Seven people have been hanging beneath the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge above the Burrard Inlet since early Tuesday morning, forming what they're calling an "aerial blockade" to prevent oil tanker traffic from getting in or out of the terminus of the Trans Mountain pipeline in Burnaby, B.C.

The blockade, organized by Greenpeace Canada, is the latest in ongoing opposition efforts against the pipeline expansion project which is projected to lead to a seven-fold increase in oil tankers moving through the Burrard Inlet.

Among those dangling beneath the bridge is Will George from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. The nation has previously challenged the pipeline expansion through formal regulatory processes, the courts, and through public rallies.

"I'll do whatever it takes to let people know this pipeline won't be built," said George in a telephone interview.

George said he's used to dangling in the air after spending 18 years cleaning the exterior of highrise buildings in downtown Vancouver.

He said by being part of the aerial blockade, he is setting an example of leadership to his son and continuing his community's opposition to the pipeline expansion.

The twinning of the Trans Mountain pipeline will nearly triple its capacity, to an estimated 890,000 barrels a day, and increase tanker traffic off B.C.'s coast to 34 tankers a month from approximately five.

"I don't mind standing in the way and letting people know that tar sands bitumen will not be travelling through my body of water, especially over 400 tankers a year," said George.

The seven people hanging in the hammocks are being assisted by five people on the catwalk above. George said that as he heard the traffic moving on the bridge above him on Wednesday, he thought of all those people driving to work for the day.

"They choose to live here because they love it here. And that's why I'm here. I'm here to protect what they love."
Tanker waiting to leave

The blockade group said it has been successful in preventing one oil tanker from loading up and heading out to sea. Anchored in the Burrard Inlet not far from the bridge is an oil tanker named the Serene Sea. The blockade group said the tanker was scheduled to leave for China on Tuesday.

A spokesperson from Kinder Morgan said the tanker filled up with crude oil at the Westridge Marine Terminal and is "waiting for suitable conditions at its Port of Vancouver designated mooring location."

The spokesperson went on to write, in an emailed statement, that the company respects the rights of people to demonstrate peacefully.

" It is unfortunate that the actions of these individuals have caused disruptions to vessels and individuals that transit to and from the waters east of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge," read the statement.

The Port of Vancouver said it is monitoring the situation closely, and that it is not safe for deep sea vessels and others to pass under the bridge while the protesters are in place.

The eco terrorist hypocrites strike again.Kind of like when Greenpeace bought 25 plastic kayaks from Costco to "blockade" the oil terminal.....yeah plastic is made from OIL.....fuck why did these assholes do it yesterday instead of the Canada long weekend.....I drove down to Vancouver on Friday and spent Saturday doing stuff including visiting my sister inlaw/neice as well as my brother and I got a few things taken care of with regards to the recent death of my father.I would have fucking LOVED to hack through some ropes with my swiss army knife and send these douchebags for a swim.

The thing that pisses me off is the utter hypocracy of these nut jobs. They consume and consume everything derived from oil and then they say the use of fossil fuels destroys the "sacred mother earth" and at the same time they are paid by foreign money via the Tides Foundation that is USA based and channels money to Canadian special interest groups. At the same time they are undermining and working against the National Interest of their own country.

On a side note I would like to say that the new Port Mann bridge is pretty fucking impressive and fucking HUGE....went over it and my mantra was "look straight ahead and pay attention" as I am scared of heights.....wicked awesome bridge I will say.

right here and now
No different than entitled union scum blocking access to a legitimate jobsite.
True story:
Many years back there was a brief wildcat walkout at BCCWH because the environmental services contract was given to a non-union company.
Hospital staff that I had interacted with daily suddenly turned from respectful and decent citizens into the most foul and obnoxious chest thumpers you could imagine.
I drove up in the morning to find them blocking access to my jobsite. I spoke directly to the ringleader- a guy I had a very casual "hello" relationship with. He told me that he would physically restrain me from entering if necessary because people that crossed lines in effect stole food from his family's mouths.
Really? And what is he doing by getting in my face and stopping me from doing my job- contracted by Coastal Health and paid for with tax money collected from all segments of society? Preventing me from working is different how?
I told him that all the crews would respect the block and not enter, however I was going in to get the drawings, documentation etc. so I could work from home and coordinate the project to work around as necessary- if he chooses to get physical then so be it- it's on him. And I walked through. With no resistance.
Fuck union, lowest common denominator, entitled time wasting dirts.
And fuck those that stand in the way with their "peaceful" and passive aggressive BS like dangling in front of tankers that are using "my body of water". Ok buddy- no one else has any investment or ownership here......
They are a danger to themselves and at the very least an impediment to those honest folk around them. Thanks for tying up traffic and potentially stalling first responders from getting to a real issue.
So fuck you Will George as well.

Just curious
Does anyone know if when we block someone, we don't see threads they started as well.

I have considered blocking some other members in the past but even if it was rare, they would at least contribute something of value from time to time.

Greenpeace and most environmental NGO's are pathological liars. All they do is spin, distort and lie.

History has shown us time and time again the danger of zealots. It's the common root of all bad things that happened in the past century.

Greenpeace has killed more people on this planet than the Nazi's did. Google DDT and Greenpeace. This is what happens when zealots dictate government policy.

It's good to support the environment, but the ends never justify the means and please don't support these people. There are better things to do with your money.

I am an owner operator and self employed and I have encountered a few union strikes with picket lines....the last one was at the Calgary Herald years ago and I had a constant flow of picketers blocking me from entering the parking lot.I parked my truck and walked in and as I crossed the picket line some guy started to yap and I yelled "fuck you....I am a self employed courier and YOU people are interfering with me making a living.....get the fuck out of my way or you are going to have my fist for your lunch....strike all you want but you are not going to affect MY income"....the guy STFU real fast I will say.

I do support the people in general that are in PRIVATE sector unions but I will not lose out on making money to support them. With regards to PUBLIC sector unions I have no fucking sympathy at all. Those people in all fields of the PUBLIC sector with their year over year raises that are tied to inflation not to mention the disgusting DEFINED BENEFIT pensions that are also indexed to inflation is why Canada is one of the most over taxed countries in the world.

I really don't see a lot of difference between Greenpeace and kinder Morgan etc. They all have a stake and use various underhanded methods to reach their end. Judging by the reactions around here there are just as many people who have dug in on their position as well.

Personally I am against the pipeline but not strictly on the basis of the environmental factors. Let's be clear here however. This is tar sand bitumen we are talking about. It's the dirtiest crap on the planet and it is 100 percent non recoverable in when it eventually spills. That's not the biggest problem I have though. The problem I see is where the industry is going. If the media portrayed this accurately they would mention the fact that all the major us players have pulled out of the Alberta oil patch and left trillions of barrels of oil in the ground that they own. They have lost trillions of dollars on these projects. Why? Because they know Alberta oil can no longer be profitable and there is no market for it in China because the high cost of refining and their commitment to renewables by 2030. But you will never hear this on the main stream media even though it is 100 percent fact. The US is a net exporter of oil for the first time in its history because of shale oil. It is cheap clean and it ships in tankers that carry four times the capacity of any tanker that can fit through the burrard inlet. And that is exactly why kinder Morgan put an ultimatum to the liberal govt. This is their ticket out and the liberals are lapping it up because they want votes in Alberta.

Google Louisiana off shore oil port in your spare time. Alberta oil is dead.

I'd like to see the backup for the "trillions" lost on the oil sands projects you speak of. And because some US players pulled out that is evidence it can no longer be profitable? Guess our players are just country bumpkins. And if you really believe China is committed to renewables and will reach it by 2030 I think you should take off your rose coloured environmental glasses and dangle yourself from the Second Narrows Bridge...

Btw, that "dirty oil" you speak of is a fraction of what China contributes to global warming.

But go ahead. Continue to whine about a lack of funding for education, healthcare and social programs and shut down resource development at the same time.

You want to talk money? Look sometime about which Province has paid the most in equalization payments over the last 50 years and then whine about dirty oil.
FUCK YEAH.....thank you for a good response to the post of someone who is not informed and who also has a slanted/negative view of the "oil sands".....the "oil sands" got labelled as "dirty" around 2006-2008 and they got labelled that way by environmental ZEALOTS......Saudi Arabia produces dark sour crude which is pretty much the same thing.

The crown jewel of the evil "dirty" oil sands is SYNCRUDE which is now 100% owned by Suncor and it produces 94,000 barrles of REFINED synthetic upgraded oil.

Alberta oil is not "dirty" at all and at the same time Alberta has the most stringent environmental laws on the books as well as the most ETHICAL practices.....Greenpeace eco terrorists do what they do In Canada because they can get away with it......you would never see a single one of them try and pull that shit in say Saudi Arabia/Bahrain/Jordan/Kuwait etc as the would have their fucking head smacked with truncheons and get frog marched off to a nasty prison cell.

As for the collective wealth that has been harvested from Alberta and then FED to Quebec that is another matter.....and it is a disgustingly disproportionate theft thanks to the pandering to Quebec mostly Lieberal but also Conservative governments.

If Quebec can have a VOTE to ask "can we leave Canada" and the result is "NO"......why the fuck cant the REST of Canada have a VOTE to say "We want to kick you OUT".....and then see the result....from ALL Provinces from the Maritimes stretching across the Prairies and then to the Left Coast......let the MAJORITY of Canada/Canadians VOTE if Quebec should get the largesse of tax money from other Provinces or that they get kicked the fuck out and have to fend for themselves.....whilst also taking their share of the National Debt and establishing their own currency that would be considered viable on the world stage.

Eco terrorists? Worse killers than Hitler? LOL. So sayeth the Wildrose Taliban. "Ethical oil", my ass. That wrote the playbook on spin, distortion, and outright lies; hundreds of millions of dollars spent each year to try and convince people that facts aren't facts.

What a solid retort

You wouldn't last long there either.
I would not be there in countries LIKE Saudi Arabia/Iraq/Yemen etc protesting against oil because I know if I did I would not get a cushy kid gloved sentence/judgement compared to Canada/USA.That is what gives the ECO Terrorists the licence to do what they do.....knowing it is a paltry fine that is paid for BY the subversive special interest group that employs them and PAYS them to protest.

I would of thought that the people hanging there would be good target practice for BB guns.... or airsoft paint guns.... -- neon yellow paintballs to make them easier for the tankers to see...

Most big ships bridge crews rarely look up.....
