Before Celine Dion many many americans did not knew where Quebec was and that we primarily spoke french there. So not knowing driving with a canadian licence is perfectly legal does not surprise me much...

right here and now
We cross over into Washington at least a dozen times a year for numerous activities
State Troopers and Highway Patrol don't fuck around. Abide by the laws and definitely don't speed- no quarter is ever given, and a trip to the tank is not unheard of.
I've been ticketed- and make sure that I pay it the first chance I get. Getting pulled over with an outstanding traffic warrant will instantly put you in bracelets.
But having said that, this particular cop was either a complete idiot or had some other agenda.
I feel badly for Emily- she didn't deserve this treatment.

Having been educated in the US (and no, that’s not an oxymoron!) I can say the US educational system tends to teach nothing about Canada. The media is no better - I grew up knowing more about Ancient Cemtral/South American societies, Russia (USSR) and Middle East than anything about Canada. It’s sad and embarrassing. Up until a few years ago, I didn’t know how many provinces/territories there were, how it’s govt works, population, etc. No excuses, mind you.

With over 300m people (the majority of whom think the US is the end-all/be-all), you’re bound to get some uneducated folks in all walks of life. Again, no excuses and some huge apologies are owed to the woman!

This may be true for the average American citizen, but an officer of the law that gives out speeding tickets should know that a valid Canadian driver's license is allowed in all of the USA.

There is another link within the student's awful event.

It's quite relevant to anyone travelling by car thoughout the states. It's the extraordinary powers given to LEO to fight 'War on Terror'. Such bullshit, the cops are after your cash. You get pulled over for BS reason but most likely because you have Canadian plates on your car.

The Cop asks for permission to search your car and if you decline they will anyway because you have something to hide.

It's so corrupt now. I'm disgusted by how that country has turned into a Fascist State.

I grew up in North Dakota and it's very true that we really learn nothing about Canada. I mean, sure we hear about y'all when we learn about the WW's and French Americans sent down from here, but nobody learns anything about the history or law. It's sad stuff like this happens because the States don't seem to be interested in teaching their people about their neighboring countries. We really only learn about the countries we go to war with. When I was in the process of moving here I remember speaking to a couple of my mothers friends who were officers and they still thought Canada didn't require passports to enter the country and that all I'd need was a birth certificate. They really aren't taught anything at all about here.

I don't know if I can blame the officer for being uneducated. The superiors should teach them much better than that, as should their history and law classes. I'm glad the charges were dropped but I feel so bad that she was put through that. Hopefully it opens LE's eyes that they need to spend more time talking about their neighbors and the laws.

You'd think they'd take more time to teach about a country so close.

Being in Winnipeg it was fairly common that I would head down to the states at least 2-3 times a year whether it was just to North Dakota or down to Minneapolis. In the past two years I have only been down to North Dakota once and it really just has a much different feel than it used to, especially with North Dakota being such a solidly red state. Going down I just felt more on edge than I had in the past and while that may have just been my paranoia (trump had been sworn in about 2 weeks prior to that visit) it left with me very little desire to go back. I will fully admit that the dollar being as poor as it has been lately hasn't helped matters, but regardless I still find it disappointing that things continually seem to be changing for the worse in a place I used to really enjoy.

Yes I will not be going back until things change.
It has definitely become less friendly and more suspicious, to the point of being hostile.

Fascist state? Aren't we being a little d-d-dramatic?

The US is still the freest country in the world. I don't imagine Russia, or China, or India, or Nigeria, or Brazil, or South Africa has much of an immigration problem - still think we're the fascist ones?

If it's not a great country, why do so many people still want to come here?

I would bet thousands that if the US announced free US Green Cards for the first 1000 people who line up at the US Consultate in downtown Vancouver tomorrow, the line would stretch to Stanley Park. There would be a riot.

If they offered that at the Canadian Embassy in DC, the line wouldn't reach the Parking lot.

Sadly, few people down here are even aware of Canada. Of those that are, few care what you think.

Just the facts of life folks.

You all come back now, ya here !! LOL. :spy::closed_2::welcome::deadhorse::canada:

There's one right there at the White House; so what else can we expect?

Saw on twitter some apologists explaining the cop was right to arrest her because she was not carrying her passport when she was stopped for speeding 87 at 70 zone.

1) Passport is a travel document required to gain entry into a foreign country. Once entry is gained, there is no requirement for one to carry on the body 24/7.

2) Canadians are exempted from visa requirement to visit the U.S. and vice versa.

3) Drivers with valid driver licence from Canada has the privilege to drive in the U.S. and vice versa.

4) At the most, the cop could have written a speeding ticket. Handcuffing her and putting her in jail may be grounds for lawsuit.

Thank you,

Legalization of cannabis in Canada (actually it will most likely be later than Cannabis Day).
Oops, I meant Canada Day.
LOL.

As long as you enable your law enforcement to steal money and jail Canadians for no friken reason; you are from a Fascist State. Using the excuse "terror or drug related" if someone is going to a Mall to shop is pure thuggery.

It's people who have cash in hand that LEO target without any reason. What next, they gonna drive them to a bank machine to clear out their bank accounts?

Problem is you guys think you are the greatest nation but in reality you are not. So many problems there and your #45 is only making it worse. Much worse.

I used to work down there when it was a fun positive environment. Now I am glad it is in the past and I don't need to navigate your border personnel even though I had a work visa.

Your honour, I would like to enter the following into evidence:
Great clip, love Jim Jeffries! I thought of a different clip when I read that darn Yankee's post. If you've never seen this clip get ready for possibly the best 8 mins ever on TV:
