I’ve lived in Vancouver for over a decade and come back almost every year. It’s got some major issues that are hard to ignore. Drug use, housing affordability issues, heavy traffic and generally high cost of living. All major cities have these issues but Vancouver puts it on another level. Years ago I could have bought a house here but chose not to for the above reasons. I’d rather live in a nicer 450k house then a 600k dump. I don’t care how nice the weather is or how much the house in question went up in value, I don’t have to ever worry about falling and getting hit with a syringe. My family that’s still in Vancouver face it every day and they live in the nicer areas of the city. Suddenly -30c winters seem worth it.

And I also hate the idea of ICBC, just had to add that��

I have lived in Vancouver approaching 30 years. The number of times I have seen a syringe anywhere? Once. In 30 years. I don't know where you live, but most of the city is not like you are trying to suggest.

Traffic is not particularly bad. If you live in the suburbs maybe you have issues crossing bridges in rush hour, but in that case you are not living in Vancouver, you are living in the suburbs.

Cost of living is no different from any other modern major city.

Housing is expensive, but that is mainly because so many people want to live in the city. Other cities may be cheaper, but the reason is precisely because people DON'T want to live there, lol.

I originally come from a city where bars on windows and razor wire along the fence is normal. Where you avoid going out after dark and no one parks their car on the street. Vancouver is a fucking paradise compared to that.

Even if you pay a little more in a big city for housing, other costs are lower. Small town like where I am, no public transportation and everything is spread out, so a car is mandatory, and a car capable of driving in deep snow on mountain roads. Food, clothing, and the likes all cost more. Yet we still don't really have what I would call cheap housing here, my place was $1,246,000. That will buy you a house in Vancouver as well. The nearest grocery store is 7 kms away, and a bicycle in winter is not practical. So complaining about Vancouver seems ridiculous at best. Everyone should pay fair market value for anything that they do, from buying/renting a place to live, to purchasing a car. Government aka our tax dollars shouldn't be subsidizing some people. If that is how its going to be, then how much should the government pay for us to poon?
Should the government cover $150/hour of that $250/hour the SP wants to charge us...Fair is fair correct?!

Neither, stating a fact.
People who complain about housing costs in Vancouver seen to think that they alone have high housing costs. Lots of places other than Vancouver are also very expensive to live in. But still some feel that only Vancouverites are burdened with heavy costs of living.

The price of real estate in Revelstoke is out of touch with reality.Unless you have a government job or are a professional such as a doctor/lawyer/dentist etc you are just scraping by.A friend of mine paid me a visit one weekend and did a shopping run at Costco on my membership.He spent $1500 and bought everything you can think of.He had 6 trays of striploins in his cart and I pointed out the whole striploins and the price difference.Out go the steaks and in go 2 whole striploins.The food lasted 4 people for 3 months and if he had bought the same stuff in Revelstoke it would have costed him $4500 for less quality items.The ski hill development was a seriously controlled backroom deal to the benefit of perhaps 20 people and a detriment to the rest of the populace.

But was your place fairly new when you bought it? And is it over 3000 square feet? For that price you can still buy a house in Vancouver but most likely a fixer upper and really old.
