Today, while I was having lunch....

Her: Good Afternoon, Is this Mr. T.

Me: Yes, I am. How can I help you?

Her: Oh, I am fine thanks for asking. How is your day going?

Me: It was going good till you called!!!

I slam the phone down.

Have you ever been rude to Shaw, Telus, Revenue Canada, Microsoft, Windows, Credit Bureau, Credit Card company, CIBC, CCIB, CCBB, BCCIC, CiCCB, ABCD, FUMF................. ?

Nah. I just say "Not interested, thank you. Bye." No reason to make life even worse for the poor sods who have to make those calls in order to earn a living.

You are Sybian, aren't you? Sounds like him anyways.
Just because I have more than one IP address doesn't mean that I keep multiple handles. Really, I haven't had a phone since 2006. Before that I always had my phone unplugged.

I see it differently. We all have choices. Some more, some less. But we can choose how we make the money.
What irritates me during the phone call soliciting is that they don't take no for the answer. Then I either end the phone call or I say: "Give me a second I'll be right back with you" and leave the phone on the table. Doesn't take even half a minute for them to hang up. Who is rude then?

I guess living in Siberia has it's own disadvantages.

I never had a phone till I came to Canada. So finally I got a phone and decided to have phone sex ( it was very popular in the 80's and 90's) I swear, I'll tell ya, it isn't pleasant having firefighters trying to cut the phone using jaws of life to free your d**k.

First thing this morning it was .... Thankyou for being a frequent flyer on Air Canada... Yesterday... it was This is Joseph (With a very thick east Indian Accent) calling from Visa. I have called to inform you there were two charges to your Visa card... $443 to Ebay and $754 to the Plaza Hotel in New York. I replied with... "Thats nice, I am currently overdrawn on my Visa so I think these charges would be declined" All I got for a reply was ... "Whatever....." and click..

We are on the Canada Do not call list... yet this happens Regularly. Usually with Spoofed numbers on the call display.

I have never been rude to Revenue Canada! I have found that being extra nice to them pays very big dividends! They can make life very miserable for you if you treat them rudely but can really help you out if your nice. And of course, I'm talking about real CRA agents, not those mother fuckers in India trying to rip off gullible Canadians - those I just hang up on.

Funny that you mentioned it. A few months ago, this charity called my office asking for donations and being a nice and very civil person that I am, I told them that at that juncture, we were unable to help this charity.

Guess what. His response was, "Oh that's fine would you like to donate something personally?"

I hope he knows what "Fuck you" means.

A friend got a call from the Conservatives last week. Her mother used to work in an MP's constituency office so I guess that's how they had her number.

There was a brief chat about issues. My friend explained that she is a single mom and has her own mom living with her. Her mom is not well, very old and takes a lot of work to look after. Caller goes oh yeah the Cons will take care of you blah blah...

Then she asked for a donation " it can be as small as A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS ". My friend says WTF didn't you hear me say I am a single mom looking after my kids and my mother? The caller said it didn't have to be all at once, she could just give a hundred dollars a month. Obviously just reading from a script and doesn't give a fuck about anyone.

Now I never talk politics with this friend but she was very upset and called me to talk about it. What bothers me is these callers, political, religious, credit card, they know how to push people's buttons and can really upset vulnerable people. I never buy anything from telephone solicitors. When I tell a caller that they try to make me feel guilty for insulting them. I say they are in my house uninvited and have no expectation of courtesy.

"Just trying to make a living" is not an excuse for being an asshole.

My printer has a fax option. Not a lot of call for faxes these days but you can make it answer at a push of a button. Which I do. Cuts down on the spam calls. You get marked as a fax machine and they don't call back.

Oh sure buddy.....give the Mods another reason to review my account.....
If I had another account I'd come up with something less obvious....like Sybian2....or Sygetsbannedalot.

But thanks for remembering I don't, nor can have a phone.

My first job was as a telemarketer. I was 14 and heading downtown in winter after swim class and reading the scripts, "can we count on you for your support with BC Deaf Kids" or whatever.

Had a guy who thought that he would ask about me, where I'm calling from, "Oh, Vancouver? Do the mountains have snow? I bet there are lots of skiers and snowboarders." I knew he was trying to waste my time but, as someone who was just rereading the same script and going through the autocall system at 7pm on a Thursday night, I was fine with getting off topic for a minute and taking a microbreak.

I have immense respect for people who are just doing their jobs. I used to have that job. They're underpaid and overworked. They found a posting on CL and they're trying to make ends meet. And they might smell like chlorine.

Rinse repeat for fast food workers, line cooks, cab drivers, Home Depot greeters...

I can agree as long as they are not trying to defraud me. I get at least one, sometimes 2, calls a day from the "CRA" telling me this is my last chance to avoid being arrested and sent to jail. Those mother fuckers can go straight to hell as far as I am concerned.

I ask them for their name and personal cell phone number.
They usually ask me why.
I say well I'm busy right now but I will call you back at a time convenient for me, and we can talk then.
They will say something about how they don't want to do that.
So I ask them why not.
After all they called me when it was convenient for them, on my personal phone. So it should be fine to call them back at my convenience. It seems to get me removed from their call lists.

One of these things is not like the other. Of that list only telemarketers harass you and don't take no for an answer. I try to be polite and decline whatever random thing they're offering but their scripts are designed to trap polite people, so eventually the frustration has to come out. e.g. upon declining to switch to TELUS, "what don't you like to save money?" I'd answer "no" simply because I knew their script didn't have a response for that.

I know what you're saying about empathy for the worker, but there's a fine line here that doesn't exist with those other jobs you mention.

And I don't care how poor off the telemarketer is I absolutely cannot empathise with the ones who are perpetrating scams.
