Why is it OK to use Canadian values to approve of American values when they align with ours, but we criticize their values when it doesn't?

Stop using Canadian values to judge other people. We live in different societies with different parameters. What works here doesn't always work in the US.

I am not using Canadian values, I am using MY values! I just happen to be Canadian. But I was raised by European parents so I suspect my values are more European than Canadian.

Then you are even less qualified to say anything. You don't even have the same values of someone from the same continent.

We don't need need to give these values any other label, except for having humanity.

Some cultures commit infanticide, genital mutilation, honor killings.

Some cultures do not allow women to drive, have seats in government, or show skin.

Some cultures are matriarchal, with women allowed many husbands, and men not.

Humanity is NOT universal. Your perception of humane is not transcendant across all cultures and races. Stop being a white savior.

Just because other cultures have different values does not make them right, or that I have to agree with them.

I was having lunch at Whistler just after Trump was elected and was still in the state of mind that reasonablely minded Americans were appalled that Trump had won the election. There happened to be 3 Americans sitting near me and I made a joke at Trump's expense. To say the least, they did not find it funny. They then went on to say they were happy that Trump had been elected. They were especially happy that Trump would be getting rid of Obama Care (one of the many promises Trump was actually unable to fullfil). They went on about how human rights were limited to the air that we breathe and that everything else we needed to earn. They actually talked about how in the jumgle only the strong survive and that is the way it should be in the USA. Universal health care was for weak willed communist countries. I was amazed and dismayed. These guys were clearly very well healed (they were discussing the $100 steak they were going to have later that evening) but would not give a penny towards the welfare of their common man.

So yes, I am very aware that different cultures have different values. But does not mean I have to agree with them!

I wish heads of states, and other influential law makers would do more than just say that they don’t agree with DJT when he says and tweets hatred. I haven’t given up on Trudeau, but he could have used this as an opportunity to highlight that xenophobia and racism do in fact persist here in Canada, and that we need to work harder towards their eradication. And no offence to OP, don’t see this as a retort, but whenever I hear or read anything that touches the subject of national pride, this classic bit comes to mind. I love this country, but:

Carlin makes a good point. I especailly like the advice he gives in the following:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lncLOEqc9Rw

It would be very good advice here in Van where homelessness is cronic and we definitely have our share of golf courses for the use primarly by the idle rich.

In softness, strength.
We live in different societies with different parameters. What works here doesn't always work in the US.
And exactly the opposite is true also. Like racism which doesn't seem to be as openly blatant here
as it does in the United states of Nazi america. According to trump.

Remember these words:

1). First they came for the socialists and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist.

2). Then they came for the trade unionists but I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.

3). Then they came for the jews but again I did not speak out because I was not a jew.

4). Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.

What does seem much more relevant is our politicians/lawmakers/leaders, don't openly attack diversity here.
Thank god.

Xenophonbic - a dislike of people from other countries....

Although some people are using the word racist. I can see why, if you are from another country, and someone tells you to go back to that country, when you are an American Citizen; and not only that an elected official to the government of the US states... (dosen't matter which house, senate or congress). The real power of the American people is the power of the congress and senate. Not the president

His comments are out of line, his own party should reprimand him for using such words. Why? If the words are seen as racist, then the people that put Trump into office should be seen as racist. When people vote they vote for people that have same values/goals etc. So if Trump is coming off as a racist, then therefore the people who voted for him are racist.... its a two way street.

What is the word for "Fear of losing ones wealth to the masses"? In the US the masses are starting to awake, and the rich are scared to death... What country can the rich go to that dose not have masses of poor people ready to take the rich people's money away.... The rich and powerful always fear the revolution of the poor.... Well because there are more of them..... So they make rules and laws to suit their needs.....so that anarchy does not set in.....

Also in Whistler I don't think you find that many poor Americans visiting the area. If you are spending 100/steak you aren't poor.... You are probably a capitalist/business man. Most super rich people are rich because of monopolies controlled by them. Oh and they can afford lawyers to crush you if you infringe on their monopolies......

These people really didn't take well to the message their parents had for them when they were young; to share with other people...... You know what any good parent teaches their kids.....

Anyway lookup the "Dirty 30s"; people do alot of criminal things when they are starving....

The winners of WW1 spent alot of time and effort to make sure communism didn't take hold of their country like it did in Russia. After WW2 the Americans closed the door to the communist Russians and the cold war began... The last witch hunt in the states was that Senator McCarthy hearing on American Activities or some such thing.... So easy to tip the scale of history.....

It’s not rascist to call out the people who are getting paid to represent America but instead crap all over it.

There are blacks leaving the Democrat party in droves to join the Republican Party because they finally realized they have been lied to by the dems for years.

Canadian immigration policy is multi-culturalism.

American immigration policy is assimilation and cultural homogeneity.

Don't use Canadian values to judge Americans. What happens in their country is their business and their President.

The funny part about this is that none of you actually really care about racism. All you care about is trashing Trump because it's the fashionable thing to do.

The Uyghurs in China are being detained in concentration camps by the millions. The ISIL and Rebels in Syria are killing Alawites. Yet one president and his loose twitter comment gets the whole world going.

It is absolutely irresponsible to prize feel good, simplistic messages over complex history and to treat consumerist-consciousness raising as interchangeable with education.

Crack a book. Travel the world. And stop being glued to news and TV. If you care, do something about it by killing Trump. If you can't, make the world around you a better place by example. Failing that, shut up.
