Wait.. you mean you haven't had this in Vancouver? I'm from the Seattle area and my roommate drove for Uber for a few months. I've never used any ride sharing service and hope I never will.

Are you aware of any restriction placed on the service?

Sigh. Uber and Lyft are NOT ride sharing services !!! They are ride HAILING services! Vancouver, and the rest of Canada, does have a true ride sharing service:

But as with all true ride sharing services, the amount I'm paid is not enough to justify the cost of the trip UNLESS I WAS GOING TO MAKE THE TRIP ANYWAYS. And btw, I do not need to report "income" to Revenue Canada (the CRA) because again, it is ride sharing, not ride hailing. The Uber and Lyft drivers will need to report their income.

This is a technicality IMO. Having Lyft and Uber finally in Vancouver is a good thing and should not make a case to complain about the term used to describe them.

The government is still doing this half assed i.e. pretending to fulfill what they promised during the election but putting way too many obstacles for these services to be really beneficial to the common people.

Nomenclature aside, I think this will be a substantial net positive for the lower mainland. Travellers, commuters, tourists, SPs, club and pub goers and pooners to name a few, all need to get around and this is the marketplace’s answer to the inadequate/outdated/overpriced taxi former-monopolies. Some will lose or lessen their livelihoods as a result but this is a price of progress, and were lagging way behind on this one.

Technically ride hailing and sharing if you count in Uber pool.
First day today and a ride from a pickup place to across the street (read: 0 minute, 0 km ride), costs $7+ and 19 minutes to arrive. Thank you Taxi mafia.

A guy from work went to yvr from waterfront for $27, without making a phone call. Ten minute wait, inside of course.

That's still an $8 savings plus not having to deal with unreliable cabs. I think Uber won't be the best for short rides in Vancouver, due to the $3+ minimum ride fee imposed, but still great for longer rides and reliability. If I could review cab rides, 5 out of 10 of them would get 1 out 5 stars from me.

I fly often. Taxi to YVR from downtown, on meter....they try and catch every red light....never take the fast outside lane....traffic is backed up, they’re in no hurry to get out of the jam. Rarely below $35.

YVR to downtown, flat rate, they drive like maniacs, often recklessly, trying to get to the destination as fast as possible.

I hope the value of their licence gets cut in half. They’ve had a monopoly all these years and took advantage of it. Karma is a bitch!!!

Cabbies are one thing, but have you ever tried that service with the town cars (and limos) that are always outside the YVR building? I forget the name, but they are flat rate, and cost just a small amount more than the taxis typical price. Nicer ride inside.

I think you’re referring to Aerocar. Yes have taken it on occasion, if they have a town car. If they only have a big ass limo I pass, not my style.

Amen, taxis are a bloody rip off here, $80 + or- to go to the airport from the tri cities is a bloody joke..

Surrey though is protecting Cabbies by saying Ride Hailing drivers can be ticketed with a $500 infraction.

Lots of (or heavy) baggage. That's the major reason.

The minor one is just disliking being among tightly-packed crowds of people, which if you just got off a plane after a long flight, is understandable.

Canada Line from the airport, one zone is $15 x 2 - $30. Cheaper and more convenient to take Uber, even if there’s a short wait. Also, depending on the time of day, that Canada Line can be like a bad neighbourhood on rail!!

Number of times someone near me has been harassed by (insert description - drunks, druggies, perverts, and flat out a**holes). And this has been around the dinner hour. I’d hate to be aboard during the late night hours.
