Random Tequila Tips...

With Summmer almost here, I thought, I'd throw out one of my favorite Margarita recipes .
But, first We have to cover off the Heart, of a great Margarita ?
Which is Tequila !

I started collecting Tequila, about 15 Years ago, when I first starting going to Mexico regularily .
My Wife is a very finicky Drinker, and when You find a Bartender who makes a tasty Margarita, You watch what They're pouring .

Hornitos Reposado, or Horny Hornitos, as I referred to It after that . That was the trigger, for my wanting to learn more about Tequila . Hornitos by the way, is like cooking Wine to Mexicans, because it's one of the cheapest Tequilas .

A little KISS History on Tequila . The Mexican Government trademarked Tequila, and how it was produced in 1973 .
To be considered Tequila, it has to contain 51% Weber Blue Agave Juice, produced in the state of Jalisco .

Just a Sidebar, Mezcal is like Tequila .
But, it can be made from any variety of Agave, grown anywhere in Mexico .

Where most People are soured on Tequila for Life, is Jose Cuervo Gold . Jose Cuervo makes some excellent Tequilas .
But, the "Gold" isn't one of Them !

It meets the minimum requirements, to be classified as Tequila . It's 51% Blue Agave juice, and it's Colour which usually comes from being aged in Oak Barrels is actually from Caramel food colouring .

The starting point, for any decent Tequila, is it will say somewhere on the Bottle "100 % Agave" !

If You can't find that, as the Scotch would say, "It's Crap !" .

The Three basic Tequilas:

Blanco: Fermented, Distilled, and Bottled .

Reposado: Fermented, Distilled, Aged in Oak Barrels for at least 6 Months, Bottled .

Anejo: Fermented, Distilled, and Aged in Oak Barrels for at least 18 Months .

A couple newer developments in Tequila over the last 10 Years .

Extra Anejo: Just aged longer, but, very smooth !

Cristalino: Essentially Anejo, that has been Charcoal filtered, and stripped the Colour off . Very smooth Tequila too .

What to buy, in BC, to make a tasty Margarita cheaply ?

2nd Sidebar: The main reason Tequila got so expensive about 10 Years ago, besides it's increased demand due to popularity, is that it takes 8-12 Years to grow Agave to maturity . And there was some blight that decimated the Crops for a few Years . It's only over the last couple Years, that prices have started to drop slightly, as Crops have stabilized .

My suggestion for your cheap, tasty Margarita, would be "El Jimador Reposado" . About $28 a Bottle, which is just over a Buck a Shot . Not bad, depending on how Stiff, You like mix your Margaritas ! LOL

El Jimador Reposado http://www.bcliquorstores.com/product/460360

Where it gets it's Name, and where Tequila production begins .

Something else to be aware of, regarding Tequila .
Every Bottle, bottled in Mexico has a "NOM" Number on the Bottle .

The Norma Oficial Mexicana number, or NOM number denotes that the bottle is authentic tequila produced in Mexico.
It also tells you which tequila producer it comes from .

Why is this interesting ?

Herradura Tequila's NOM number is 1119 .
They make "El Jimador", along with a bunch of other good Tequilas, like this One .

It's about $95 a Bottle . Now that's over 3 Bucks a Shot...
They don't taste the same, but, You be the Judge ?
Both Reposados, from the same Distillery .
What are You putting, in your Margarita ? LOL

My personal recommendation for a reasonably priced, sipping Tequila, would be Cazadores Anejo .
I've got some pretty expensive bottles of Tequila, and everytime I play "Mystery Tequila" with the Wife, enjoying 3 Shots of different Tequila .
She always picks, the Cazadores Anejo !
It's about $46 a Bottle .

That's all the passion on Tequila, I have for One day ! LOL

Stay Tuned, for the secret Margarita recipe...

Cheers

P.S. This is what I'd imagine Raquel wearing, if We were having a Marg together ? LOL

And so much, for the KISS history of Tequila ? LMAO !

I started with The cheap stuff.....now it's Cazadores all the way. I was introduced to its superior taste by a friend who spends an awful lot of time down there, like yourself.
Although I drink it without the bother of mix.......which probably explains why my voice sounds like I've been eating gravel.
I also believe that when the Tequila enters your blood stream, and seeps out your pores, it makes an awesome mosquito repellent .....at least that's the theory I prefer to believe, when I want that 3rd shot.
