible, I sure had a nasty surprise.

Definitely look into replacing them but it may be hard if they are already in the middle of something.

Here in Manitoba the Bar Association can arrange free consults with three different lawyers and you can choose between them.

This is very inapproprite behaviour and it makes wonder how good their representation will really be.
Sounds to me like they ae more interested in your money than your case/situation.
Would you go to a dentist or hire a contractor who refused to give you a solid estimate and insisted just told you to turn over your credit card to them?
Or perhaps more appropriate for this board, would you go see an SP who refused to tell you her fee and simply asked for your credit card so she could charge you whatever she wanted later on?
A good, reputable law firm will be more than happy to give you an estimate and certainly be open to discussions when fees may exceed your budget.
Cheers

your lawyer should (must) give you an Engagement Letter, which outlines their fees for service as well as the services to be provided. If you don't like what is on that letter, then don't sign it. If you have not signed it, then you have not formally engaged them to perform any services and can ask for any fees paid back. Call the Law Society Of BC if you need assistance.

In the engagement letter, you can have them include Maximum fees to be charged as well.

I would need to know more about what you have signed in order to give a better answer.
You can also try BC Legal Aid for assistance in you billing/service issues and they should be able to provide some guidance.
