Something else that I didn't mention: Trade treaties have secret tribunals, primarily so that corporations such as Kinder Morgan won't be seen collecting big compensation for delays by, for instance, environmental considerations. If Donald Trump tears up Nafta, Canada, I would expect be relieved of that secretive treaty and wouldn't be required to pay compensation to Kinder Morgan. Rather think that Justin Trudeau's bid to buy Kinder Morgan pipeline for $4.5 billion actually would be near the cost of compensation resulting for Appeals Court to render decision and the current delay that Trudeau and Kinder Morgan realized would happen when Trudeau made the bid months ago.The pipeline that was supposed to be built out east has already been refused by the province of Quebec, because they were not getting proper kickbacks for the pipeline to go through their province...
Dont know about kickbacks but Quebec fought the pipeline because the product of the Oilsands is "dirty oil".....funny enough that did not matter to the city of Montreal when they dumped 500 MILLION gallons of raw sewage into the St Lawrence seaway....oh the hypocracy indeed. The pipeline that was supposed to be built out east has already been refused by the province of Quebec, because they were not getting proper kickbacks for the pipeline to go through their province...
The Northern Gateway pipeline already lost its court case for not properly consulting First Nations - that is why the Trans Mountain decision wasn't such a surprise to people who had been paying attention.Kickbacks, I hesitated to use this word, but Quebec wanted money for the pipeline to go through it. Call it fees or whatever....
The new pipelines cant go east, south, so west it is....
That northern gas line through Prince Rupert looks good now..... or are we trying to save natural gas to heat homes in Ontario in the future....
All of my friends celebrated the court's decision! I also noticed a lot of First Nations, environmentalists and just plain British Columbians also celebrated!Would have replied sooner but I was banned because some thin skinned Socialist objects to the idea of free speech.
A "day for celebration".....celebration of what....Western Canadian Select oil being land locked to a single buyer?Yeah thats real smart. When it comes down to brass tacks the only First Nations protesting the expansion of an already existing pipeline are the ones who are NOT getting any MONEY.With regards to the impact on the BC coast there will be no impact as there have been no oil tanker collisions and if there were oil tankers are now mandated by International Maritime Law to be double hulled....so that agruement is even more of a joke. What about those precious Killer Whales....yeah well they are pretty smart and they know if they get hit by a ship they are DEAD....has that busy Port of Vancouver with ALL of the container ships that bring in goods and send them out on a 24 hour 7 day a week basis been mowing down the Killer Whale population....nope...has not happened.
All of these pipelines should have been proposed in 1997 when the price of oil started to heat up and Alberta started to get back on track after the long felt effects of the NEP.Back before US special interest groups like the Tides Foundation started to funnel money to Canadian special interest groups to fight against the development of the Oilsands as well as infrastucture to get them to market. Not to mention before the Oilsands were TARRED with the name of "dirty oil" by the enviro wack nuts. How nuts it is that Canada imports Unethical oil from Saudi Arabia which as a country has a dismal human rights record and yet our own citizens decry and protest the development of our own energy sources because they are deemed "dirty".....yet those same protesters would not have the balls to go to Saudi Arabia and protest because they would feel the heavy hand of justice delivered via a system run by a Royal family in a country that is a Dictatorship.
At the same time these enviro nut jobs are total hypocrites. They drive SUV's and consume products derived from petroleum....it is all OK though if you are against the development of the "dirty" Oilsands.
If this post gets me banned.....well I guess free speech on PERB is out of the fuckin window.

lol, the court ruling is a ruling on the Trudeau gov'tI think the points you raise illustrate the ignorant framing of the conflict over the pipeline expansion project that is common in Alberta. Blame everybody else - Notely, Trudeau, Horgan, First Nations and British Columbians - insult them and threaten punishment (hmmm...kind of reminds me of a certain President).
The court decision to squash the NEB's approval was completely due to a failed process and Alberta's 'surprised' reaction to the ruling demonstrates how out of touch they are with reality. Instead of expending energy insulting and threatening British Columbians maybe Albertans should be redirecting their energy into creating a more diversified and sustainable economy, even in the Emirates they are investigating life after oil.
And don't worry about British Columbians, we have already proven to be resourceful, progressive and innovative - and Alberta's threat of turning off the pipeline is empty. How else are y'all going to make your monthly payments on your trucks and quads?
where do you think the oil is already being processed? The tar sands oil is dirty by the way, that is why it fetches a lower price than sweet crude. Less of it can be refined into higher value products such as gasoline and diesel. The refinement process is expensive and dirty due to the excessive amount of sulphur. With changes coming in 2020 that will lower the allowable sulphur levels in bunker fuel, 20% of the tar sands will be made financially unviable.
The failure of the Trans Mountain expansion has nothing to do with importing oil from Saudi Arabia. It was seen as a viable way to export bitumen, not provide the domestic market with oil to refine.
dream onAlberta tar sand oil is dead whether they build a pipeline or not. Demand will drop globally in the next decade and dirty oil will be the first casualty.
The court's decision was against the NEB's approval of the pipeline expansion based on the two deficiencies I previously stated...I would love to see where Justin Trudeau's name is mentioned in the ruling...so you are just spouting more Albertan rhetoric.lol, the court ruling is a ruling on the Trudeau gov't
they had complete control over the pipeline, they approved it, had the power to direct the NEB
Trudeau own's this, will wear this, it's his
and your delusions of BC's ability to go without oil, oil products, is just that, delusional
the world is decades, many decades away from that
where do you think the oil is already being processed?
we have a new refinery here, producing low sulphur diesel
it's also, already being shipped to Texas and refined there
or haven't you heard of that Keystone line?
they aren't shutting down anytime soon, lol
dream on
the railways are just ramping up, there was a new deal just signed with CN
the plants already running won't be shutting anytime in your lifetime
and just for you truly delusional in BC
BITUMEN already runs thru the existing pipeline and has for a while
delusions, aren't they great
oil production in Alberta isn't going to stop
the railways are just going to pick up the slack

Just so you have the record straight, Kinder Morgan applied to the NEB on December 16, 2013 to expand the Trans Mountain pipeline and so the process actually got underway during the Harper led Conservative government. Justin's Liberal government were not sworn in until November 4, 2015, almost two years later, so the review process was already under way.
I never said BC doesn't need oil, we are just not dependant on Albertan oil. Remember all those previous threats by Alberta to cut us off and the analysis that followed. Oil is a global commodity if Alberta won't sell to BC someone else will. USA? Mexico?
Even removing all environmental concerns, the threat to the tar sands is the prohibitive cost of extraction and refinement while it fetches such a low price. If you boys are sittin' pretty with your current set up like you claim, stop bitching to the rest of us about needing a pipeline.
And I think everyone already knows that the Trans Mountain pipeline already operates, the whole discussion is around its expansion. Or maybe you are just realizing that?
