I am a city worker and the city has just declared a climate emergency. All the developed countries in the world recognize climate change, which is why the Paris Climate accord exists. 97% of scientists agree that climate change is occurring, it is human caused and we are near the tipping point.

We don’t call it global warming anymore because people who cannot do math do not understand it, so we call it climate change. Whatever name you call it, it means that B.C. will experience more extreme forest fires, drought in the rain forest (we do have/had a rainforest), and cold snaps.

Insurance premiums have gone up around the Gulf of the USA because of increase in extreme weather. Insurance has also risen in B.C., but you would probably blame that on the NDP.
So we agree . Actuaries are about facts not politics ....I believe you have to read once more what I said . I never blamed the NDP or a politic party for insurance increases in flood or fire coverage (my point)

I said that no matter what we call it things are warming fast especially in the last 15 years when I look at the glaciers and snow coverage around BC.

Insurance companies are such shining beacons of integrity. They are beholden to their shareholders and will use any flimsy excuse to raise premiums.

I believe the premise is that the global temperature is increasing due to human activity which basically is global warming, call it what you will climate change whatever. I expect I can do math as well or better than most people so what it’s called makes no difference. No one has been able to explain why my local has been having record cold, nor are they likely to because it doesn’t fit what people claim is happening.

If you really want to know, all you have to do is Google, read, and TTT. Here is an article written in layman's term.

There really isn't much point in arguing, let alone trying to have a learned conversation with folks like masterblaster or overdone; for they are zealots of the "good times" forever group of neo-conservatives who scream full speed ahead - damn the evidence of anything to the contrary of our own narrow world view.

These folks like to engage in a practice known as "whataboutism", in which ever question answered or piece of evidence given will be met with counteraccusations or raising unrelated issues. It's a losing battle trying to convert these people, because they'll never admit that they've been wrong - unless they end up in a situation in which they are forced to change their views by events occurring around them.

lol, you should try and read what I wrote

pollution, yeah, it's bad, I agree

the problem is the hypocrites are just mouthing off

they aren't actually doing anything

if they were, it would be making a difference, it's not

a enviro prof at McGill was on the news, he's quitting his job cause his Uni won't stop investing in oil and gas

see, now when he stops using a furnace, a car, ever taking a plane again, grows his food in his backyard, only eats bark and grass, then he'll be walking the walk

BC/QUE, their politicians argument, like most posers on here

is do as I say, not as I do

both of their gov'ts, present and past, have stated

we have enough of your oil/gas, not a drop more, unless of course we need it, lol

but you can't sell it to anyone else

just look at Horgan, mouthing off about the Coastal line being completely lawfully and righteous, cause he want's it, because it's money will go to BC

but, trans mountain, isn't cause the money is going to AB

same with Que, they don't get anything from the Energy East, so they don't want it

but they are happy to have lines crossing the border with the US

when you stop using NG to heat your home, gas/diesel to drive, fly, have cruise ships dock in Van, stop the ships from China, quit letting US coal thru your port to China
ect........

then you will have an counter argument

until then, you're posers who are nothing more

than

I have mine, fuck the rest of you!!

you want a level playing field, fine

stop importing oil/gas from the US, Mideast, Africa

quit taking AB's too

shut down the car industry in Ont/Que

stop importing 500,000 from the 3rd world every year for slave labour to keep wages down

along with the delusion that we should keep the most useless generation alive for their last few years, the boomers

those two things alone will decrease our emissions

less people=less demand=less emissions

but that won't happen will it, cause no one wants to talk about diminishing returns when it comes to population

it's not about the good times

it's about reality

reality is, all the enviro's want someone else to do the heavy lifting

while still reaping all the benefits

if you really cared

you wouldn't be using the internet, your phone, ect.....

cause there are no emission using electronics right? lol

all those servers, cables, wiring, towers, satellites, no mining, plastic, electricity by carbon involved there, lol

just unicorn farts, good feelings

so if you want a level playing field fine

STOP IMPORTING OIL/GAS, STOP USING WHAT YOU'RE USING NOW

BAN TANKERS ON ALL COASTS

SHUT DOWN ALL PIPELINES EVERYWHERE

THE GOOD OLD TIMES

THEY'RE STILL HERE SHORTBUS

THEY WILL BE FOR A LONG TIME

WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS SHIT FOR 40+ years

or don't you remember Kyoto, which was built on the UN's 1992 declaration, lol

so bring on the good new days

and if you want proof, 2 of the biggest emitters just signed a deal to increase emissions

the US and China, both of which spew more than Canada in spades

which we have no control over

emissions aren't local

so keep being a poser

soon we'll be poor 3rd world posers

cause that's what taxes do, make you poorer

and that's the only thing that's being proposed a tax, which won't change behaviour

if it was going to BC's would have worked after 10yrs

it hasn't and the little gas line and LNG plant will make sure it doesn't

the good old days, eh!!! lol

do as I say, not as I do!!

just like Greta/Gore/Trudeau/DiCaprio

you're all talk

posers

I assume you won't be on here anymore, doing your part and all :suspicious:

I understand your sentiment, but, believe it or not, they probably think the same of you. The real problem is that it's a very complicated issue, and BOTH of you have solid, valid points.

The simple fact is that climate change appears to be a very real problem, but the reality of trying to fix it is very difficult and nuanced. Yes, we are doing damage, but it's not easy to stop.

In the western world, we should almost certainly be trying to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. However, who are we to tell the developing world "no, you can't have what we have because of climate change". If my family is starving in front of my eyes, I likely won't care much about the fires in Australia.

Sadly we cannot sustain the current population of the world with renewable energy, let alone increase the standard of living of such a large percentage of people who want/need it. Obviously that's not a reason to give up or not to try, but we have to understand that the simplistic approach of either extreme won't solve the problem. Greta and Trump may represent the extremes (to the point they turn into the caricatures of their respective positions), but as is usually the case, the truth lies between the two extremes and requires compromise by both.

Just my 2¢ - take it for what it's worth.

(Still) Happy!

overdone I think you make a LOT of good points (see my other post). However, I think your points would be much better received if they were made with less vitriol (oh, and maybe the odd capitalization and punctuation ;)).

Again, just my 2¢, and worth even less. :D

P.S. On an unrelated note, I think PERB's emojis SUCK!

I saw that explanation before, not satisfactory in my opinion. Guess it works for some people who don’t actually question what they see.
Seeing this came from someone that determines there is no global warming because of what they see in their neighbourhood, it is pretty ironic and very funny.

Reminds me of the fable about the frog in the bottom of the well.

What percentage of population do you think are environmentalists? 1%, 5%, 10%? Let's just say all environmentalists just stop everything and kill themselves, do you think the climate crisis is going fix itself? It won't make enough of a dent. What we need are systematic changes, and that will only happen if we get enough people, governments, organizations, working on solving this problem together.

Supposedly the Arctic is warming up, that doesn’t explain where the current cold weather we are having is coming from. Don’t see that anyone that has an explanation either, just spout the usual flavour of the moment platitudes.

The city has declared a climate emergency? Give me a break. In what way are some do nothing elected officials or mindless bureaucrats qualified to declare a climate emergency? Because they saw it on the internet? What that is called is grandstanding. Gives the dull witted electorate the impression that the folks at city hall are actually doing something worthwhile.

If you want to go on that route, the same can be said about anything the government has power to do. I mean, what qualifications do they have to control nuclear weapons (for those that have them) for example. Are you suggesting a different form of governance?

Since you seem to know that the Arctic is warming, I want to mention what I recollect from a Scientific American magazine article about the "jet stream" that I read a few years ago. The strength of jet stream is driven to a large extent by the temperature difference (as well as the earth's rotation) between the high and low latitudes. Jet streams meander in any case but will make deeper Rossby waves as the temperature difference decreases between high and low latitudes. In North America, (there's another jet stream in the southern hemisphere) as a portion of the meander goes south, frigid air is brought down from the north. As the portion of the meander goes north, warm air is brought up from the south. You might recall in the news several years ago that Toronto played golf between Christmas and New Years one winter.

I know all about the jet stream explanation. Doesn’t answer my question but that’s ok. Have come to the conclusion that nobody really understands the issue, just parrot whatever they happen to hear.

I’m saying whatever the city of Vancouver declares as far as a “climate emergency” doesn’t mean squat in the big scheme of things.

Kamloops B.C.
I've spent some time in the Yukon, and have made friends that were Inuit, that had moved from the Arctic.
They say the winds have changed their normal direction .....they say the glaciers are melting, and their entire environment is changing rapidly.
They also say their verbal history is one of the most ancient, which has been proven time and again.
They speak of Vikings arriving, and settling, they tell stories of great die outs of sustenance species, that led to a great starvation.
All their claims got laughed at....then later proven by science.
They also have a storyline of a great warming...they claim it's happened before.
